56th Festival Città di Torino 2027 – Open A & Open B
The 56th Festival Città di Torino 2027 brings two classical chess opens to Turin, Italy, from January 2–6, 2027. The longstanding local organizer, Società Scacchistica Torinese, will host the festival in its own chess-club premises at Via Goito 13, 10125 Turin. The program combines a seven-round Open A for players rated above 1799 with a six-round Open B for players rated below 1900. Consequently, players can choose a competition that fits their rating and preferred round schedule, subject to the organizer’s entry rules and capacity limits.
The officially published cash prize fund totals €3,600, divided between €2,180 in Open A and €1,420 in Open B. Both sections award overall places as well as selected rating and age-category distinctions; however, prizes cannot be combined by the same recipient. Open A offers €500 for first place, while the Open B champion receives €300. The playing time differs by section: Open A uses 90 minutes for the game plus 30 seconds per move, whereas Open B uses 60 minutes for the game plus the same increment.
For visiting players and accompanying families, the tournament location is particularly convenient because the chess club is near Torino Porta Nuova railway station and Turin’s central districts. Nevertheless, the two sections have different daily round times, including evening games, so entrants should plan meals, accommodation and return travel around their own section rather than the festival dates alone. The Italian Chess Federation has approved and listed the official 2027 prospectus; the information below follows that edition’s regulations, with the published registration rules and practical travel information.

This consolidated festival page covers both official sections rather than treating them as unrelated competitions. Importantly, the date range does not mean each participant plays at the same time every day: Open A starts on January 2 at 2:30 PM, whereas Open B begins on January 2 at 8:30 PM. The complete round sequence below is the safest reference when deciding which section suits your travel plans.
⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
Two different classical schedules
Open A allocates 90 minutes to each player for the entire game, with 30 seconds added after every move from move one. This is a seven-round event, and the prospectus specifically says that Open A is valid for Italian Maestro title norms. That reference should not be confused with FIDE international master or grandmaster norm eligibility. Anyone pursuing a particular title or rating objective should confirm the applicable federation requirements before registering.
Open B uses 60 minutes for the entire game plus 30 seconds per move from move one over six rounds. It therefore carries a shorter base time than Open A, although both groups remain in the classical-rating program listed by the Italian federation. Because the clocks differ, players must use the control for their own section when deciding how to manage the opening, time pressure and adjournment-free endgame. Neither section’s clock format should be abbreviated into a misleading “90+30” or “60+30” if the units are omitted.

|---|---|
| ♟️ Open A | 7 rounds; 90 minutes for the game + 30 seconds per move |
| ♟️ Open B | 6 rounds; 60 minutes for the game + 30 seconds per move |
| ♟️ Late-arrival tolerance | A player arriving more than 30 minutes after a round’s scheduled start forfeits that game |
| ♟️ Published tie-breaks | REP, followed by Buchholz Cut-1; tournament management may add further technical criteria |
| 📅 Half-point bye | One justified half-point bye may be requested in advance for an eligible round, except either of the last two rounds |
Half-point byes and tournament conduct
The organizer permits one half-point bye per player, including where applicable a delayed start in the opening round. The request must reach tournament management before the tournament starts, must identify a particular round, and cannot subsequently be withdrawn. Furthermore, neither of the final two rounds is eligible for this concession. This is a limited option for a known scheduling conflict, not a standing right to miss games at short notice. Players should send the request to the organizer’s designated tournament email rather than rely on a casual conversation at the venue.
The prospectus prohibits bringing individual games forward or postponing them. In addition, a player who misses a round without notifying tournament management by that round’s conclusion will be withdrawn automatically. During games, mobile phones and other electronic devices capable of suggesting moves must remain switched off and kept separate from the player unless an arbiter specifically authorizes otherwise. Breaches may lead to loss of the current game or further disqualification. These conditions are especially important for visitors managing calls, transport disruptions or accompanying family members.
🏆 Prize Fund
The combined published fund is €3,600, with €2,180 allocated to Open A and €1,420 to Open B. Adding the individual cash awards in the federation-approved prospectus reproduces these section totals. Accordingly, the overall figure is a defined cash allocation rather than an estimate assembled from only the top prizes. At the European Central Bank reference rate of EUR 1 = USD 1.1150 on October 27, 2026, the combined amount equals US$4,014, shown here as approximately US$4,010. The exchange-rate equivalent is informational and may differ when prizes are paid.

