The 3rd International Chess Tournament Santa Lucia di Piave 2027 takes place from January 15–17, 2027, in Santa Lucia di Piave, Veneto, Italy. ASD Queen Club organizes the international classical weekend at Casa degli Alpini, a community venue in the province of Treviso. The event welcomes competitors to three separate Open A, Open B and Open C sections, each offering five FIDE-rated games over three days.

All three groups use Swiss pairings and 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move from move one. The event counts toward FIDE Standard ratings, with rating limits that let players enter an appropriate strength category. Moreover, the 2027 organizer’s regulations list a total of €2,750 in prizes (approximately $3,060), covering overall standings, rating categories, junior awards and a women’s award in Open C.

The first round starts at 4:30 PM on Friday, January 15, followed by two games on Saturday and two on Sunday. Registration closes on January 11, and the playing hall has a maximum capacity of 110 participants. In addition, every competitor must confirm attendance by 3:45 PM on Friday, either at the venue or through the tournament’s published WhatsApp contact. The organizer also recommends a local hotel and offers advance-arranged transfers from nearby railway stations.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

All three groups use five Swiss-system rounds with 90 minutes per player for the entire game plus a 30-second increment from move one. Consequently, competitors have a classical playing schedule rather than a rapid tournament, despite the compact three-day format. The organizer runs each section separately, and all competitions count toward the international FIDE rating list.

The tournament’s official tie-break sequence begins with direct encounter (REP), followed by Buchholz Cut-1, Sonneborn–Berger and APRO. Moreover, players have a default time of 60 minutes after the published starting time of a round. Participants must comply with the FIDE Laws of Chess and the Italian Chess Federation’s tournament regulations.

Half-Point Bye Rules

A player may request one half-point bye during Rounds 1–3. The organizer requires this request in writing before publishing the first-round pairings, and it cannot be withdrawn after submission. Therefore, competitors should send any planned absence to torneiqueenclub@gmail.com in advance. The rules do not offer the same half-point arrangement for the final two rounds.

Player Eligibility and Rating

Italian participants and foreign residents of Italy need the relevant current federation membership before the tournament begins. In addition, visiting foreign players must hold a valid FIDE Identification Number (FIN). Players whose Italian membership is still being processed should follow the documentation requirements in the regulations, while those who need to join may arrange membership through the organizing club as described in the invitation.

🏆 Prize Fund

The 2027 regulations advertise €2,750 in cash prizes. The full published list adds up to €1,110 for Open A, €910 for Open B and €730 for Open C. Therefore, the combined prize fund is approximately $3,060, using an indicative conversion of €1 = US$1.113. Prizes are paid in euros by bank transfer and are subject to the applicable Italian withholding rules.

Each player may receive only one monetary award: the organizer applies the highest prize for which the competitor qualifies. Moreover, winners need their Italian tax identification information and must complete the payment form at the prize ceremony. Parents or guardians sign the required form for minor prize recipients. Accordingly, the award conditions are important for both Italian and international entrants.

The organizer reserves the right to apply the current fiscal rules when paying monetary prizes. In addition, the prize structure recognizes younger players and rating categories alongside the overall leaders. Because the official list specifies separate awards across all three groups, players should review the appropriate section rather than assume that every supplementary category applies to their own Open.

♟️ Sections / Groups

The tournament offers three parallel classical Opens, each using independent Swiss pairings. Open A targets stronger competitors above 1950 Elo, Open B spans the overlapping range from 1750 through 2000, and Open C welcomes those below 1750. Consequently, some entrants near the boundary can qualify for more than one advertised group, subject to the organizers’ section-allocation rules.

Section Rating Range and Prize
🏆 Open A Above 1950 Elo; €300 first prize + trophy
♟️ Open B 1750–2000 Elo; €250 first prize + trophy
♟️ Open C Below 1750 Elo; €200 first prize + trophy

Open A — Stronger Classical Field

Open A gives higher-rated players five internationally rated classical games and the tournament’s largest first prize. Furthermore, the group awards four overall cash positions, rating recognition below 2050 Elo and junior distinctions. The playing schedule matches the other two Opens, making it possible for participants from different groups to travel and stay together.

Open B — Intermediate Competition

Open B caters to competitors in the 1750–2000 rating band. Its overall winner receives €250 and a trophy, while other prizes reward places two through four and selected youth and rating achievements. Moreover, the group uses the same full-length 90+30 games as Open A, giving club players an opportunity to build their international rating through a weekend tournament.

