♟️ About Échiquier Leuzois 541

Échiquier Leuzois 541 is a chess club based in Leuze-en-Hainaut, in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The club affiliates with the Fédération Échiquéenne Francophone de Belgique (FEFB) and appears in the Royal Belgian Chess Federation system under club number 541. It provides competitive and recreational chess for children, teenagers, adults, and senior players. The club meets every Friday evening from 19:00 at the Centre Éducatif Saint-Pierre, also known as the CESP, in central Leuze-en-Hainaut. Its program combines FIDE-rated classical chess, rapid and blitz tournaments, internal championships, friendly games, and national interclub competition. Moreover, the club regularly welcomes players from outside Leuze for larger open events. Patrick Decellier currently serves as President of Échiquier Leuzois 541. Meanwhile, Ludovic Hias remains a principal public contact for the organization and has represented the club in local chess activities for many years. The City of Leuze-en-Hainaut currently identifies Hias as the responsible contact for the chess club.

🏆 WAPICHESS International Open

The club’s principal international competition is WAPICHESS, a FIDE-rated classical tournament launched in 2024. The Royal Belgian Chess Federation explicitly identified Échiquier Leuzois 541 as organizer of the inaugural edition. The tournament quickly became a recurring part of the club’s calendar. After editions in 2024 and 2025, the WAPICHESS 2026 reaches its third edition and runs from October 24–31, 2026. Players compete over nine Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the competition receives FIDE rating and accepts players with an active FIDE registration. The 2026 prize structure is particularly distinctive. The organizer adds €1,500 to the complete amount collected through entry fees, and the resulting total is redistributed as tournament prizes. Titled players also receive free entry. WAPICHESS takes place directly at the club’s regular playing venue in Leuze-en-Hainaut. Therefore, the event connects an international FIDE tournament with the everyday chess environment of Échiquier Leuzois.

♜ Club Tournaments and Competitive Chess

Échiquier Leuzois maintains an active internal tournament schedule throughout the season. Its recent calendar has included the Coupe Échiquier Leuzois, seasonal classical tournaments, presidential cups, rapid tournaments, and several blitz competitions. The Coupe Échiquier Leuzois 2026 ran from January through June and received FIDE rating. In addition, the club regularly organizes shorter Friday evening competitions, including rapid and blitz tournaments with different time controls. The club has also hosted competitions beyond its internal calendar. In 2019, Leuze organized both the Elite and Open sections of the French-speaking individual championships. Consequently, the club has experience with events involving the wider francophone Belgian chess community. Échiquier Leuzois also participates in Belgian National Interclubs. This gives members opportunities to represent the club against teams from other parts of Belgium while complementing the club’s individual tournament program.

🎓 Chess Training and Player Development

The club welcomes players with different levels of experience. Local community information describes its activities as suitable for children, teenagers, adults, and seniors, while earlier municipal programs specifically promoted both initiation and improvement. Friday evenings provide the main setting for this development. New players can learn the fundamentals, while established members can play training games, rated competitions, or prepare for interclub matches. Moreover, Échiquier Leuzois creates regular competitive opportunities at different time controls. Classical tournaments help players develop longer-game skills, while rapid and blitz events provide additional practical experience. The club’s schedule also includes friendly chess and seasonal activities. Therefore, membership does not require a player to focus exclusively on federation competition.

🤝 Chess in Leuze-en-Hainaut

Échiquier Leuzois forms part of the sporting and community network of Leuze-en-Hainaut. The municipality includes the club in its official sports directory and promotes it to residents of all age groups. The organization also works with local businesses and community partners. Current club sponsors include Brasserie Dupont, Mat et Mots, Boucherie Chez Dany, Drink des Primevères, L.H.T. Leuze Trophées, Menuiserie Vinckier, and local financial-services partners. Furthermore, the club maintains an active public presence through its website and Facebook page. Tournament announcements, photographs, results, and club news help connect regular members with the wider Belgian chess community. The development of WAPICHESS has expanded that reach further. What began as a local club tournament program now includes an annual week-long international open alongside the club’s established internal and national competition activities.
