About the Pedagogical Chess Union

The Pedagogical Chess Union, commonly abbreviated as PShS, is a major Russian chess tournament organizer based in Moscow. Its official Russian name is Педагогический Шахматный Союз. The organization began its activities in 2004 with a focus on children’s chess competitions. Since then, it has expanded its program to include events for juniors, adult club players, beginners, experienced competitors, teams, and titled players. Over more than two decades, the Pedagogical Chess Union has organized more than 3,000 competitions in over 30 cities and 100 different venues. More than 50,000 players and 300 arbiters and organizers have participated in its projects. Sergey Moiseev leads the organization and serves as its principal director.

Tournaments and Competitive Programs

The Pedagogical Chess Union organizes classical, rapid, blitz, team, beginner, and special-format competitions throughout the year. Its calendar includes recurring tournaments in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Suzdal, Voronezh, Krasnodar, and other Russian cities. Established projects include the PShS Classical Chess Cup, Open Sochi, Neva Open, Botvinnik Cup, Moscow City Open, Family League, and tournament series hosted at major shopping, hotel, museum, and conference venues. In addition, the organization manages competitions at VEGAS, Chess Plaza, Riviera, Safmar, Gagarinsky, Europolis, and other public locations. Several events receive official national or FIDE rating when the applicable regulations and technical conditions are met. The organization also works with chess federations, schools, coaches, arbiters, commercial venues, and community institutions.

Chess Education and Professional Organization

The Pedagogical Chess Union places strong emphasis on creating structured and memorable tournament experiences. Its events often divide participants by age, rating, or playing level so that competitors can face suitable opposition. Moreover, the organization uses electronic pairings, online results, game broadcasts, digital tournament administration, and modern playing equipment. Many events include classical chess with notation, rapid and blitz sections, team standings, puzzle-solving contests, family competitions, and activities for young beginners. The organization also supports chess teachers and coaches through professional cooperation, tournament opportunities, and educational initiatives. Furthermore, it has jointly delivered arbiter seminars and official competitions with the Moscow Chess Federation and other regional chess bodies. Through its large national calendar, the Pedagogical Chess Union connects grassroots participation, junior development, rated competition, chess tourism, and professional event management.
