♟️ About Tønsberg Schackklubb

Tønsberg Schackklubb is a historic chess club based in Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway. Founded in 1918, the club is affiliated with the Norwegian Chess Federation through the regional Vestfold and Telemark chess structure. Its permanent playing base is Villa Møllebakken in central Tønsberg. The club meets there every Monday and has remained an active part of organized Norwegian chess for more than a century. The club combines Classical, Rapid, Blitz, team chess, youth instruction, theory evenings, internal championships, and open tournaments. Its adult program runs throughout the year, while TUSK Barnesjakk provides weekly instruction for children and teenagers. In addition, Tønsberg regularly enters teams in the Østlandsserien and organizes FIDE-rated club competitions. Its principal external event is the long-running Tønsberg Grand Prix, now part of the Vestfold og Telemark GP Tour. John Rune Alfredsen is the current Chairman of Tønsberg Schackklubb and its principal organizational contact. The club entered 2026 with an active competitive program and a new generation of strong players. Anders Helgerud became Club Champion in April, while CM Andreas Skotheim won the spring Rapid competition with a perfect 12/12. The club’s major upcoming event is the Tønsberg Grand Prix 2026 – VT Tour, scheduled for November 6–8.

📜 More Than a Century of Chess

Tønsberg Schackklubb was founded in 1918. The club celebrated its centenary with a dedicated historical book covering the period from its foundation through 2018. Over the decades, the club has developed a substantial tournament tradition. It has organized regional championships, national events, club tournaments, and major open competitions. Tønsberg also hosted the Norwegian Chess Championship in 2008. That event required a large local organizing team and represented an important milestone in the club’s modern history. The club moved into Villa Møllebakken in 2012. The historic building continues to provide its permanent home and is officially recognized as a cultural venue that hosts Tønsberg Schackklubb activities.

🎓 TUSK Youth Chess

Youth development operates through TUSK Barnesjakk, the club’s program for children and teenagers. The group meets every Monday from 17:00 to 18:30 at Villa Møllebakken. Players from approximately seven to 18 years old can participate, from complete beginners to experienced young tournament players. Instruction is adapted to each participant’s level. Moreover, the program combines teaching with practical games and tournaments. The youth section has produced several strong players. In recent years, Jacob Templen Grave, CM Andreas Skotheim, and Aksel Svendsen have represented a new competitive generation connected with Tønsberg chess. For autumn 2026, TUSK runs from September 7 through December 7 under the direction of Håvard Skotheim.

♜ Competitive Chess in 2025–2026

Tønsberg Schackklubb maintains an active internal tournament calendar. Its program includes the Club Championship, Autumn Tournament, Rapid Championship, Blitz tournaments, and theory evenings. Several competitions receive FIDE rating. The club also participates in Norway’s Østlandsserien team competition. During the 2025/26 season, Tønsberg defeated Offerspill 2 by 2.5–1.5 after receiving a first-round walkover against Fredrikstad. Individual development has also remained strong. Anders Helgerud won the 2026 Club Championship after a Rapid playoff against Nicolai Brun. Later, CM Andreas Skotheim scored 12/12 to win the club’s spring Rapid tournament. The 2026 autumn season began in September with separate A and B competitions at Villa Møllebakken.

🏆 Tønsberg Grand Prix

The Tønsberg Grand Prix has a long history within the club. The first edition was organized in 1984, during a period when Jon Kvalsund served as Chairman. Former club leader Per Snørteland also played an important role in establishing the tournament as a recurring event. The tournament returned as part of the new Vestfold og Telemark GP Tour. The regional series links Grand Prix events organized by clubs in Kragerø, Porsgrunn, Sandefjord, and Tønsberg. The Tønsberg Grand Prix Tour 2025 took place on November 7–9. Louis Khoo-Thwe of Oslo Schakselskap finished first on tie-break with 5/6. Håvard Haug and Lars Johan Brodtkorb also scored five points. The Grand Prix format combines locally organized competition with Norway’s wider NGP system. Therefore, participants can earn both tournament results and points toward the regional Tour standings.

🌟 Tønsberg Grand Prix 2026 – VT Tour

The Tønsberg Grand Prix 2026 – VT Tour is scheduled for November 6–8, 2026 in Tønsberg. Tønsberg Schackklubb is the organizer. The competition again forms part of the Vestfold og Telemark GP Tour and the broader Norwegian Grand Prix structure. FIDE has registered separate Group A and Group B competitions together with their Rapid components. The two-group structure allows players to compete within appropriate rating levels while still contributing to the overall Tour. The event completes another active tournament year for Tønsberg Schackklubb. It also continues a Grand Prix tradition that now stretches back more than four decades.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

John Rune Alfredsen currently serves as Chairman of Tønsberg Schackklubb. Norwegian organization records also list him as Chairman of the Board and use his address for the club’s official correspondence. Alfredsen is also an active tournament player with a FIDE rating above 2000. Therefore, his connection with the club combines administration and competitive chess. The wider board includes long-serving club members and tournament officials. Meanwhile, experienced members such as Tor Inge Moseid, Nicolai Brun, Øystein Johnsen, and Håvard Skotheim continue to contribute to tournament activity, communication, youth chess, and club development.
