♟️ About Cercle d’Échecs Levallois-Potemkine

Cercle d’Échecs Levallois-Potemkine is a historic chess club based in Levallois-Perret, immediately northwest of Paris, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code M92018. Today, it combines competitive chess, junior development, adult training, national team competition, tournaments, and regular social play.

The club officially dates its creation to 1926. Its roots, however, go back to 1921, when Russian émigré Piotr Potemkine began welcoming chess players to his home in Paris. After Potemkine died in 1926, his friends formally established a chess circle in his name. The club initially met at venues in Paris, including the Russian Conservatory. During its early history, prominent players such as Ossip Bernstein, Savielly Tartakower, Nicolas Rossolimo, and Eugène Znosko-Borovsky participated in its chess life.

The Cercle Potemkine moved from Paris to Levallois-Perret in 1988. Five years later, support from the Municipality of Levallois enabled the club to move into municipal association facilities. Today, the FFE lists its headquarters and playing room at the Maison des Associations, 34 rue Pierre Brossolette, 92300 Levallois-Perret.

Nicolas Fauroux currently serves as President of Levallois-Potemkine. Meanwhile, Hugo Marsac acts as an official club contact and manages communication for the club’s Centenary Rapid tournament in 2026.

🏆 Centenary Tournament and Competitive Activity

The year 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Cercle Potemkine. To celebrate this milestone, the club organizes the Rapide du Centenaire de Levallois-Potemkine on October 10, 2026.

The FFE-homologated tournament takes place at the Pavillon des Fêtes de Levallois. Players compete across nine Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 12 minutes plus three seconds per move. Moreover, the tournament receives both French and FIDE rapid rating.

The centenary competition offers €800 in guaranteed prizes when participation reaches the required level. The organizers limit the tournament to 92 players. In addition, category and special prizes broaden the award structure beyond the overall podium.

Tournament organization remains part of the club’s wider competitive program. Levallois-Potemkine also organizes internal competitions, training events, rapid play, and other chess activities during the season.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Tradition

Team chess has played an important role throughout the club’s history. Cercle Potemkine won the Paris club championship before World War II. In the 1976/77 season, while celebrating its 50th anniversary, the club again achieved first place in the Paris Île-de-France championship.

The same anniversary season brought individual success. Didier Chevallier won a Paris youth championship, while Georges Nora became individual Paris champion. Therefore, the club’s history combines team achievements with individual player development.

Today, Levallois-Potemkine continues to field teams in French national competition. The club’s adult players compete within the national league structure, while younger members also represent Levallois in organized youth team chess.

Furthermore, the club mixes younger and adult competitors within its broader competitive environment. This structure gives developing players opportunities to progress from training into official league and tournament play.

🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development

Junior development is a major part of Levallois-Potemkine’s current activity. The club welcomes around 130 members each season, with more than 100 young players according to its current official presentation.

Young members receive structured instruction adapted to age and playing level. In addition, the club provides personalized support for players who want to participate in tournaments and championships.

The current teaching team includes International Master Melkior Cotonnec and experienced player and instructor Alain Viot. Their training program covers developing players as well as stronger juniors preparing for competitive chess.

Levallois-Potemkine has a long record in youth team competition. In 2010, the club reached the Top Jeunes, France’s highest youth team division, which at that time brought together the country’s 16 leading youth teams. Today, the club continues to field a team in national youth competition.

Moreover, the club organizes intensive chess camps during school holidays. For example, Melkior Cotonnec led a multi-day training camp in July 2026 for club juniors and visiting players who wanted to improve their competitive skills.

🧠 Adult Training and Club Life

Levallois-Potemkine also provides regular activities for adult players. Members can attend free-play sessions and internal tournaments on Monday evenings. Meanwhile, intermediate and advanced training sessions normally take place every second Friday.

The club welcomes players with different levels of experience. Therefore, an adult can join for recreational chess while stronger competitors can use the same environment for training and preparation for league matches.

Regular club activity takes place throughout the week at the Maison des Associations. The current FFE schedule lists chess sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and selected weekends when competitions take place.

This combination of structured lessons, social chess, internal tournaments, youth programs, and team competition allows Levallois-Potemkine to serve both recreational and ambitious competitive players.

🌟 A Century of Chess Heritage

Few elements define Levallois-Potemkine as strongly as its historical connection with Russian émigré chess in Paris. After the Russian Revolution, several important chess players settled in France and became connected with the Cercle Potemkine.

Among them were Bernstein and Tartakower, who occupied leading boards for the club when available. Eugène Znosko-Borovsky served for many years as secretary-general. World Champion Alexander Alekhine also visited the club and gave lectures, while Emanuel Lasker delivered a memorable lecture at the Russian lycée in Paris at the club’s invitation.

The club eventually evolved from its original Russian émigré community into a broader French chess association. Its move to Levallois in 1988 opened another chapter in that history.

Consequently, the 1926–2026 centenary connects a century of chess heritage with the club’s current focus on youth education, competitive teams, tournaments, and community chess in Levallois-Perret.