Open A’s overall first prize is €500, but there are also eight published overall places. The additional prizes recognize three competitors rated below 2000 and the leading eligible players in the over-50 and over-65 categories. Because the prospectus expressly bars accumulating multiple prizes, a competitor qualifying in more than one bracket does not automatically receive every possible award. The organizer will apply the published priority order.

Open B distributes seven overall prizes and six additional rating or age awards. In particular, its under-1600 classification awards three places, while the age categories include over 50, over 65 and under 14. The published under-14 category is a prize category, not a separate junior playing section. The regulations assign unrated entrants a notional Elo of 1399 for the purpose of relevant rating-bracket awards. Parents and coaches should therefore verify both playing-group eligibility and prize-category eligibility instead of assuming the two are equivalent.
♟️ Sections / Groups
Open A — Above 1799 Elo
Open A welcomes players whose Elo is greater than 1799, meaning the published threshold starts at 1800. The organizer also authorizes three wild cards for Open A. With seven rounds and a longer time control, Open A is the section to consider when maximizing classical competition and pursuing the Italian Maestro-title objective described in the prospectus.
Open B — Below 1900 Elo
Open B is reserved for players whose Elo is below 1900, with six games on a distinct timetable. This includes players who meet the eligibility conditions at lower ratings, although national registration and FIDE-list requirements still apply. A player rated 1800–1899 satisfies the numerical rating limits printed for both Open A and Open B. Both groups hold separate tournaments with their own round timetables.

|---|---|
| ♟️ Open A | Elo above 1799; seven rounds; 80-player limit; three wild cards mentioned |
| ♟️ Open B | Elo below 1900; six rounds; 80-player limit |
| ♟️ Rating overlap | Players rated 1800–1899 fall within both published numerical ranges; seek confirmation on section selection |
| ♟️ Under-14 participants | Open B has an under-14 prize, but no separate youth-only tournament is announced |
| 📍 Maximum total capacity | 160 places across both sections if all available entries are filled |
| ♟️ Unrated competitors | For prize classification, the organizer assigns a notional rating of 1399 |
The two sections take place at the same club, yet their game times differ substantially. On January 3, for example, Open A has a morning and an evening round, while Open B meets in the afternoon. Players who accompany a friend or family member in the other section should check both timetables carefully. The organizer’s 80-player cap for each group also means that an apparently distant registration deadline does not guarantee places will remain available until that date.
📅 Schedule
The organizer has published specific dates and starting times for all seven Open A rounds and all six Open B rounds. The times below are local to Turin (CET, UTC+1, in January). Both sections begin on Saturday, January 2, 2027, but Open A ends with a Wednesday afternoon game while Open B finishes with a Wednesday morning game. Prize ceremonies follow the completion of each section.

| 📅 Wed, Jan 6 — 9:00 AM | Round 6 |
Open A has two double-round days: January 3 and January 5. Open B has one double-round day: January 4. Therefore, competitors should use the section-specific round times rather than a general festival summary when planning travel, rest and meals. The published round-by-round schedule above is the correct reference for each section.
Because multiple rounds begin in the evening, participants should not assume every game will finish before normal dinner or transport hours. Conversely, Open B entrants considering departure on January 6 should allow time for the final morning game, any postgame duties and the subsequent prize ceremony. A practical travel plan should be based on the latest possible finish of a classical game rather than the scheduled start time alone.

