Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano, also known in competition as Ébano Barrio Nuevo, is a chess club based in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Founded at the end of 1989, the club has maintained continuous competitive activity for more than three decades. Its permanent base is the Centro Ciudadano Barrio Nuevo, where it hosts chess training, club activities, league matches, and tournaments.

The club combines high-level team competition with chess education and community activity. Ébano fields several teams in the Tenerife leagues and regularly competes in the Campeonato de Canarias por Equipos. In addition, it runs classes for players of different ages and levels, organizes FIDE-rated tournaments, and participates in public initiatives that bring chess into the wider La Laguna community.

Juan Luis Marín Carvajal is a principal organizational contact and has served as Technical Director of Ébano tournaments, including the II Open 60+30 Ébano in March 2026. The club has enjoyed another active season in 2026: Ébano Barrio Nuevo A finished runner-up in the Canary Islands Team Championship and later represented the club in Spain’s national Second Division. 📜 History and Development

Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano was founded in late 1989 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The club developed around the Barrio Nuevo area and has participated continuously in official Canary Islands chess competitions since its foundation. Over the years, Ébano has built a strong record in both Tenerife and regional team chess. The club’s official history records two Canary Islands team championships as well as multiple Tenerife titles. It has also represented the Canary Islands in the Spanish national club championships.

One of its strongest recent seasons came in 2024. Ébano Barrio Nuevo A won the Campeonato de Canarias por Equipos with a perfect six match victories. Moreover, Ébano Barrio Nuevo B finished third, demonstrating the depth of the club’s competitive structure. The first team then finished sixth in the 2024 Spanish Second Division Club Championship.

In 2025, the Federación de Asociaciones Vecinales de Aguere recognized Ébano for its long-standing contribution to sporting life in La Laguna. The award coincided with more than 35 years of continuous club activity.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Results

Team chess remains central to the club’s identity. Ébano enters several squads across the Tenerife league system, allowing experienced competitors, developing players, and juniors to represent the organization.

The club again produced a strong regional result in 2026. Ébano Barrio Nuevo A finished second in the Campeonato de Canarias por Equipos, scoring five wins and one draw from six matches. The team finished level on match points and game points with champion La Caja de Vecindario A, with the title decided by a later tiebreak criterion. Ébano Barrio Nuevo B also competed in the same regional championship.

In August 2026, the club participated in the Campeonato de España por Equipos de Segunda División in Linares. Ébano recorded victories against C.A. Cibeles de Mérida, Nazarí Fundación Caja Rural Granada, Caja Rural de Sevilla, and Vecindario, as well as a draw against Metro de Marbella. The team eventually finished 12th among 47 clubs, level on points with the seventh-placed team. Therefore, Ébano continued to represent Tenerife and the Canary Islands at national club level during the 2026 season.

🎓 Chess Training and Community Activity

Ébano operates a chess school from its Barrio Nuevo headquarters. The club provides instruction for different ages and playing strengths, from children learning the fundamentals to adults seeking to improve their competitive play. The club also treats chess as a social and educational activity. Consequently, its program extends beyond formal league competition. Ébano has participated in community initiatives such as the Fiesta del Deporte Lagunera, La Noche en Blanco, and Día de las Familias.

These activities introduce chess to residents who may not yet participate in federated competition. At the same time, the permanent club venue gives regular members a place to train, analyze games, meet other players, and prepare for tournaments.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano organizes a varied program of classical and alternative chess competitions in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The II Open 60+30 Ébano 2026 took place from March 23–28 at the Centro Ciudadano Barrio Nuevo. The seven-round Swiss tournament used a classical time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds per move and counted for FIDE Standard rating. Juan Luis Marín Carvajal served as Technical Director.

In June, the club organized the II Torneo Ajedrez 960 Ébano 2026. The Chess960 tournament attracted 57 players, including FIDE-titled competitors and a substantial representation from Ébano itself. This format adds variety to the club’s tournament program by reducing the importance of conventional opening preparation. Ébano has also played an important organizational role in the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Recent editions have been organized jointly with the Organismo Autónomo de Deportes de La Laguna, while the wider festival has included classical, blitz, and rapid competitions.

🌟 III Open 60+30 Ébano 2026

The III Open 60+30 Ébano 2026 is scheduled for October 22–25, 2026 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The competition will use a seven-round Swiss system and a time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds per move from move one. Results will count for FIDE Standard rating. Juan Alonso Febles García is listed as Tournament Director, while IA José Antonio Blázquez Múrez serves as Chief Arbiter. The event receives cooperation from the Organismo Autónomo de Deportes de La Laguna, Deporte Lagunero, and Centro Ciudadano Barrio Nuevo.

The third edition continues the club’s growing 60+30 tournament series. Moreover, it provides local and visiting players with another internationally rated classical event in Tenerife outside the larger summer chess festivals.
