♟️ About the Organizer
Schweizer Schach Senioren, officially named Vereinigung der Schweizer Schach Senioren, is a Swiss association for senior chess players. Its French name is Association des Seniors Suisses des Echecs. The association was founded in 1966 to support and promote chess among older players.
Women and men may apply for membership during the calendar year in which they turn 60. The association also requires its members to belong to the Swiss Chess Federation. Schweizer Schach Senioren has more than 600 members from different regions of Switzerland.
The association combines competitive chess with regular social contact between its members. Players of widely different strengths take part in its activities. The membership includes experienced club players and leading Swiss senior competitors. Anton Brugger serves as president and tournament director.
🏆 Chess Events and Activities
Schweizer Schach Senioren organizes a regular annual tournament program across Switzerland. The official association profile states that it currently runs ten tournaments each year. The program includes seven-round and nine-round standard events, as well as a year-end rapid tournament.
The tournament calendar includes events in cities and holiday destinations throughout Switzerland. Regular locations include Zürich, Mendrisio, Laax-Murschetg, Adelboden, Pontresina, Gstaad, Bern, and Bad Ragaz. The Swiss Chess Federation also lists these senior tournaments in its national event calendar.
The association submits its standard tournaments and year-end rapid event for FIDE rating. For example, SSS Bern 2026 uses a 9-round Swiss-system format with FIDE rating calculation. The event lists Schweizer Schach Senioren as organizer and Bernhard Erb as tournament director and chief arbiter.
🌍 Membership and Senior Chess Community
Many Schweizer Schach Senioren tournaments take place in hotels at Swiss holiday destinations. The association works with hotels to arrange suitable accommodation conditions for members and accompanying partners. However, players do not need to stay at the official hotel to enter a tournament.
The tournament program also places strong emphasis on companionship. Members meet for chess, conversation, and shared leisure activities. Some hotel tournaments include lectures, film presentations, discussions, or short organized walks alongside the playing schedule.
After its tournaments, the association prepares bulletins with reports, selected games, and chess diagrams. Schweizer Schach Senioren also supports online play through its Lichess team, where members have participated in rapid, blitz, and team competitions.
