Age categories use the player’s age at the beginning of 2026. For example, U12 means that the player was under 12 at the beginning of the year.

For section determination, the organizer states that it will consider the maximum available rating at the arbiter’s discretion.

📝 Registration

Players must hold the appropriate chess federation membership.

Quebec players need membership in the Fédération québécoise des échecs (FQE). Players from outside Quebec need membership in the Chess Federation of Canada (CFC/FCE).

New players and players with expired memberships can obtain federation membership. In addition, the organizer offers a single-tournament membership option costing approximately C$3–12, depending on the event, age, and province.

Classical Entry Fees

At the current reference exchange rate, these fees range from approximately $50 to $100.

GM/WGM, IM/WIM, and FM/WFM players receive free entry to the Classical Tournament.

The nearest major airport is Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW).

The airport’s O-Train Line 4 connects Airport Station with South Keys. From there, travelers can continue through the Ottawa transit network and then transfer toward Gatineau.

Taxi and rideshare services also operate directly from the airport.

Tour du Québec

The Open de Gatineau is the third event of the 2026–27 Tour du Québec schedule.

The Tour du Québec has its own separate season-end class prize fund. Consequently, those circuit awards should not be added to the Gatineau Open’s tournament prize fund.

EOCA Grand Prix

The Classical event also forms part of the Eastern Ontario Chess Association Grand Prix.

This gives players from both Quebec and Eastern Ontario another competitive reason to participate.

2025 Edition

The previous Gatineau Open took place in April 2025.

GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux and FM Vincent Latorre both finished on 4.5/5 at the top of the main event. The CFC rating report records Rodrigue-Lemieux first and Latorre second, both on the same score.

The organizer subsequently moved the next Gatineau Open from its traditional spring period to November 2026.

Échecs Outaouais describes the Open de Gatineau as the largest chess tournament in the Outaouais region.
