♟️ About Kazakhstan Chess Federation

The Kazakhstan Chess Federation (KazChess) is the national governing body for chess in Kazakhstan. Established in 1992 following the country’s independence, the federation coordinates national championships, national teams, regional branches, youth development, ratings, arbiters, coaches, tournament organization, and Kazakhstan’s representation within FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation. Its headquarters are currently located in Astana.

KazChess operates an extensive national competition and development system covering classical, rapid, blitz, youth, school, university, women’s, team, and amateur chess. The federation also runs the Kazakhstan Cup circuit, supports elite national-team players and promising juniors, and maintains branches throughout the country. Its Chess in Education program has expanded to more than 1,500 schools and 60,000 students, alongside teacher training and university-level initiatives for future chess educators.

Timur Turlov has served as President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation since 2023, while WGM Gulmira Dauletova is the current Executive Director and the most practical primary administrative contact. During 2026, KazChess has organized the national championship, international school and university team competitions, the inaugural Turkic Nations team events, Kazakhstan Cup tournaments, and major educational projects. It also continues the international Freedom Asian Chess Initiatives (FACI) program in partnership with FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation.

📜 History and Development

The Kazakhstan Chess Federation was established in 1992, with poet, writer, and public figure Olzhas Suleimenov serving as its first head. That same year, independent Kazakhstan made its Chess Olympiad debut in Manila with both Open and Women’s national teams. Since then, the federation has developed a nationwide competition structure and an increasingly extensive network of regional branches. By 2025, KazChess reported operational branches in all 17 regions and the three cities of republican significance.

Kazakhstan has also hosted a growing number of major international competitions. Recent examples include the 2022 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Almaty, the 2023 World Championship Match in Astana, the 2025 FIDE World Cadet Championships in Almaty, and several international team and educational events.

🏆 National Championships and Kazakhstan Cup

The 2026 Kazakhstan Individual Championship took place in Astana from May 2–12. Both the Open and Women’s competitions were 14-player round robins and also contributed to national-team selection for the 2026 Chess Olympiad. IM Sauat Nurgaliyev, aged 15, won his first national Open title with 9/13. In the Women’s Championship, WIM Zarina Nurgaliyeva, aged 16, also captured her first senior national title.

KazChess additionally operates the Kazakhstan Cup, whose stages are international classical open tournaments. The 2026 program included the Aktobe Open – Vladimir Dvorkovich Memorial from June 2–12. Further Cup events form part of the year’s national calendar, including the Atyrau Open, scheduled for October 11–21. The federation also supports national-team members through a structured grant program. Its published 2026 program provides financial support for leading Open and Women’s national-team players as they prepare for the Chess Olympiad and other major international championships.

🎓 Chess in Education and Youth Development

The Chess in Education program is one of KazChess’s largest development projects. By 2026, it had expanded beyond its original national target to reach more than 1,500 schools and around 60,000 children. Thousands of primary-school teachers have received chess training, while pedagogical universities have begun introducing specialist study programs connected with chess education. KazChess has also helped establish KazChessLab facilities that combine teacher training, educational research, and development of new chess-teaching methodologies.

Competitive youth chess complements these educational programs. National championships determine representatives for World and Asian age-group events, while a dedicated Young Talents Support Program provides selected juniors with coaching, training camps, international tournament opportunities, and financial assistance.

🌍 International Events and Cooperation

Kazakhstan hosted the Asian Continental Stage of the World Schools Team Championship 2026 in Almaty from April 7–10. The competition brought together 114 players from 19 countries and formed part of FIDE and the International School Chess Federation’s Year of Chess in Education program. In May, Astana hosted the inaugural Turkic Open and Women’s Team Chess Championships and the Turkic Youth U16 Chess Olympiad. Kazakhstan assumed a central role in the newly developed cooperation among chess federations of Turkic countries during 2026.

Another major project was the FIDE World University Team Chess Championship, whose over-the-board final took place in Almaty in August 2026. Sixteen university teams qualified or received invitations for the final stage, with teams required to field both male and female players. Beyond Kazakhstan, KazChess manages the Freedom Asian Chess Initiatives (FACI) program with Freedom Holding Corp., FIDE, and the Asian Chess Federation. The 2026 participants are Cambodia, Japan, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan. The initiative supports federation development, coaching, training camps, education, and international participation.