Open C — Developing Players

Open C admits players below 1750 Elo and offers €200 for first overall, together with a trophy. The published additional prizes include recognition for a female competitor, players below 1600 Elo and younger age groups. Therefore, this section offers a range of competitive goals for developing players beyond the leading general standings.

📅 Schedule

The event runs on January 15, 16 and 17, 2027, in Central European Time (CET, UTC+1). Friday begins with attendance confirmation by 3:45 PM, followed by Round 1 at 4:30 PM. Saturday and Sunday each contain two games. In addition, the organizers ask every entrant, including those who preregistered, to complete attendance confirmation before the first-round cutoff.

Date & Time (CET) Tournament Activity
Friday, Jan 15 · By 3:45 PM Mandatory attendance confirmation
Friday, Jan 15 · 4:30 PM Round 1
Saturday, Jan 16 · 9:00 AM Round 2
Saturday, Jan 16 · 2:30 PM Round 3
Sunday, Jan 17 · 9:00 AM Round 4
Sunday, Jan 17 · 2:30 PM Round 5

Because the first game starts late on Friday, arriving players should allow time to reach the venue before completing attendance verification. Furthermore, both Saturday and Sunday involve two full-length classical games, so participants should plan meals and rest breaks accordingly. Those missing the required Friday confirmation may only enter the competition from Round 2 under the organizer’s rules.

Registration Confirmation

The organizers confirm participation when they receive the required bank transfer. Accordingly, entrants should follow the payment reference instructions in the original invitation and ensure that the payment identifies their name and selected section. The tournament does not accept new on-site entries, even though it requires already-registered players to confirm attendance on January 15.

Friday Attendance

Every participant must confirm attendance before 3:45 PM on Friday, January 15, either at Casa degli Alpini or by WhatsApp to +39 340 524 2388. Late arrivals may enter from Round 2 according to the official competition conditions.

📍 Venue

The playing venue is Casa degli Alpini, Via Foresto Est 12, 31025 Santa Lucia di Piave, Treviso, Veneto, Italy. The Casa degli Alpini hosts all three Opens in an indoor space with a published capacity of 110 participants. The official brochure confirms the street address and identifies a nearby school as an additional parking option. Thus, competitors should navigate to Via Foresto Est 12 rather than a venue in the similarly named municipality of Santa Maria di Sala.

An adjacent building provides an analysis and waiting area for accompanying visitors. In addition, the tournament permits parking inside the grounds or opposite the venue near the middle school. Players should respect the organizers’ directions for the playing room and analysis area, especially during active rounds when quiet and fair-play conditions matter.

🏨 Accommodation

The organizers recommend Hotel Ristorante Pizzeria Calinferno in nearby Cimetta di Codognè, a short road journey from Santa Lucia di Piave. The 2027 invitation quotes room prices for single occupancy, double-use-as-single and ordinary double/twin rooms. Moreover, guests can contact the hotel directly to discuss availability and any requirements for tournament dates.

Room availability depends on the hotel’s current booking conditions, and accommodation is separate from the chess entry fee. Consequently, players traveling with companions should confirm the appropriate room type before reserving. The venue’s own waiting space can also be useful for companions between rounds.

🚆 How to Get There

By Rail

Conegliano railway station lies approximately six kilometers from the playing venue, according to the organizer. It provides a connection point for regional and longer-distance trains. Furthermore, the tournament team can arrange a transfer from Conegliano or Ponte della Priula railway stations when participants make arrangements in advance. Visitors should contact the organizer before assuming that a shuttle will be available on arrival.

By Car

Drivers can approach through the A28 motorway, Conegliano exit, and continue toward Santa Lucia di Piave. The full address of Casa degli Alpini is Via Foresto Est 12. In addition, the organizer describes parking inside the venue’s grounds or opposite at the middle school. Those entering Friday’s first round should allow extra time to find a space before the 3:45 PM attendance cutoff.

By Air

The official invitation places Treviso Airport about 25 kilometers away and Venice Airport roughly 50 kilometers from the playing venue. Therefore, international travelers can compare flights into either airport and arrange an onward road or rail transfer. Flight schedules and local transport connections should be checked against the Friday afternoon registration requirement.

ℹ️ Other Information

Fair Play and Chess Equipment

All participants must follow FIDE and Italian Chess Federation rules. In particular, the event allows electronic communication devices inside the playing area only when players switch them off completely and keep them inside a bag away from their person. The rules also specify a maximum 60-minute late arrival period after each round starts. Players should respect all instructions from the tournament arbiters.

