The 2nd Kapadokya International Open Chess Tournament will take place from August 17 to 23, 2026, in Ürgüp, Nevşehir, Turkey. The event brings international classical chess to Cappadocia, one of Turkey’s most distinctive cultural and tourist regions.

Türkiye Satranç Federasyonu (TSF), internationally known as the Turkish Chess Federation, is the national governing body for chess in Türkiye. Headquartered in Ankara, it administers national championships, leagues, ratings, player licensing, national teams, arbiters, coaches, clubs, and a nationwide network of provincial and district representatives. Türkiye has been a member of FIDE since 1962, and TSF represents the country in international chess competition.
The federation operates one of Türkiye’s broadest organized sports structures. Its 2024–2028 strategic plan reports more than 1.4 million licensed chess players and representation across all 81 provinces and more than 500 districts. TSF organizes national individual and team championships from junior through senior level, coordinates school and university chess, manages the Turkish Super League and lower national leagues, and works with municipalities and local authorities to stage major international opens throughout the country.
As of August 2026, Fethi Apaydın serves as President of Türkiye Satranç Federasyonu, while Fırat Yalçın is General Secretary and the most practical primary administrative contact. TSF has maintained an extensive 2026 calendar, including national youth championships, the Turkish Women’s Championship, the Super League, First and Second Leagues, Turkish Clubs Championship, and a series of large international opens in cities including Manisa, Çeşme, Pamukkale, Burhaniye, Cappadocia, Malatya, Istanbul, and Gaziantep.
📜 History and Development
Organized chess activity in Türkiye developed during the first half of the 20th century. Chess associations were established in Ankara in 1938 and Istanbul in 1943, while similar activity developed in other major cities.
Official TSF historical records trace the federation’s establishment to 1954 under Türkiye’s associations legislation. Türkiye joined FIDE in 1962, and the national team made its Chess Olympiad debut that year in Varna, Bulgaria.
The federation became part of the state sports structure in 1991. In 2004, it was among the first Turkish sports federations to receive autonomous status under new sports legislation. Since then, TSF has developed a large national competition, licensing, coaching, and youth-development infrastructure.
🏆 National Championships and Leagues
TSF administers Türkiye’s principal national chess competitions. Its program includes the Turkish Chess Championship, Turkish Women’s Chess Championship, Turkish Cup, Turkish Super League, First League, Second League, and Turkish Clubs Chess Championship.
The 2025–2026 Turkish Super League was held in Ankara in August 2026. At the same time, the First League took place in Ankara, while the Second League and Turkish Clubs Championship were staged in Denizli-Pamukkale. These competitions form the principal national team structure for Turkish chess clubs.
The federation also runs major individual championships. The 2026 Arzum Turkish Women’s Chess Championship took place from May 9–15, while the 2025 Turkish Chess Championship concluded in Gaziantep in December 2025 with GM Işık Can winning the national title.
🎓 Youth and Scholastic Chess
Youth development is a central part of TSF’s work. The federation organizes national championships across age groups, school competitions, youth team events, training programs, and selection pathways for Turkish national teams.
The 2026 Turkish Children’s and Youth Chess Championships took place in Antalya from January 24–31. Competition covered ages 7–12 in the children’s categories and 13–18 in the youth categories. The event attracted 2,884 players from across Türkiye, making it one of the federation’s largest annual competitions.
TSF also organized the Turkish Children’s and Youth Team Championships in Karaman in April and May 2026. 114 teams and 571 players competed across U12 Open, U12 Girls, U18 Open, and U18 Girls categories.
🌍 International Open Tournaments
TSF works extensively with municipalities, provincial sports authorities, and other partners to stage international open tournaments around Türkiye.
Its 2026 international calendar has included the Mesir International Open in Manisa, Çeşme International Open and Rapid Tournament, Pamukkale International Open, Burhaniye-Ören International Open, Cappadocia International Open, Malatya Altın Kayısı International Open, Istanbul International Open, and Gazi International Open in Gaziantep.
The 9th Istanbul International Open, held from August 24–30, 2026, offered ₺1 million in cash prizes. Meanwhile, the inaugural Gazi International Open, scheduled for August 31–September 6 in Gaziantep, offers ₺1.5 million in prizes.
These tournaments complement the federation’s national championship program while giving Turkish players regular opportunities to compete against international opposition and pursue FIDE ratings and titles.
🏛️ Organization and Leadership
Fethi Apaydın was elected President of Türkiye Satranç Federasyonu in October 2024, succeeding Gülkız Tulay, who had led the federation for 12 years and was subsequently named Honorary President.
The federation’s professional administration is headed by General Secretary Fırat Yalçın. Separate departments manage national teams, junior national teams, tournaments, arbiters, provincial representatives, coaches, player licensing, ratings, finance, and communications.
TSF has scheduled an Extraordinary Elective General Assembly for September 10, 2026, so its elected leadership structure may change following that meeting.
