Wapichess 2026 takes place from October 24–31, 2026 at the Centre Éducatif Saint-Pierre in Leuze-en-Hainaut, Belgium. Échiquier Leuzois 541 organizes the third edition as a nine-round FIDE-rated classical open.

The tournament uses the Swiss system with 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. It also applies a Sofia-style draw restriction, requiring at least 20 moves and one hour of combined playing time before players can agree to a draw.

The prize pool consists of 100% of collected entry fees plus €1,500 added by the organizer. Because the final total depends on participation, the WordPress USD prize-fund field is intentionally left blank rather than presenting an artificial fixed amount.

ℹ️ Other Information

The tournament is open to players affiliated with a Belgian club or holding an active FIDE ID under the published regulations. Players should submit bye requests within the deadlines specified for each round.

Pairing Procedure

The organizer uses SWAR for pairings and bases the tournament on the FIDE classical rating list in force on October 1, 2026. Pairings are normally published no later than 30 minutes after the final game of the preceding round and are displayed in the playing hall, on the event website, and through the organizer’s social channels.

Once a pairing has been published, it is not changed except in a genuine force-majeure situation. For Round 1, paid players who have confirmed their presence are paired; a paid player who cannot attend the first round should warn the organizer in advance. Titled players follow the same presence requirements.

Half-Point Bye Deadlines

A player may request a maximum of two half-point byes before Round 7. The Round 1 request must be submitted before the Saturday check-in deadline. For Rounds 2–6, the request must reach the organizer before the final game of the preceding round has finished.

Tie-Breaks

Priority Tie-Break
1 Buchholz Cut 1
2 Number of wins
3 Sonneborn-Berger
4 Buchholz
5 Cumulative score

Scoresheets & Result Reporting

Players must keep notation throughout the game. After the result is agreed or decided, both players sign the scoresheets. The winner—or White in the case of a draw—is responsible for returning the white copy according to the organizer’s procedure. A result that is not correctly submitted can be recorded as 0–0, so players should verify that their result has been received before leaving.

Any correction to a published result should be made before the next round. The published default time is 60 minutes; a player who arrives after that limit loses by forfeit unless the arbiter has ruled otherwise.

Electronic Devices & Conduct

Mobile phones and smartwatches must be completely switched off and stored in accordance with the tournament rules. The regulations provide a 10-minute time penalty for a first phone infringement and loss of the game for a second infringement. Chess books, software, and other analysis material may not be used in the playing area unless deposited with the arbiter as required.

Eating at the board is not permitted. Silence is expected in the playing area, and post-game analysis must take place outside the active playing zone. After finishing a game, a player becomes a spectator and must respect the spectator restrictions.

Appeals

Marc Hannecart serves as arbiter. The event also provides an appeals committee of three persons. A written appeal must be lodged within 20 minutes after the relevant round; the arbiter’s original decision remains in force until the committee decides the appeal.

Prize Distribution

The tournament redistributes 100% of entry fees plus €1,500. The final prize table is therefore linked to actual participation and available support, after the event’s applicable organizational costs and trophy arrangements. The organizer plans to publish the distribution before Round 3. Prizes are non-cumulative.