Official Tournament Resources

For the 2027 edition, players can consult the original regulations for participation, prizes, hotel arrangements, pairing rules and contact information. In addition, the Veneto regional chess calendar confirms the dates, and the Italian Chess Federation lists the event as a five-round FIDE-rated tournament. Participants should use the latest organizer instructions for travel and registration rather than relying on an earlier edition.

About ASD Queen Club

ASD Queen Club – Circolo Scacchistico di Conegliano is an Italian chess association based in Conegliano, in the province of Treviso, Veneto. The organization combines competitive chess, youth education, school programs, international tournament organization, and recreational activities. Affiliated with the Italian Chess Federation (Federazione Scacchistica Italiana, FSI), Queen Club serves players of different ages and abilities throughout Conegliano and the surrounding communities.

The association traces its present structure to the integration of two established chess initiatives: the historic Circolo Scacchistico di Conegliano, which focused on adult chess, and Queen Club, which began developing youth chess in 2013. Since 2021, the unified organization has brought these traditions together, combining organized competition with structured training for children, teenagers, university students, and adults.

Queen Club is also a founding partner of the Queen Club MITROPA Chess Academy, an international chess education initiative led by Woman Grandmaster and FIDE Trainer Aleksandra Dimitrijević. Its broader activities include FIDE-rated tournaments, youth championships, school chess projects, and community events across the Veneto region.

History & Development

Queen Club's development reflects the growth of organized chess in Conegliano over several generations. The historic Circolo Scacchistico di Conegliano provided a meeting place for adults interested in competitive and recreational chess, while the Queen Club youth initiative began in 2013 with a strong educational focus. These two organizations brought complementary experience to the local chess community.

On February 22, 2021, the association began operating under its new legal identity as ASD Queen Club – Circolo Scacchistico di Conegliano. Its formal registration with Italy's national sports association register followed on May 14, 2021. The reorganization allowed the club to integrate adult competition, junior training, school partnerships, and tournament management within a single association.

Under its expanded structure, Queen Club developed a program that extends beyond ordinary club meetings. It collaborates with schools, libraries, municipalities, and sports organizations, while its competitive members participate in Italian team championships and individual tournaments. By October 2026, the Italian National Olympic Committee's sports register recorded 122 competitive members and seven recreational members affiliated with the organization, together with 27 sporting events for the 2026 sporting year.

Competitive Chess & Team Achievements

Queen Club participates in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS), Italy's national team championship system. The association achieved a significant milestone in May 2023 when its team secured promotion to Serie B during the championship gathering in Campalto, near Venice. The promotion demonstrated the club's progress in competitive team chess and provided opportunities to face stronger opposition in subsequent seasons.

The club's competitive history also includes individual achievements by its players and instructors. Ivanche Pentelashoski finished second overall at the June 2022 chess festival in Villorba, while Giovanni Dalla Palma recorded several strong tournament performances, including a victory at the 2012 Autunno Scacchistico Veneziano. Enrico Ridolfo won the 2021 International La Birreria Pedavena tournament and finished runner-up in the 2019 Italian Candidate Master category championship.

Francesco Feltrin, who also contributes to the club's educational activities, won the 2018 Scacchistica Pordenonese Weekend Festival and recorded tournament victories in 2016. These results illustrate the association's combination of competitive playing experience and practical chess instruction.

Junior Chess & Education

Youth chess is one of Queen Club's principal activities. The organization's educational tradition dates to 2013, when Queen Club began offering structured chess activities for younger players. Today, its instruction covers beginners, developing juniors, and more experienced competitors, with both in-person and online courses available.

The club's instructional team includes Aleksandra Dimitrijević, Ivanche Pentelashoski, Francesco Feltrin, Giovanni Dalla Palma, Vincenzo Ugrote, Dante Tomio, Federico Cortina, and other qualified instructors. Lessons introduce chess fundamentals before progressing to tactical exercises, strategic planning, calculation, and competitive preparation. Through this combination of classroom instruction and practical tournament play, students can develop their skills while gaining experience against players from other clubs.

Queen Club also helps young competitors participate in regional and national championships. In 2024, nine of its juniors attended the Italian National Youth Championship finals in Salsomaggiore Terme. Earlier achievements included strong performances in the Veneto regional youth competitions and the Italian Under-16 Team Championship, where the club's team finished second in the regional phase in 2018 and first in 2019, qualifying for the national finals in Arco.

School Chess & Educational Partnerships

Queen Club maintains an extensive network of partnerships with educational institutions across the province of Treviso. Its collaborators include schools and municipalities in Conegliano, Susegana, San Fior, Santa Lucia di Piave, Pieve di Soligo, Vazzola, Codognè, and neighboring communities. These relationships support chess lessons, school competitions, introductory activities, and opportunities for students to participate in regional tournaments.

