♟️ About Annex Chess Club
Annex Chess Club is an active community chess organization in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ted Winick founded the club in 2010 under the motto “Chess for Everyone!” Since then, the organization has welcomed adults, juniors, beginners, club players, and experienced competitors. Moreover, it provides both competitive and recreational chess within a friendly city-centre environment.
The club began its activities at 918 Bathurst Street in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. It moved briefly to another venue in 2018. However, Annex Chess Club returned to Bathurst Street in 2021 after the interruption to over-the-board chess. Today, the organization meets every Monday evening and offers tournaments, classes, casual games, and special events.
Salim Belcadi serves as President of Annex Chess Club. Meanwhile, Keith Denning works as Club Manager and directs many of its tournaments. Other board members support administration, safeguarding, events, and long-term club development. Consequently, the organization can manage weekly club nights alongside major provincial and national competitions.
🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity
Weekly tournaments form the core of the club’s competitive program. Annex Chess Club runs continuing five-round competitions, with one game played each Monday. Rounds normally begin at 7:30 p.m. In addition, players receive 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.
The weekly tournaments include Crown, U1800, and U1400 sections. Every section counts toward Chess Federation of Canada ratings. Moreover, the Crown section also counts toward FIDE ratings. After each game, players can analyse their positions in the club’s separate casual-play room.
Annex Chess Club also organizes several major Toronto competitions. These include the Toronto Open, Toronto Closed, Toronto Blitz Championship, Ontario Open, and Ontario Seniors Championship. Therefore, members and visiting players can enter both regular club events and larger weekend tournaments.
The organization has also delivered important national and international projects. In 2023, it co-hosted the Canadian Transnational with Maplewood Chess Club. Furthermore, it served as a local partner during the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Toronto. In 2025, the club hosted the Canadian Closed for the Chess Federation of Canada.

Annex Chess Club provides chess classes for children and adults. The lessons support beginners and intermediate players. The club also hosts the Toronto Women’s Chess Club once each month. Woman Grandmaster Anna Burtasova leads a lecture and guided game analysis. Afterward, participants can join casual or tournament play. As a result, women and girls receive a dedicated and welcoming space within the wider club community.
Members can also use the club’s extensive chess library. In addition, Annex Chess Club maintains close relationships with other Toronto chess organizations. These include the Chess Institute of Canada and National Chess Camp. Above all, the organization combines competition, education, inclusion, and community participation.
