♟️ About A.S.D. Veloce Club

A.S.D. Veloce Club is a historic multi-sport association based in Pinerolo, Piedmont, Italy. Founded on April 3, 1894, the organization currently supports chess alongside bocce, pétanque, cards, billiards, dance, and other social activities. Its chess section, Veloce Club Scacchi, is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) under ID 12057 and operates from the association’s long-standing headquarters at Piazza Santa Croce 3.

The Veloce Club originally developed around cycling. Seventeen Piedmontese founders created the association in 1894, with lawyer Amedeo Brignone as its first president. The club later expanded into fencing, shooting, wrestling, and bocce. Chess activity appeared within Veloce Club during the 1980s. However, the modern chess section formally joined the FSI in January 2009, restoring an official federated chess presence in Pinerolo after a long interruption.

Giorgio Reusa currently serves as President and legal representative of A.S.D. Veloce Club. The FSI’s 2026 register also lists Elvio Barral and Giorgio Bruno on the current council. Meanwhile, Paolo Prigione serves as the responsible official for Veloce Club Scacchi and handles much of the chess section’s tournament, school, and registration activity. Therefore, Prigione is the most useful operational contact for players, while Reusa remains the association’s current President.

🏛️ Chess History and Competitive Development

The modern Veloce Club chess section began its FSI activity in 2009 with an immediate focus on competition and youth development. During its first federated season, the club entered the Italian Team Championship, qualified young players for national junior events, and supported school teams in the Giochi Sportivi Studenteschi.

Progress continued rapidly. In 2010, the club won its Piedmont Promozione group and achieved strong results in school and U16 competitions. Later, the first team reached Serie B after earning promotion from Serie C in 2013.

The club has experienced both promotions and relegations since then. Nevertheless, team chess has remained part of its competitive identity. More importantly, Veloce Club has built a large internal playing program that gives members regular opportunities to compete throughout the season.

The current chess section remains active and substantial. In August 2026, the club listed 48 registered chess players. In addition, the national sports register records both competitive and recreational chess membership under Veloce Club’s FSI affiliation.

🎓 Chess School and Youth Development

Youth chess forms one of Veloce Club Scacchi’s principal activities. The association runs structured chess instruction at its Pinerolo headquarters and has worked extensively with local schools.

Its Scacchi a Scuola program introduces primary and middle-school pupils to chess through classroom sessions. The club supplies the necessary chess equipment and works with teachers before organizing final school tournaments. Moreover, selected pupils can receive FSI registration and continue their development through the club.

By 2025, Veloce Club reported that its school chess projects had reached hundreds of pupils in Pinerolo. The association had also expanded its weekly training schedule to five courses spread across three days. Beginner, intermediate, and stronger players therefore receive different opportunities for continued development.

Paolo Prigione serves as the responsible official for Veloce Club Scacchi’s school program. His work links school instruction with the club’s wider tournament calendar.

Young players can subsequently progress into official rapid, classical, and junior tournaments. In addition, the annual November Festival includes age-group competitions that can qualify eligible players for the Italian Youth Championship Final.

🏆 Rapid, Blitz and Classical Tournament Program

Veloce Club Scacchi organizes an unusually dense tournament calendar at its Piazza Santa Croce headquarters. The program includes classical FIDE-rated tournaments, rapid competitions, blitz events, internal championships, and promotional tournaments.

The club’s Rapid Veloce Club series has become particularly well established. In March 2026, the association organized the 99th Rapid CRP Veloce Club, which formed part of the Piedmont Rapid Play circuit. The series then reached a major milestone with the 100th Rapid Veloce Club on April 17, 2026.

The program continues throughout the year. The FSI calendar lists the 101st Rapid for September, the 102nd Rapid for October, and the 103rd Rapid for December 2026. In addition, Veloce Club organized an official FIDE Blitz competition in May.

Classical chess also remains part of the program. The Campionato Veloce Club 2026 ran over six weekly rounds from January to February with a 90+30 time control.

This combination creates regular competition without requiring members to travel to Turin or other larger chess centers. At the same time, outside players regularly travel to Pinerolo for the club’s FIDE-rated events.

🌟 Festival Veloce Club Pinerolo

The annual Festival Veloce Club Pinerolo is the chess section’s principal classical weekend tournament. Earlier editions operated under the Città di Pinerolo name, while the modern competition combines an Open with dedicated junior championships.

A.S.D. Veloce Club organizes the 14° Festival “Veloce Club Pinerolo” from November 20–22, 2026 at its own headquarters in Piazza Santa Croce 3.

The 2026 festival consists of an Open Integrale plus 12 Under-18 categories, divided by age and gender from U8 through U18. The organizers may merge junior groups when participation requires it. In addition, eligible junior players can qualify for the 2027 Italian Youth Championship Final.

All competitions use a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The festival runs over five rounds and counts for Standard Elo under FSI/FIDE regulations.

The Open carries a published €500 prize fund, while the junior sections award trophies and qualification recognition. The organizers cap total participation at 50 players across the festival.

Paolo Prigione handles the tournament’s operational communication through the chess section’s dedicated telephone number. The tournament therefore belongs directly to A.S.D. Veloce Club and its chess section rather than to the City of Pinerolo or another external organizing committee.

🤝 Community Chess in Pinerolo

Veloce Club’s role extends beyond federation competition. Its Piazza Santa Croce facility functions as a community sports and social center where members can play chess alongside the association’s other activities.

The City of Pinerolo recognizes Veloce Club as one of the city’s active sports associations and lists chess among the activities available at the facility. Moreover, the municipality works with the association on public sporting events.

For example, Veloce Club organizes Scacchi in Fiera during the annual Fiera di San Donato. The free amateur tournament welcomes players of different strengths and brings chess into a wider municipal event.

Regular club chess normally takes place on Friday evenings, while courses and additional activities run on other days. Consequently, the association combines formal FSI competition with accessible community play, school chess, and introductory activities.
