Klub Szachowy LASKER Barlinek is a chess club based in Barlinek, northwestern Poland, the birthplace of second World Chess Champion Emanuel Lasker. 📜 History and Emanuel Lasker Tradition

Barlinek has a distinctive place in chess history because Emanuel Lasker was born there in 1868. The town began organizing tournaments in his memory long before the creation of the present club. A Lasker memorial tournament was held in Barlinek in 1966, while a larger international festival tradition began in 1993.

A chess section connected with Pogoń Barlinek was established in 1992. The current Klub Szachowy LASKER Barlinek was later formally registered in September 2006, creating a dedicated organization for chess development in the town.

Today, the club continues to use Emanuel Lasker’s legacy as a central part of its tournament and cultural activity. Cooperation with German chess organizations, the Emanuel Lasker Society, and other partners helps maintain an international dimension to events held in his birthplace.

🎓 Training and Community Chess

Chess education is one of LASKER Barlinek’s principal activities. The club’s current official website describes training programs for children, young people, and adults, together with support for players who want to develop their competitive skills.

Junior development has been part of the organization’s work for many years. Young members take part in tournaments around the Zachodniopomorskie region, while the club also creates competitions specifically for school-age players and beginners.

The club additionally works with local institutions to bring chess into community events. For example, in April 2026 LASKER co-organized the 12th Chess Championship of Altar Servers of the Szczecin-Kamień Archdiocese, which brought 26 participants to Barlinek.

🏆 International E. Lasker Rapid Chess Festival

The International E. Lasker Rapid Chess Festival is the club’s principal current international event. LASKER Barlinek organizes the festival together with Barlinecki Ośrodek Kultury and the Municipality of Barlinek.

The 6th edition, held on August 23, 2025, attracted 108 registered players from Poland, Germany, and Ukraine. Krzysztof Wolski served as Festival Director, while the program featured separate Open and junior competitions.

The 7th edition will take place on August 29, 2026. Tournament A is a nine-round FIDE Rapid-rated competition using a 12+3 time control. A separate junior tournament provides competition for players under 18. The Open offers PLN 2,100 in cash prizes, together with additional awards, while the overall event has a maximum capacity of 90 players.

FA Arkadiusz Korbal will serve as arbiter, while Krzysztof Wolski again handles tournament organization and registrations. The German Chess Federation, Emanuel Lasker Society, and ChessBase are among the international partners supporting the event.

🤝 Polish-German Chess Cooperation

The geographical position of Barlinek and the international legacy of Emanuel Lasker give the club particularly strong links with German chess.

German players regularly participate in the Lasker festival, while Hans-Jürgen Hochgräfe assists with communication and registration for participants from Germany. The 2026 tournament has also been promoted through German regional chess federations.

This cooperation allows a relatively small-town chess club to combine local junior development with an international tournament tradition centered on one of the most important figures in chess history.
