The Tønsberg Grand Prix 2026 – VT Tour will take place from November 6–8, 2026, at Villa Møllebakken in Tønsberg, Norway. Organized by Tønsberg Schackklubb, the tournament combines rapid and classical chess across a compact three-day weekend and forms part of the regional Vestfold og Telemark Grand Prix Tour.

The competition is divided into Group A and Group B, following the established VT Tour rating structure around the 1800 mark. The weekend begins with two rapid games at 20 minutes + 10 seconds per move, followed by four classical rounds using 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move.

Both the rapid and classical competitions are separately registered with FIDE for Group A and Group B. The tournament therefore offers participants both FIDE Rapid and FIDE Standard rated chess while their combined results contribute to the wider Grand Prix format.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament uses two separate FIDE-rated time controls. Friday’s opening phase is rapid, while the remaining games are played at classical time control.

Stage Time Control
Rapid Rounds 20 minutes + 10 seconds per move
Classical Rounds 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move

The rapid competitions are independently registered with FIDE as Tonsberg Grand Prix 2026 – VT TOUR A hurtigrunder and VT TOUR B hurtigrunder.

The classical competitions are independently registered as VT TOUR A and VT TOUR B.

Nicolai Brun is listed by FIDE as Chief Arbiter for all four registered competitions.

The mixed structure allows rapid and classical scores to contribute to the player’s overall tournament result rather than being treated as unrelated weekend events.

🧩 Sections / Groups

The VT Tour is structured around two rating groups. This gives stronger players and developing competitors separate tournament fields while preserving the same weekend format.

Group Rating Guide
Group A 1800 and above
Group B Below 1800

The rating division follows the established Vestfold og Telemark GP Tour structure.

If a player’s rating changes during a Grand Prix season, the applicable Norwegian Grand Prix and VT Tour regulations determine the group in which the player competes and accumulates tour points.

ℹ️ Other Information

Tønsberg Grand Prix has a long history. Tønsberg Schackklubb records that the annual tournament was introduced during the chairmanship of Per Snørteland, while club historical material places the first Tønsberg Grand Prix in 1984.

The competition returned in its current mixed rapid/classical form as part of the Vestfold og Telemark GP Tour. The regional series was created through cooperation between the chess clubs of Kragerø, Porsgrunn, Sandefjord, and Tønsberg.

Tour events combine rapid and classical chess. Players receive Tour points according to their final position, creating a separate overall competition in addition to the individual tournament standings.

The previous Tønsberg Grand Prix in 2025 attracted 64 players, with 30 in Group A and 34 in Group B. Group A was won by CM Louis Khoo-Thwe, while Sivert Poulsson Beer won Group B. That edition also used two rapid rounds followed by four classical rounds.

For 2026, FIDE has already registered four components of the event:
