SK Turm Bad Hersfeld e.V. is a chess club based in Bad Hersfeld, Hesse, Germany. Its official legal name is Schachklub Turm Bad Hersfeld e.V. The club combines league chess, open tournaments, youth development, school chess, structured training, and regular club evenings. Its current clubroom is at Altes Brauhaus, Kirchplatz 9, 36251 Bad Hersfeld.
Organized club chess in Bad Hersfeld dates to February 25, 1937. Eleven chess enthusiasts met at Café Bolender and founded the original Schachklub Bad Hersfeld. The club later joined the chess department of SG Hessen Hersfeld, which carried the local chess tradition from 1981 until 2004. After that period, the chess players again established an independent organization under the current SK Turm Bad Hersfeld identity. Therefore, the club combines a long local chess history with an independent modern structure.
Markus Schmidt currently serves as First Chairman. The 2026 board also includes Paul Keßler as Second Chairman, Wolfgang Frank as Treasurer, Wolf Hajo Baschin-Iber as Tournament Director, Denis Kapustjan as Secretary, and Eckhard Krauße as Youth Director. Meanwhile, additional teams compete at regional and district levels. This multi-team structure allows players of different strengths to gain regular league experience. In addition, SK Turm enters teams in regional cup competitions.
The club’s competitive history extends much further back. Bad Hersfeld won regional league and blitz titles during earlier decades, while club players have also competed successfully at state and German championship level. Therefore, organized team chess remains a continuous link between the club’s historical and current activities.
🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development
Youth development has expanded significantly at SK Turm Bad Hersfeld. The club provides chess opportunities for beginners, developing juniors, stronger young competitors, and adults.
In 2026, the club entered three teams with 12 young players in the Hessian Youth Team Championships from U12 to U16. By comparison, it had only four available junior players for the corresponding competition in 2025. This growth reflects the club’s increasing investment in structured youth chess.
SK Turm also offers weekly advanced training on Fridays from 18:30 to 20:00. The program targets juniors and adults from approximately 1400 DWZ upward. Training covers openings, middlegames, tactics, analysis, and endgames. Afterwards, members often continue with an informal club evening.
In addition, the club runs introductory and development courses for younger children. Its 2026 beginner program for children aged five to eight covers piece movement, checkmate, basic openings, tactical motifs, and elementary endgames.
