The 5th Skyline Open takes place from October 9–12, 2026, at the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott in Dulles, Virginia, USA. Eastern Chess Association runs the four-section tournament over the Columbus Day weekend.

The main event features Open, U2000, U1600, and U1200 sections with three different schedule options. The Open and U2000 sections receive FIDE Standard and US Chess ratings, while the U1600 and U1200 sections count for US Chess ratings.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament offers four-day and three-day schedules for the Open, U2000, and U1600 sections. The U1200 section uses a separate two-day schedule.

The organizer uses the October US Chess rating supplement.

The Open, U2000, and U1600 sections play seven Swiss-system rounds.

Players receive 90 minutes for the entire game plus a 30-second increment from move one.

The Open and U2000 sections count for both FIDE Standard and US Chess ratings. However, the U1600 section receives US Chess rating only.

🎯 Three-Day Schedule

The three-day option also consists of seven rounds.

Players in the three-day schedule play two accelerated rounds on Saturday morning and afternoon. Afterwards, they merge with the four-day field for Round 3.

For Open and U2000 players, the first two G/50;d5 games do not count for FIDE rating. However, Rounds 3–7 use the FIDE-rated standard time control.

The U1200 section runs over two days and consists of six Swiss-system rounds.

➗ Half-Point Byes

Players may request up to two half-point byes.

They must request those byes before the start of Round 3.

⏰ Default Time

The default time is 30 minutes in every section.

Therefore, a player who arrives more than 30 minutes after the scheduled round time forfeits the game.

🔄 Re-Entry

A player who loses Round 1 may re-enter the tournament for an additional $50.

The returning player receives a half-point bye for Round 1. However, that player may not take any additional half-point byes.

🏆 Prize Fund

The tournament advertises a total prize fund of $10,000.

The Open section prizes are guaranteed. Prizes in the other sections are based on 150 paid entries, with 60% guaranteed.

The tournament has four rating sections. In addition, the Open, U2000, and U1600 sections offer both four-day and three-day schedules.

👑 Open

The Open section is both FIDE Standard rated and US Chess rated.

Players must have reached a peak US Chess or FIDE rating of at least 1800 since January 1, 2025 to qualify for the Open section.

Players currently rated 1600–1799 who otherwise meet the Open eligibility requirement pay an additional $100 to enter the Open.

Players currently rated below 1600 and unrated players are not eligible for the Open section.

🎯 U2000

The U2000 section offers both four-day and three-day schedules.

It counts for both FIDE Standard and US Chess ratings. Therefore, players entering this section must have a FIDE ID.

🧩 U1600

The U1600 section also offers four-day and three-day schedules.

This section is US Chess rated only.

🏅 U1200

The U1200 section uses a two-day, six-round schedule on Saturday and Sunday.

It is US Chess rated only.

The 5th Skyline Open Blitz takes place on Saturday, October 10, with play beginning at approximately 9:00 PM.

Players do not need to participate in the main Skyline Open to enter the blitz.

⭐ Titled Players

GM, IM, WGM, and WIM players receive free entry when they register by September 30.

For titled players registering after September 18, the organizer deducts the normal entry fee from any prize winnings. However, titled players who register by September 18 do not have the entry fee deducted from their prize winnings.

↩️ Refunds

The organizer does not issue refunds after the start of Round 1.

Before Round 1, refunds remain available minus non-refundable processing costs incurred by the organizer.
