Schweizer Schach Senioren, officially Vereinigung der Schweizer Schach Senioren / Association des Seniors Suisses des Echecs, is a national association dedicated to senior chess in Switzerland. Founded in 1966, the organization promotes competitive chess and social interaction among older players. Membership is open to women and men who reach the age of 60 during the calendar year in which they join, while membership in the Swiss Chess Federation is also required.

The association has developed one of Switzerland’s most extensive dedicated senior tournament programs. It currently organizes ten tournaments each year, including FIDE-rated classical competitions and a year-end rapid tournament. Events take place in both major cities and Swiss holiday destinations, including Zürich, Mendrisio, Laax-Murschetg, Adelboden, Pontresina, Gstaad, Bern, and Bad Ragaz. Many tournaments are held at hotels, allowing players and accompanying partners to combine competitive chess with longer stays in attractive Swiss destinations.

Anton Brugger currently serves as President and Tournament Director and is the association’s principal official contact. The organization listed 628 members as of April 27, 2026, and around half of its membership participates in its tournaments. Following the Adelboden event in August, the next competition is SSS Pontresina from September 7–16, 2026, followed by Gstaad, Bern, and the traditional year-end rapid tournament in Bad Ragaz.

📜 Senior Chess Since 1966

Schweizer Schach Senioren was founded in 1966 specifically to maintain and promote chess among older players. Over six decades, it has developed from a senior chess association into a nationwide community with members from Switzerland’s German-, French-, and Italian-speaking regions.

The organization combines competitive chess with a strong social component. Players range widely in strength, from recreational competitors to leading Swiss senior players. Therefore, tournaments are designed not only around results and ratings but also around regular opportunities for members to meet one another.

The association publishes a bulletin after its tournaments, containing reports, games, and chess diagrams. Its digital archive has also grown substantially; by August 2026, the website reported more than 36,500 games and 1,090 chess diagrams available online.

🏆 National Senior Tournament Program

The association currently stages ten tournaments annually. Nine are standard-time-control competitions, while the season concludes with a dedicated nine-round rapid tournament in December.

The classical events generally use seven- or nine-round Swiss-system formats. All nine standard tournaments and the year-end rapid event are submitted for FIDE rating.

A characteristic feature of the program is its geographic variety. Rather than concentrating tournaments in one chess center, Schweizer Schach Senioren moves events between cities, Alpine resorts, and spa destinations around Switzerland.

For hotel-based tournaments, the association negotiates special accommodation conditions for members and accompanying partners. However, staying at the official tournament hotel is not compulsory, and participants may arrange accommodation independently.

🌄 2026 Tournament Calendar

The 2026 program includes tournaments in Zürich, Mendrisio, Bad Ragaz, Laax-Murschetg, Adelboden, Pontresina, Gstaad, and Bern.

The SSS Adelboden 2026 tournament took place from August 3–12 at Hotel Hari im Schlegeli. It consisted of nine classical rounds and formed part of the association’s regular summer schedule.

The next event is SSS Pontresina 2026, scheduled for September 7–16 at Sporthotel Pontresina. The tournament consists of nine Swiss-system rounds, is limited to 50 players, and is submitted for international FIDE rating. The time control is 110 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Bernhard Erb serves as Tournament Director and Chief Arbiter, supported by Beat Spielmann.

The program then continues with SSS Gstaad from October 5–11, 2026, a seven-round FIDE-rated tournament at Hotel Gstaaderhof. Eugen Fleischer serves as Tournament Director, while Bernhard Erb is Chief Arbiter.

♜ Bern and Bad Ragaz

Another major autumn event is SSS Bern 2026, scheduled for November 2–12. The tournament continues the association’s classical program with a nine-round Swiss format and FIDE rating.

The season concludes with the Bad Ragaz Year-End Tournament from November 30–December 3, 2026 at Hotel Schloss Ragaz. Unlike the longer standard tournaments, the traditional closing event is played as a nine-round rapid tournament.

Together, these competitions provide members with a continuous tournament calendar stretching across most of the year. Moreover, the combination of city tournaments and residential hotel events gives members a choice between shorter chess trips and longer tournament stays.

🤝 Community and Organization

Schweizer Schach Senioren places particular emphasis on camaraderie and social contact. Hotel tournaments may include talks, film presentations, discussions, and short walks alongside the chess program.

The current executive committee is led by Anton Brugger as President. Martin Kull serves as Vice President, while Eugen Fleischer and Bernhard Erb are among the association’s Tournament Directors. Other officials handle membership administration, finances, chess editorial work, the association bulletin, regional representation, and its website.

This structure allows Schweizer Schach Senioren to maintain a large national program while retaining the community atmosphere that has characterized the organization since its foundation.