The club's school chess records document notable achievements by educational institutions in Conegliano. Liceo Marconi won provincial and regional junior team titles in 2018 and 2019, finishing third at the 2019 national Trofeo Scacchi Scuola finals in Policoro. The school's earlier results included fourth place nationally in 2014 and first place at the 2017 Inter-European School Chess competition in Chioggia.

Other schools associated with the local chess program have also achieved strong results. In 2022, the girls' team from Scuola Brustolon won its regional online school championship, while the Brustolon lower-secondary team secured another regional title and qualified for the national finals. Queen Club's educational partnerships provide an important connection between classroom chess, extracurricular learning, and organized competitive opportunities.

Queen Club MITROPA Chess Academy

The Queen Club MITROPA Chess Academy represents an important international dimension of the association's educational activities. The academy operates as a joint initiative between ASD Queen Club of Conegliano and the Austrian MITROPA Chess Association, bringing together expertise from Italy and Austria. It functions as their shared chess education program rather than as a separate legal association.

The academy operates under the framework of the FIDE Trainers' Commission and is directed by WGM Aleksandra Dimitrijević, an experienced international player, trainer, and International Arbiter. Her background includes chess coaching, international competition, and leadership in educational initiatives. The academy provides a connection between local chess instruction and international training expertise, while supporting the development of competitive players.

The collaboration also contributes to events that extend beyond ordinary tournament competition. Through educational projects and international partnerships, Queen Club and MITROPA connect chess training with broader sporting and cultural activities.

Women's Chess & International Initiatives

Queen Club has contributed to initiatives promoting women's participation and leadership in chess. A particularly important event took place in Conegliano on August 30–31, 2025, when the Queen Club MITROPA Chess Academy joined the Italian Chess Federation and the Veneto Chess Committee in organizing Power Moves: Women Shaping Chess. The event formed part of FIDE's worldwide Women's Chess Marathon during the 2025 Year of Social Chess.

The two-day program took place at Campus San Francesco. Its first day featured a FIDE-rated mixed-team blitz competition pairing girls and boys, followed by a conference and masterclass on the role of women in chess. Speakers included WGM Aleksandra Dimitrijević, International Arbiter Franca Dapiran, FIDE Commission for Women's Chess Chair Anastasia Sorokina, and Italian Chess Federation Vice President Veronika Goi.

The program examined chess education, female leadership, equal opportunities, and the importance of role models for young players. FIDE representatives presented certificates of appreciation to members of the organizing team, including Queen Club President Claudine Rosolen and Aleksandra Dimitrijević, recognizing their contributions to the event.

Club Tournaments & Community Activities

Queen Club organizes regular recreational and competitive activities for its members. Its program includes thematic chess tournaments, rapid competitions, team-based formats, introductory events, and open playing sessions. During the 2025–2026 season, the association also organized Monday evening thematic tournaments and quadriglia-style chess activities, offering alternative formats alongside traditional competitive play. The club's broader tournament program includes the Scacchi Stellari circuit and events connected with the Veneto Grand Prix. These activities encourage participation by both experienced players and newcomers, while providing opportunities for children and adults to compete in an organized setting.

In September 2026, Queen Club participated in Conegliano's Festa dello Sport, organizing an open chess tournament and a simultaneous exhibition with Aleksandra Dimitrijević. The club also resumed Saturday afternoon recreational chess sessions in Conegliano, combining supervised games with opportunities to learn from experienced instructors.

International Chess Tournament Santa Lucia di Piave

The International Chess Tournament Santa Lucia di Piave is one of the international classical chess competitions associated with ASD Queen Club. The event takes place in Santa Lucia di Piave, in the province of Treviso, and brings together players seeking FIDE-rated competition in a compact weekend format. The second edition ran from January 16–18, 2026, at Casa degli Alpini, Via Foresto Est 12. The competition featured three rating sections, Open A, Open B, and Open C, with five rounds of classical chess. Queen Club managed tournament organization, registration, and participant communication, with Aleksandra Dimitrijević serving as a tournament contact.

The third edition will take place January 15–17, 2027, continuing the three-section structure. Players will compete over five rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The event carries FIDE and Italian national rating recognition and offers competitive opportunities to players across different rating categories. The tournament contributes to Queen Club's wider program of organizing official chess competitions in Veneto, complementing its educational activities, local competitions, and international collaborations.
