♟️ About Virginia Chess Federation

Virginia Chess Federation, Inc. (VCF) is the official US Chess State Affiliate for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The federation also operates under the name Virginia Chess. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes tournament chess, chess education, scholastic development, and organized play throughout Virginia.

The federation dates to 1934. That year, VCF held its inaugural state championship in Staunton over Labor Day weekend, with John N. Buck taking the title. Organized statewide chess existed in Virginia before VCF, but the current federation traces its history to that 1934 organization. Moreover, VCF has maintained the state championship tradition for more than nine decades.

Robert “Robby” Jackson currently serves as President of the Virginia Chess Federation. VCF members elected him in August 2025 for a one-year presidential term. Jackson is also an experienced tournament director and organizer. The federation’s board works with specialist volunteers responsible for membership, scholastic chess, finance, women’s chess, publications, tournament administration, and other statewide programs.

🏆 State Championships and Tournament Program

Virginia Chess Federation holds exclusive authority to authorize official Virginia state chess championships. Its principal adult championship is the Virginia Closed Chess Championship, traditionally held over Labor Day weekend.

The 2026 competition is the 87th Virginia Closed Championship, scheduled for September 5–7 in Glen Allen. Championship and Amateur sections require Virginia residency, while a Novice section provides another competitive pathway. In addition, the federation schedules a blitz tournament before the main championship.

VCF also organizes the Virginia Open and Virginia Senior Championship program. The 58th Virginia Open took place in January 2026 in Dulles. Meanwhile, the 2026 Virginia Senior & Adults Open ran from May 29–31 in Fredericksburg and included FIDE-rated senior competition.

The federation also maintains a statewide tournament clearinghouse. Therefore, players can use the VCF website to find open, scholastic, FIDE-rated, rapid, blitz, and club competitions throughout Virginia and the wider Maryland–DC–Virginia region.

🧒 Scholastic and College Chess

Scholastic chess forms a major part of VCF’s mission. The federation sanctions the Virginia Scholastic and College Chess Championships and works with schools and local organizers to deliver the event.

For 2026, VCF partnered with Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria. The championship weekend included the main scholastic and college competitions as well as Friday evening side events.

The federation also supports school chess beyond its state championship. Its nonprofit mission specifically includes teaching chess, supporting junior tournaments, and donating chess equipment to schools and similar organizations.

Moreover, VCF helps leading young players represent Virginia nationally. Its support programs have provided financial assistance to state champions competing in national invitational tournaments held alongside the U.S. Open. Consequently, success at Virginia championships can lead directly to national representative opportunities.

🏅 VCF Cup and Statewide Competitive Development

The VCF Cup connects selected tournaments across Virginia into a season-long competition. The series began with the 2010–11 season and rewards both performance and participation.

The 2025–26 VCF Cup includes 11 tournaments. Events include the Zofchak Memorial, Skyline Open, Fredericksburg Open, Northern Virginia Open, Piedmont Open, Virginia Open, Colonial Open, Central Virginia Open, Coastal Virginia Open, Cherry Blossom Classic, and Shenandoah Open.

Importantly, VCF does not directly organize every Cup tournament. Independent Virginia organizers run several events, while the federation manages the Cup structure and awards. Therefore, the program links different tournament organizations into a broader statewide circuit.

VCF also supports representative chess. Eligible Virginia champions can advance to national state-champion invitationals, including events for seniors, girls, and scholastic age groups.

📰 Virginia Chess and Statewide Resources

The federation publishes Virginia Chess, its official newsletter. The publication covers Virginia tournaments, annotated games, state chess news, historical material, book reviews, and upcoming events.

FM Macon Shibut, a three-time Virginia State Champion and chess author, serves as editor. Moreover, the federation maintains an online newsletter archive extending from 1998 through current 2026 issues.

VCF also maintains directories of chess clubs around the Commonwealth. These resources help players locate regular chess activity in communities such as Richmond, Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, Fredericksburg, and the Shenandoah Valley.

In addition, the federation preserves extensive records of Virginia state champions and tournament history. Its historical archive documents organized statewide chess dating back to the nineteenth century and the creation of VCF in 1934.

🤝 Educational and Community Support

Virginia Chess Federation’s formal mission extends beyond tournament organization. The federation promotes chess as an educational activity and encourages study of the game among people of all ages.

Its bylaws specifically provide for chess instruction and the donation of equipment to schools, colleges, hospitals, military installations, community centers, and similar institutions. Moreover, VCF has used donations to support school chess programs and Virginia representatives at national competitions.

The federation also has a long connection with U.S. military chess. Its mission specifically includes supporting tournaments for members of the United States Armed Forces.

Through these programs, VCF connects individual players, clubs, schools, tournament organizers, volunteers, and national chess institutions within one statewide organization.
