Chess4win is a nonprofit chess organization based in Ontario, Canada, with most of its activities concentrated in Markham, North York, and the Greater Toronto Area. The organization combines tournament management with chess instruction, camps, social chess, and community activities. Rather than operating only as a traditional chess club, Chess4win runs a broad program designed for juniors, adult club players, titled competitors, and newcomers to organized chess.

The organization maintains a particularly active tournament calendar covering classical, rapid, and junior chess. Its events include FIDE- and Chess Federation of Canada-rated competitions, rating-group Opens, CYCC and Ontario Championship qualifiers, the Ontario Junior Chess Championship, Toronto Rapid Chess Championship, Canadian Junior Scholarship events, and tournaments organized jointly with other Ontario chess organizations. Chess4win also runs regular in-person and online courses, private lessons, and substantial summer-camp programs in Markham and North York.

Min Tao is Chess4win’s principal Tournament Director and operational contact and is consistently identified in current tournament records as the director of Chess4win events. The organization has maintained an exceptionally busy schedule in 2026, including the Toronto Rapid Chess Championship, Ontario Junior Chess Championship, several FIDE Ladder Opens, and the SCC & Chess4win tournament series. Most recently, it completed the Chess4win August FIDE Ladder Open on August 22–23, 2026, while its final 2026 North York summer-camp program continues into early September.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Chess4win organizes tournaments throughout the year rather than concentrating its activity into a single annual festival. Its 2026 calendar began with the SCC & Chess4win Happy New Year Open from January 2–4 and continued with rapid championships, junior qualifiers, weekend classical Opens, and FIDE-rated competitions.

In the first eight months of 2026 alone, the organization staged or co-organized events in virtually every month. These included the February Markham Open, March Break Open, Toronto Rapid Chess Championship, North York FIDE Ladder Opens, the Ontario Junior Championship, Summer Kick-Off Open, and July and August FIDE Ladder tournaments.

Chess4win frequently divides events into rating sections. This format creates competitive opportunities for stronger players while giving developing competitors realistic chances to compete for prizes within their own rating bands.

♟️ FIDE Ladder and Rated Chess

The Chess4win FIDE Ladder Open series has become a recurring part of the organization’s tournament program. Events typically include several rating sections and combine Chess Federation of Canada and FIDE rating where applicable.

The July FIDE Ladder Open, held on July 18–19, 2026 in Markham, used O2000, U2000, U1700, and U1200 sections. The leading section consisted of five classical rounds at 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Min Tao served as Tournament Director, with FA Abdul Rahman El Habboub as Chief Arbiter.

The series continued with the August FIDE Ladder Open on August 22–23, 2026. Again, four rating groups allowed players of substantially different strengths to participate within the same tournament structure. IA Omar Shah served as Chief Arbiter, while Min Tao remained Tournament Director.

🎓 Junior Chess and Championships

Junior development is one of Chess4win’s largest areas of activity. The organization regularly runs CYCC qualifiers, Ontario Chess Championship qualifiers, junior rapid tournaments, scholarship competitions, and rating-restricted events for younger players.

A major event in 2026 was the Ontario Junior Chess Championship, held on June 13–14. Its field ranged from titled and highly rated juniors to developing players competing in lower rating sections.

Chess4win also operates the Canadian Junior Scholarship tournament program. Moreover, its event calendar includes junior-only U1200, U1100, U1000, and similar sections, allowing children to enter competitive chess before progressing into stronger open sections.

This development pathway connects lessons and camps directly with rated tournament play. As a result, juniors can move from instruction to local qualifiers, provincial competition, and stronger national-level events within the same wider Chess4win program.

🌟 SCC & Chess4win Open Series

Chess4win also cooperates with Scarborough Chess Club (SCC) on several larger weekend tournaments.

The 2026 SCC & Chess4win Summer Kick-Off Open took place from June 26–28, 2026 in Markham. The main event included O1900, U1900, and U1500 sections, while a dedicated Junior U1100 competition was held on the final day.

The main sections consisted of six rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The O1900 and U1900 groups were both CFC- and FIDE-rated, while all sections counted toward Canadian ratings.

The series also included the Happy New Year Open in January and March Break Open in March, giving Greater Toronto players several substantial multi-day classical tournaments during the year.

📚 Chess Lessons and Summer Camps

Chess4win is not limited to tournament organization. Its educational program includes in-person courses, online courses, private lessons, tournament preparation, and chess camps.

During summer 2026, Chess4win operated programs at J. Addison School in Markham and North York Academy. The summer schedule extended across multiple weeks from late June into early September.

The camps combine the Chess4win Summer Master Academy with additional educational activities. Depending on the week and location, these have included debating and public speaking, robotics and AI activities, music, creative projects, and other programs.

As of September 1, 2026, the final North York summer-camp week is underway, concluding Chess4win’s extensive summer education program.

🤝 Community Chess

Chess4win describes its broader mission as expanding chess participation through tournaments, lessons, social events, and creative crossover activities.

The organization also provides volunteer opportunities connected with tournament organization, arbiter assistance, chess camps, and arbiter development. In 2024, it hosted a National Arbiter Seminar in Toronto, adding an officiating and tournament-management dimension to its activities.

Chess4win has also cooperated with outside organizations on charity and community events. Consequently, its program connects competitive chess with education, volunteering, youth development, and wider community participation across the Greater Toronto Area.
