37th Cracovia International Chess Festival 2026
The 37th Cracovia International Chess Festival 2026 brings nine days of tournament chess to Hotel Galaxy, Gęsia 22a, Kraków, Poland, from December 27, 2026, through January 4, 2027. Organized by the Małopolski Chess Association (Małopolski Związek Szachowy), this established New Year festival combines five nine-round classical sections with four shorter seven-round events for developing players and juniors. From titled competitors to children playing their first major festival, participants can enter the division that matches their FIDE rating and age.
In addition, the official prize schedule lists PLN 85,800 in cash awards (approximately US$21,770) across Groups A–I, including PLN 74,300 for the nine-round Groups A–E. Group A welcomes players rated 2100 and above and offers a PLN 11,000 first prize. Groups B, C and D serve progressively lower rating ranges, while Group E welcomes senior players aged 60 and over. Furthermore, all nine groups have FIDE rating classification under the festival regulations. Meanwhile, a separate blitz event, Chess960 and bughouse add variety to the holiday program.
The playing venue is a four-star hotel near Kraków’s Kazimierz district and the Vistula River, with an official festival accommodation offer and convenient rail connections through Kraków Główny and Kraków Grzegórzki. Importantly, the program stretches across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, making room for both chess and holiday activities. Below are the verified prizes, entry fees, round schedule, links for each registration group, hotel options and practical airport and railway directions.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The festival uses the Swiss system in each of its nine rating or age groups. The five longer competitions, A–E, are scheduled for nine rounds over the full December 27–January 4 period. According to the official brochure, their classical clock at 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 additional minutes and a 30-second increment for every move. Consequently, this provides a substantial standard-chess time allowance and makes the longer games relevant for players developing classical tournament experience.
The shorter F–I program runs over December 27–29 and uses seven Swiss rounds at a different setting: 30 minutes plus a 30-second Bronstein delay per move. Group F is a rating-limited Open, while Groups G–I are for younger juniors. The organizer’s regulations include FIDE rating classification for the event groups, though the distinct shorter clock means competitors should prepare for a different pace from the nine-round tournament.
Players may request one half-point bye in Rounds 1–6, provided they notify the arbiter by the end of the final game in the preceding round. For late arrivals, the published default time is 30 minutes. Furthermore, each group has its own ChessManager entry and pairings list, making it easy to check where a particular player belongs. Because the divisions overlap at certain rating boundaries, entrants should use the organizer’s prescribed group registration form instead of assuming the most convenient rating bracket is automatically appropriate.

The complete official prize table lists every place and its award. Accordingly, prize recipients must collect their awards in person at the festival closing ceremony under the organizer’s rules.
♟️ Sections / Groups
With nine groups, Cracovia offers suitable competition for a broad playing population without forcing a junior, senior or developing player into the top Open. Notably, the rating bands for Groups A–D partially overlap. Therefore, participants within an overlap range can choose among eligible divisions according to the registration rules and their playing ambitions. Group E is a separate 60+ senior tournament, while the short-format sections F–I run on the festival’s opening three days.
| Group | Rating / Age and Format |
|---|---|
| 🏆 Group A | FIDE Standard 2100+; 9 rounds; first prize PLN 11,000 |
| ♟️ Group B | FIDE Standard 1800–2149; 9 rounds |
| ♟️ Group C | FIDE Standard 1601–1899; 9 rounds |
| ♟️ Group D | FIDE Standard under 1700; 9 rounds |
| 👴 Group E | Seniors aged 60+; 9 rounds |
| ⚡ Group F | Open for players rated under 1800; 7 rounds |
| 🌱 Group G | Under-12, FIDE under 1800; 7 rounds |
| 🌱 Group H | Under-10, FIDE under 1800; 7 rounds |
| 🌱 Group I | Under-8, FIDE under 1800; 7 rounds |
In particular, Group A’s higher rating floor makes it particularly relevant to titled and highly rated competitors visiting Kraków for the New Year holiday period. By contrast, Groups B–D give club players an extended nine-game event with strong rating-range prizes. For young children, the December 27–29 U8/U10/U12 competitions create a shorter festival visit with awards by gender and additional physical prizes. The organizer uses the December 1, 2026 FIDE rating list for group classification.

