♟️ About SK Turm Bad Hersfeld e.V.

SK Turm Bad Hersfeld e.V. is a chess club based in Bad Hersfeld, Hesse, Germany. Its official legal name is Schachklub Turm Bad Hersfeld e.V. The club combines league chess, open tournaments, youth development, school chess, structured training, and regular club evenings. Its current clubroom is at Altes Brauhaus, Kirchplatz 9, 36251 Bad Hersfeld. Organized club chess in Bad Hersfeld dates to February 25, 1937. Eleven chess enthusiasts met at Café Bolender and founded the original Schachklub Bad Hersfeld. The club later joined the chess department of SG Hessen Hersfeld, which carried the local chess tradition from 1981 until 2004. After that period, the chess players again established an independent organization under the current SK Turm Bad Hersfeld identity. Therefore, the club combines a long local chess history with an independent modern structure. Markus Schmidt currently serves as First Chairman. The 2026 board also includes Paul Keßler as Second Chairman, Wolfgang Frank as Treasurer, Wolf Hajo Baschin-Iber as Tournament Director, Denis Kapustjan as Secretary, and Eckhard Krauße as Youth Director. Together, the board manages the club’s competitive program, tournaments, administration, and expanding youth activities.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

SK Turm Bad Hersfeld organizes several recurring tournaments during the year. Its current program includes the Mückenstürmer Blitz, Lolls-Rapid, Nikolausturnier, and the traditional Bad Hersfelder Adventspokal. The Lolls-Rapid is one of the club’s newest tournament series. SK Turm launched the competition in 2025 before Bad Hersfeld’s traditional Lullusfest. The first edition attracted 60 players, including titled competitors and numerous juniors. Philipp Mester won the inaugural tournament ahead of FM Christian Aepfler. The club schedules the 2. Lolls-Rapid for October 10, 2026, at Bürgerhaus Sorga in Bad Hersfeld. This edition expands to nine Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move. Moreover, the tournament receives FIDE Rapid rating. FIDE lists Wolf Hajo Baschin-Iber as Chief Organizer and Eckhard Krauße as Chief Arbiter. Another recurring competition is the Bad Hersfelder Adventspokal, which the club has organized since 2012. The event uses an unusual handicap system that gives additional thinking time to the lower-rated player. Consequently, the club’s tournament program combines conventional rated events with formats designed for broad participation.

♜ Team Chess and League Competition

Team chess forms a central part of club activity. SK Turm Bad Hersfeld fields several adult teams and also maintains a women’s team. The first team enjoyed a particularly successful 2025/26 season. After a close campaign in the Landesklasse Nord, Bad Hersfeld finished as champion and earned promotion to the Verbandsliga Nord. The club secured the promotion after a season that included several narrow 4½–3½ victories and a decisive competitive battle with Korbach. Meanwhile, additional teams compete at regional and district levels. This multi-team structure allows players of different strengths to gain regular league experience. In addition, SK Turm enters teams in regional cup competitions. The club’s competitive history extends much further back. Bad Hersfeld won regional league and blitz titles during earlier decades, while club players have also competed successfully at state and German championship level. Therefore, organized team chess remains a continuous link between the club’s historical and current activities.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth development has expanded significantly at SK Turm Bad Hersfeld. The club provides chess opportunities for beginners, developing juniors, stronger young competitors, and adults. In 2026, the club entered three teams with 12 young players in the Hessian Youth Team Championships from U12 to U16. By comparison, it had only four available junior players for the corresponding competition in 2025. This growth reflects the club’s increasing investment in structured youth chess. SK Turm also offers weekly advanced training on Fridays from 18:30 to 20:00. The program targets juniors and adults from approximately 1400 DWZ upward. Training covers openings, middlegames, tactics, analysis, and endgames. Afterwards, members often continue with an informal club evening. In addition, the club runs introductory and development courses for younger children. Its 2026 beginner program for children aged five to eight covers piece movement, checkmate, basic openings, tactical motifs, and elementary endgames. Small group sizes allow instructors to work closely with participants.

🧒 School Chess and Community Development

SK Turm Bad Hersfeld supports school chess across the Bad Hersfeld area. Its current school chess network includes activities connected with Wilhelm-Neuhaus-Schule, Konrad-Duden-Schule, Gesamtschule Obersberg, Kolibri-Schule Asbach, and Ernst-von-Harnack-Schule. The club also organizes the Nikolausturnier for primary-school children. It runs the competition together with the support group for school chess at Wilhelm-Neuhaus-Schule. The tournament gives young players an opportunity to move from school chess activities into organized competition. Moreover, the club provides a regular social environment for adult members. Its monthly club evening follows the advanced training session and includes thematic blitz tournaments, game preparation, analysis, casual chess, and social activities. As a result, SK Turm Bad Hersfeld connects school programs, beginner instruction, advanced training, competitive teams, and open tournaments within one local chess structure.
