♟️ About Federația Română de Șah

Federația Română de Șah (FRȘah), or Romanian Chess Federation, is the national governing body for chess in Romania. Headquartered in Bucharest, the federation regulates and develops organized chess throughout the country. Its responsibilities include national championships, team leagues, player registration and transfers, ratings, national teams, arbiters, coaches, affiliated clubs, youth chess, women’s chess, university chess, and the approval of rated tournaments. FRȘah operates an extensive national competition system covering classical, rapid, blitz, solving, individual, and team chess. Its calendar includes the Romanian Individual Championships, Superliga, Divizia A and Divizia B, national junior championships, school and university competitions, and the international Romania Grand Prix circuit. The federation also coordinates Romanian participation at World and European championships and supports performance programs for leading juniors and national-team players. Vlad Ardeleanu is the current President of the Romanian Chess Federation, while IM Gabriel Grecescu serves as General Secretary and is the most appropriate primary administrative contact. The federation remains particularly active in 2026. After completing its national individual and junior championships earlier in the year, FRȘah is preparing the National Junior Team Championships, the final Romania Grand Prix stage in Craiova, and the Romanian Superliga and Divizia A championships in October.

📜 History and Romanian Chess

The Romanian Chess Federation was founded on January 4, 1925. Its constitutional structure was formally consolidated on March 14, 1926, when 26 Romanian chess circles joined the organization and a governing committee headed by writer Mihail Sadoveanu was elected. Romania’s connection with international chess organization predates the federation itself. Ion Gudju represented Romania in Paris in 1924 when FIDE was created, which is why Romania is recognized among FIDE’s founding nations. FRȘah celebrated its centenary in 2025, marking 100 years since its formal establishment. Across that period, Romanian chess produced major international figures including GM Florin Gheorghiu, GM Mihail Marin, GM Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu, and generations of strong women and junior players.

🏆 National Championships and Team Chess

FRȘah administers Romania’s principal national championship structure. The 2026 national calendar includes individual Open and Women’s championships, junior championships, amateur events, rapid and blitz competition, solving championships, university events, and team leagues. Team chess is organized through several divisions. The 2026 Superliga and Divizia A championships are scheduled for October 2–11, 2026 at Complex Steaua de Mare in Eforie Nord. Divizia B operates through a longer seasonal format involving affiliated clubs around the country. The federation also stages separate national team championships for juniors. The 2026 National Junior Team Championships will take place from August 31 to September 6 in Mamaia, with competitions across youth age categories.

🎓 Youth Chess and Education

Youth development is one of the federation’s principal areas of activity. The 2026 Romanian Children’s and Junior Championships took place from April 1–9 in Olimp and brought together approximately 500 players across age groups from U8 through U20. The federation links strong national results with opportunities to represent Romania at European and World youth championships. It also coordinates national-team selections, international entries, training camps, and specialized preparation for leading young players. FRȘah additionally operates the Educație prin Șah program, which promotes chess within education. The initiative works with schools, teachers, children, and chess instructors and has expanded into national competitions and large public chess activities. Other development projects include Școala Marilor Maeștri and performance programs for promising juniors.

🌍 Romania Grand Prix and International Chess

The Romania Grand Prix has become one of FRȘah’s principal international tournament projects. The 2026 circuit consists of five stages combining classical and rapid chess in several Romanian cities. The final event of the current series, Craiova Grand Prix Rapid 2026, is scheduled for September 12–13, 2026 at Ramada Plaza Craiova. The tournament forms part of a circuit that brings Romanian players into regular competition with Grandmasters, International Masters, talented juniors, and international visitors. Beyond the Grand Prix, the federation cooperates on major international chess projects held in Romania and supports Romanian participation abroad. Its wider competitive program therefore connects grassroots club chess and junior development with elite international competition.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Vlad Ardeleanu serves as President of Federația Română de Șah. The current Board of Directors also includes Vice Presidents Andrei Diaconescu and GM Alin Berescu. IM Gabriel Grecescu serves as General Secretary and manages a central administrative role within the federation. WGM Iulia Ionică is Federal Coach, while the board also includes Alin Câmpeanu, Marius Ceteraș, Lucian Gîlea, Ciprian Nanu, and Alin Toma. FRȘah additionally operates specialist commissions covering arbiters, trainers, competition, women’s chess, education and junior chess, ratings and transfers, university chess, online chess, regulations, ethics, and other areas of national chess administration.