🏛️ Organizer
The Małopolski Chess Association (Małopolski Związek Szachowy) organizes the Cracovia International Chess Festival as part of its regional chess development program. Additionally, the association brings together clubs, school chess groups and regional organizations throughout southern Poland. Beyond this major year-end event, it supports individual and team championship competitions, coaching, arbiter training and youth programs in the Lesser Poland region.
The official tournament director is Kamila Kałużna-Turcza, who also serves as president of the Małopolski Chess Association. Over the decades, Cracovia’s modern history includes decades of participation by local and international competitors. For example, the 35th edition drew almost 800 participants from 33 federations, illustrating the scale of the event’s role in Poland’s winter chess season. The 2026 competition is the 37th edition.
The festival publishes cracoviachess@gmail.com and telephone +48 693 046 440 for tournament questions and accommodation requests. The Małopolski Chess Association’s website explains its wider activities, while the Cracovia event website provides the actual forms, session schedule and starting lists for this edition.
📍 Venue
The tournament takes place at Hotel Galaxy, Gęsia 22a, 31-535 Kraków, a four-star property near the Vistula River and the Kazimierz neighborhood. Moreover, the hotel’s meeting facilities, accommodation and food service make it practical for families and titled players attending multiple tournament days. The hotel itself lists a reception telephone number of +48 12 342 81 00 and publishes the venue’s full Gęsia Street address.
The regional tourism office records the hotel’s position at 50.053631° N, 19.958638° E. This is the verified property position for travel and future WordPress geolocation fields, not a generic Kraków city-center coordinate. The hotel’s surroundings include the Galeria Kazimierz shopping area and access toward the Vistula boulevards, while the city’s historic Old Town is farther to the west.
🏨 Accommodation
The organizer offers rooms and boarding options for festival participants, with reservations handled through cracoviachess@gmail.com by December 10, 2026. After organizers confirm availability, the organizer requires a nonrefundable deposit equal to the cost of the first night’s stay. The official accommodation table provides breakfast-inclusive pricing across the host hotel, a boarding residence and Optima. Therefore, booking these options directly through the festival gives participants a straightforward channel for confirming the accommodation terms.
| Hotel or Residence | Verified Address and Accommodation |
|---|---|
| 🏨 Hotel Galaxy — playing venue | ul. Gęsia 22a, 31-535 Kraków. Organizer’s breakfast-inclusive offer lists PLN 320, 205 and 170 across its single-, double- and triple-occupancy categories. Official hotel and booking information. |
| 🏠 ZSE No. 1 Boarding Residence | ul. Kamieńskiego 49, Kraków. Festival brochure lists PLN 95 for the two-person category and PLN 85 for the three-/four-person category, with breakfast. |
| 🏨 SCSK Optima | ul. Malborska 65, 30-646 Kraków. Festival accommodation options from PLN 145 to PLN 190 across listed room categories. Official property details. |
| 🏨 PURO Kraków Kazimierz | ul. Halicka 14a, 31-036 Kraków. An independently bookable hotel in Kazimierz, useful for travelers prioritizing the historic neighborhood. Official hotel website and booking. |
Visitors should reconfirm festival rates when making reservations, since availability and room occupancy affect the final amount payable. For early rounds, Hotel Galaxy is the simplest choice for the 9:00 AM morning rounds and the post-New Year’s double-round day. Alternatively, SCSK Optima and the boarding residence offer different budget options but require a separate city journey to Gęsia Street. However, PURO operates independently and does not participate in the festival accommodation package.
