Sjakklubben Stjernen is one of Oslo’s historic and most active chess clubs. Based in Grünerløkka, the club was founded on September 5, 1923 and has developed into an important meeting place for chess players in the Norwegian capital. Today, Stjernen combines more than a century of tradition with a busy program of tournaments, club competitions, and social chess.

The club welcomes players across a wide range of ages, ratings, and experience levels. Moreover, its permanent premises at Seilduksgata 11 provide a dedicated chess environment in central Oslo. The club currently reports 133 members and opens regularly throughout the chess season.

Stjernen focuses strongly on accessible over-the-board chess. Therefore, players can take part in classical, rapid, and blitz competitions every week. The organization also supports junior chess through its dedicated youth section, Stjernen SKU, while its tournament program attracts both local players and competitors from elsewhere in Norway.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess

Sjakklubben Stjernen maintains one of Oslo’s most active weekly tournament programs. Classical chess takes place on Tuesdays, while the club runs its popular Hurtigliga rapid tournaments on Thursdays. In addition, Lynlørdag provides regular Saturday blitz competition.

The club also organizes tournaments within the Norges Grand Prix (NGP) series. These events include dedicated rapid and blitz weekends, which give players the opportunity to earn Grand Prix points while competing in professionally managed tournaments.

Stjernen’s tournament history extends well beyond its regular club program. Most notably, the organization hosted Landsturneringen 2023, the Norwegian national chess championship festival, as part of its 100th-anniversary celebrations.

The championship brought together players from across Norway and included the main classical competitions, the Norwegian Blitz Championship, side events, social activities, and additional chess formats. Consequently, the event demonstrated the club’s ability to manage a major national chess festival.

👶 Junior Chess and Community

The club operates a dedicated junior section called Stjernen SKU. Junior activities take place on Thursdays and emphasize enjoyment, inclusion, learning, and steady improvement.

Young players can learn the fundamentals of chess before progressing toward tournament play. In addition, the club provides a welcoming environment where juniors can meet other players and develop practical over-the-board experience.

Stjernen has also worked actively to broaden participation in chess. Over the years, the club has organized beginner evenings, women’s chess activities, outdoor chess in nearby Birkelunden, courses, and other initiatives designed to introduce new players to the game.

As a result, the organization functions not only as a competitive chess club but also as a community chess center for Grünerløkka and the wider Oslo area.

📜 History and Achievements

Sjakklubben Stjernen was founded on September 5, 1923. During the following decades, it became an established part of Oslo’s chess community and participated actively in Norwegian team and individual competitions.

A major development came when the club established permanent premises in Oslo. These dedicated rooms allowed Stjernen to expand its tournament program and create a genuine chess center with space for regular competitions, training, and social activity.

The club has produced and welcomed generations of strong chess players. Norwegian writer and chess enthusiast André Bjerke was among its former members, while many nationally recognized players have competed for or regularly visited Stjernen.

In 2023, the club celebrated its 100th anniversary. Instead of marking the milestone only internally, Stjernen organized the Norwegian national championship, Landsturneringen, in Oslo. The tournament represented one of the largest projects in the club’s history and reinforced its standing within Norwegian chess.

Today, Sjakklubben Stjernen continues to combine its long history with an unusually high level of weekly activity. Moreover, its permanent venue, Grand Prix tournaments, junior program, and regular classical, rapid, and blitz competitions make it an important part of contemporary chess life in Oslo.
