Chess 4U is a chess congress organizing team led by Rebecca Gardiner and Colin Gardiner in Cornwall, England. The team specializes in traditional over-the-board weekend congresses and currently organizes events in several parts of South West England. Its tournaments use structured rating sections, Swiss pairings, classical time controls, and English Chess Federation rating.

The Chess 4U name has a documented tournament history extending back to at least 2019, when official congress material already directed tournament payments to Chess 4U. Since then, Rebecca and Colin Gardiner have continued to build their tournament-organizing activity. In addition to Chess 4U events, both currently serve as Congress Organizers for the Cornwall County Chess Association, giving them an established role in the wider Cornwall chess community.

Rebecca Gardiner is the principal public contact for Chess 4U. The English Chess Federation maintains organizer records for both Rebecca individually and Rebecca & Colin Gardiner C4U. Moreover, current Chess 4U tournaments consistently direct entries, enquiries, and payments through Rebecca. Colin Gardiner works alongside her in congress organization and also holds an official congress-organizer role with the Cornwall County Chess Association.

🏆 Weymouth Chess Congress

The Weymouth Chess Congress is one of Chess 4U’s principal recurring tournament projects. The series began in 2023, when the first Chess 4U Weymouth Congress attracted 79 players, including 22 players from Dorset. The event subsequently returned in 2024 and 2025, establishing an annual October congress on the south coast.

Chess 4U uses the Hotel Rembrandt in Weymouth as the congress venue. The event follows the traditional British weekend-congress structure, with several rating sections and ECF-rated standard-play games. Moreover, Rebecca Gardiner manages entries and participant enquiries, while experienced arbiter John Constable has worked with the organizing team at previous editions.

The congress has developed steadily through successive editions. The second edition took place in October 2024 with Open, U1850, and U1550 sections. Meanwhile, the third edition returned in October 2025 with adjusted rating categories. This approach allows Chess 4U to adapt the sections as rating distributions and ECF regulations change.

🌟 4th Weymouth Chess 4U Congress 2026

Chess 4U organizes the 4th Weymouth Chess 4U Congress from October 16–18, 2026 at the Weymouth Hotel Rembrandt, 12–18 Dorchester Road, Weymouth.

The 2026 congress consists of three sections: Open, U1750, and U1550. Players compete over five Swiss rounds with a time control of 75 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. In addition, all sections receive ECF standard-play rating.

Round 1 begins on Friday evening at 19:00. Two rounds follow on Saturday, while the final two rounds take place on Sunday. Therefore, the event preserves the familiar five-round weekend format used in previous Chess 4U congresses.

The published prize structure provides £200 for first place, £130 for second, £70 for third, and a £40 rating prize in each section. Consequently, each section carries £440 in listed awards. Chess 4U also manages the entry process, accommodation arrangements with the hotel, and participant communication.

Rebecca Gardiner serves as the main congress contact. Players can enter through the Congress Org UK system or by postal entry, while payments go directly to Chess 4U. This administrative structure clearly identifies Chess 4U as the organizer rather than the hotel, Weymouth Chess Club, or another Dorset organization.

♜ Somerset New Year Chess Congress

Chess 4U’s activity extends beyond Weymouth. The team also administers the long-running Somerset New Year Chess Congress in Clevedon, North Somerset.

The 8th Somerset New Year Chess Congress took place on January 10–11, 2026 at the Walton Park Hotel. Like the Weymouth tournament, it used a five-round Swiss format with 75 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and ECF standard-play rating.

The 2026 competition offered U2050, U1750, and U1550 sections. Moreover, official registration instructions required postal cheques to be payable to Chess 4U and directed participants to Rebecca Gardiner for further information.

The previous 2025 edition carried the Chess 4U name directly as the Chess 4U 7th Somerset New Year Chess Congress. Therefore, the Somerset series provides additional evidence that Chess 4U operates as a recurring tournament-organizing identity rather than merely a name created specifically for the Weymouth event.

🤝 Cornwall Chess Organization

Rebecca and Colin Gardiner also contribute substantially to organized chess in Cornwall. The Cornwall County Chess Association currently lists both of them as Congress Organizers.

Their work includes the county’s established congress program. For example, Rebecca Gardiner organized the 6th Cornwall Spring Congress at the Falmouth Hotel in May 2026, while John Constable served as controller. The event incorporated the Cornwall Championship as well as the Falmouth Cup and Penwith Cup.

Rebecca has handled Cornwall congress administration for several years, including entries, tournament enquiries, and participant communication. Meanwhile, Colin works alongside her as a fellow congress organizer. Consequently, their experience with Chess 4U forms part of a wider record of tournament administration across Cornwall and South West England.

Chess 4U and the Cornwall County Chess Association should nevertheless remain separate organizer identities. Cornwall County Chess Association runs its county competitions under its own structure. By contrast, events such as the Weymouth Congress and Somerset New Year Congress use Chess 4U for payments and tournament administration.