🚆 How to Get There
✈️ From John Paul II Kraków–Balice Airport (KRK)
For international visitors, the main arrival point is through John Paul II Kraków–Balice Airport, west of the city. Conveniently, the airport railway station sits next to the terminal, accessible via a covered footbridge behind the multistory car park. The SKA1 airport train connects Kraków Airport with Kraków Główny and onward stops. The airport currently quotes PLN 20 for the airport-to-main-station rail ticket, with luggage carried free of charge.
From Kraków Główny, take a taxi or an appropriate tram connection toward Gęsia Street / Kazimierz and Hotel Galaxy. The SKA1 line also serves Kraków Grzegórzki, a useful station in the wider hotel neighborhood for travelers choosing their last transfer. Service patterns can change around the Christmas and New Year holidays, so consult the official airport railway guide and Koleje Małopolskie timetable before selecting a December 27 arrival.
🚆 Kraków Główny Railway Station
Kraków Główny is the main rail terminal for trains from Warsaw, Katowice, Rzeszów and other Polish destinations, with international connections as well. Moreover, the station connects with public transport and the Galeria Krakowska shopping complex. From the station, a taxi provides an uncomplicated transfer to Hotel Galaxy, ul. Gęsia 22a, especially for visitors carrying luggage or chess equipment.
Participants who prefer public transport can use the municipal tram and bus network or a suburban rail journey toward Grzegórzki. However, the best connection depends on the railway arrival platform and the event-day timetable. Players entering on the opening afternoon should allow time for the festival office and the 4:00 PM first-round start, particularly if arriving on the same day.
🚋 Kraków Public Transport and the Kazimierz Neighborhood
Hotel Galaxy stands east of historic Kazimierz, by the Vistula and shopping district of Galeria Kazimierz. Additionally, Kraków’s trams and buses provide links between the Old Town, main station, Kazimierz and surrounding neighborhoods. For those staying at PURO Kazimierz or another nearby property can consider walking or local transport depending on their accommodation and mobility needs.
For families staying farther from the tournament hotel, the double-round and early-morning schedules make a dependable commute essential. Check routes through the official MPK Kraków network and allow flexibility for holiday service changes. Kraków’s historic center attracts visitors at New Year, so public transport may be preferable to driving into the most crowded streets.
🚗 Driving and Tournament Check-in
Drivers can navigate directly to Hotel Galaxy, Gęsia 22a. The official prospectus notes that the venue lies within a paid parking zone, so visitors should include parking costs when comparing a car trip with train travel. Hotel Galaxy has conference and guest facilities, but drivers should confirm parking with the hotel.
Importantly, the tournament office operates from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on December 26 and 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM on December 27. The organizers allow players with confirmed payment on the starting list to proceed directly to their first round. Finally, keep the relevant group confirmation and festival contact details on your phone when traveling to the venue.
ℹ️ Other Information
⚡ Blitz, Bughouse and Chess960
In addition, the Cracovia program contains additional short-format competitions. A bughouse event is scheduled for December 30 at 10:00 AM, with an entry fee of PLN 50 per pair. The blitz tournament begins at 4:00 PM on January 1 with a PLN 60 entry fee, and a Chess960 tournament follows at 10:00 AM on January 3 with a PLN 30 entry fee. These side events have their own registrations on the festival website.
🎄 Playing Through New Year in Kraków
Cracovia is distinctive because it begins just after Christmas and finishes in the first week of January. The nine-day classical program spans New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with January 1 reserved from A–E play. That creates opportunities for participants to enjoy Kraków’s Old Town, Kazimierz restaurants and winter atmosphere while still leaving time for game preparation. Families with juniors in Groups G–I can opt for the three-day December 27–29 program instead of a full holiday-week stay.
🏅 Prize Collection and Player Responsibilities
The festival regulations require prize winners to collect their awards in person at the closing ceremony. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel and personal insurance, while parents and guardians remain responsible for junior competitors. Players attending the longer classical groups should plan to remain in Kraków for the 3:00 PM closing on January 4, especially when competing for one of the main awards.
