A.S.D. Scacchi Golfo Paradiso “Giancarlo Musso” is a historic chess club based in Camogli, Liguria, Italy. The organization was founded on May 14, 1975 as Circolo Scacchistico Rutese and later adopted its current name in November 2016. The club is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) and represents the Golfo Paradiso area around Camogli and Recco in regional and national chess competition.

The club organizes FIDE-rated Classical, Rapid, Blitz, youth, and team events. Its current tournament calendar includes the Festival della Dragonara in Camogli, the Memorial Giulio Ottolenghi, the Memorial Cesare Valentini, youth championships, and the long-running Città di Recco Weekend Festival. In addition, the club participates actively in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre and supports junior chess through regional qualification events and school-age competition.

Paolo D’Augusta serves as President and is the club’s principal tournament organizer and public contact. Under his leadership, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 and continued expanding its international tournament program. In 2026, the association organized the 3rd Festival della Dragonara, entered two teams in Serie B of the Italian Team Championship, and prepared major autumn events in Camogli and Recco.

📜 History and Giancarlo Musso

The club began in 1975 under the name Circolo Scacchistico Rutese. Its roots were in Ruta, a hillside district of Camogli overlooking the Ligurian coast.

In November 2016, the association adopted the name Scacchi Golfo Paradiso to reflect its broader geographic role across the territory.

At the same time, the club retained the name of Giancarlo Musso, one of its founding members and a promising chess player who died prematurely in 1983.

The name now connects the modern organization with its original generation of members and almost five decades of local chess history.

In 2025, the club marked its 50th anniversary. The milestone also inspired a stronger international tournament program, particularly the expansion of the Festival della Dragonara in Camogli.

🎓 Youth and Community Chess

Youth development remains an important part of the club’s work.

On February 1, 2026, A.S.D. Scacchi Golfo Paradiso organized the 5th Memorial Luigi Croci in Recco. The tournament also served as the Genoa Provincial Youth Championship and a qualification event for the Italian U18 finals.

The program covered age categories from U8 through U18. Competitions received FIDE Rapid rating where applicable and operated within current FSI youth regulations.

The club also promotes chess through local cooperation with the municipalities of Camogli and Recco. These partnerships help provide venues and institutional support for youth and open tournaments.

♜ Italian Team Championship

A.S.D. Scacchi Golfo Paradiso competes regularly in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS).

For the 2026 season, the club qualified two teams for Serie B: Golfo Paradiso and Golfo Paradiso A.

Both teams took part in the Ligurian CIS structure alongside clubs from Genoa and the surrounding region.

The club also helped support the Genoa metropolitan CIS grouping held from March 13–15, 2026.

This team activity provides members with regular long-form competitive chess in addition to the club’s individual tournament calendar.

🌊 Festival della Dragonara

The Festival della Dragonara is the club’s international winter tournament in Camogli.

The third edition took place from February 20–22, 2026 at Hotel Cenobio dei Dogi. The festival offered three parallel FIDE-rated Classical tournaments divided by rating.

All sections used five rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The combined prize fund reached €4,000.

IM Maran Senthil of India won Open A with 4.5/5, finishing ahead of FM Gabriele Lumachi on tie-break. GM Igor Efimov placed third with four points.

Paolo D’Augusta served as the principal organizer, while Giorgio Gugler also supported international player communication.

⚡ Memorial Giulio Ottolenghi

Another long-running club event is the Memorial Giulio Ottolenghi in Camogli.

The 44th edition is scheduled for September 20, 2026 and also serves as the Ligurian Regional Rapid Championship.

The tournament uses nine rounds at 12 minutes plus three seconds per move and receives FIDE Rapid rating.

The published prize fund is €1,200.

This event combines the club’s long tournament tradition with the official regional championship structure.

🌟 Città di Recco Weekend Festival

The Città di Recco Weekend Festival is another flagship event organized by A.S.D. Scacchi Golfo Paradiso.

The XIX edition is scheduled for November 13–15, 2026 in Recco.

The festival consists of three FIDE- and FSI-rated Classical tournaments. Open A is for players rated 1800 and above, Open B covers players below 1900 but at least 1500, and Open C is for players below 1600.

Each section uses five rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.

The organizer has set a combined capacity of 120 players. Registration and tournament communication are handled through Paolo D’Augusta and the club’s official website.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Paolo D’Augusta is the current President of A.S.D. Scacchi Golfo Paradiso “G. Musso”.

He also serves as the club’s main Tournament Organizer and the responsible official for its CIS teams.

D’Augusta manages much of the club’s external communication and international tournament promotion. His contact details appear consistently in FSI listings, regional federation records, Chess-Results, and official tournament regulations.

The club remains formally affiliated with FSI and uses club code 8004 within the Italian federation system.