Entries close when the applicable section reaches its maximum of 80 participants and, in any event, by December 29, 2026 under the published rules. The regulations allow applications after that date, including at the venue, only on a conditional basis and with a €15 surcharge. Therefore, late registration is not an assured extension of the normal entry period. Players planning a flight or hotel booking should establish that the organizer has accepted their place before making nonrefundable arrangements.
The prospectus directs players to preregister through Vesus and states that a preregistration becomes effective only after the entry fee has been paid. Payment is by bank transfer to Società Scacchistica Torinese under the instructions in the official PDF. Participants can follow the bank-transfer instructions in the official regulations.
Before submitting an entry
The official rules say foreign players who do not appear on the FIDE list must arrange the required federation identification with their own chess federation. Foreign participants can contact the organizer about their national-federation registration process. Additionally, named players who want a half-point bye must communicate that request before the festival begins; late administrative requests and changes to the chosen bye round are restricted.
🏛️ Organizer
The festival is organized by Società Scacchistica Torinese, an established Turin chess association based at Via Goito 13. The association’s official venue description confirms that it owns the premises and maintains spaces for club play, tournaments and instruction. Rather than renting a generic exhibition hall, the January festival will use a dedicated chess environment with club facilities. The organizer has a separate profile on MyChess.Events, so a duplicate profile is not required for this tournament.
For questions about entry eligibility, payments, schedule changes, arbiter decisions and bye requests, the regulations designate tornei@scacchisticatorinese.it. The contact numbers printed on the approved document are +39 011 657072 and +39 392 1181395. Formal absence, withdrawal and half-point-bye communications must go by email, so a telephone call alone should not be relied upon for those matters.

Playing at the Società Scacchistica Torinese clubhouse
The playing venue is Società Scacchistica Torinese, Via Goito 13, 10125 Turin, Italy. The club’s official description places it near Torino Porta Nuova station, a practical arrival point for visitors coming from other Italian cities and from Turin Airport. Importantly, this is the tournament address identified in the federation-approved 2027 prospectus, not merely the organizer’s mailing address or a venue used in an earlier edition.
The club describes approximately 360 square meters across two levels. Its upper level includes a lounge for casual chess, a bar, an office, a library and service areas; the lower level contains two rooms used for tournaments and instruction. The club’s tournament rooms provide a dedicated playing environment for both Open A and Open B.

The club’s two-level arrangement matters when arriving for the first time. Allow time to find the correct room and check the tournament notice board rather than walking straight into the upper lounge. In addition, the first games in Open A and Open B are several hours apart on January 2, so traveling players should verify their own check-in and arrival instructions in advance. The club’s official website provides further details about the premises and entrance.
🏨 Accommodation
The tournament takes place in central Turin, close to Torino Porta Nuova railway station. The following hotels publish their locations and accommodation details on their own official websites. Their central positions provide practical options for players attending the five-day chess festival. Travelers can compare room categories and booking conditions directly through the properties.
Starhotels Majestic — Porta Nuova area
Starhotels Majestic is at Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 54, 10123 Turin. The hotel describes itself as directly opposite Torino Porta Nuova railway station, making it a potential starting point for a stay centered on rail access. Because the tournament club is also near Porta Nuova, this is a practical area to consider for players without a car. The hotel’s own website includes room categories and booking information. NH Torino Centro — Vinzaglio area
NH Torino Centro is at Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 104, 10121 Turin, near the Vinzaglio metro area. Its official property page lists accommodation and various guest services, including parking, although individual service conditions may change. This offers an alternative to the immediate Porta Nuova area for travelers who prefer metro access or are comparing different room configurations. 🚆 How to Get There
Arriving by air
The closest major airport is Turin Airport (Torino-Caselle). For the most direct approach to the tournament area, the Arriva Italia airport bus serves Torino Porta Nuova and Torino Porta Susa, with stops and fare information on its official service page. The published one-way fare at the time of research is €7.50, while a return option is listed at €11 total. Express services are advertised as taking under 30 minutes between the airport and city center under their stated operating conditions; actual travel times can differ with the service selected and traffic. Arriva Italia airport line.
An alternative is the airport railway connection to Torino Porta Susa, described by the airport operator as a roughly half-hour train journey, operating seven days a week. The published operator page lists a €3.70 fare, although ticket prices and service schedules can change before January. From Porta Susa, travelers should make a separate local connection to the Porta Nuova district or arrange other transport to Via Goito 13. The tourist board also identifies airport buses, rail links and taxis as ways to reach the city. Turin Airport train information and Turin tourism airport transport overview.
Arriving by train
Torino Porta Nuova is the most straightforward central railway reference for the venue because the organizer itself describes Via Goito 13 as nearby. National and regional services connect Turin with other parts of Italy; travelers should search their specific itinerary and departure station on the train operator’s current booking system. From Torino Porta Susa, travelers can continue by local metro, bus or taxi to the Porta Nuova district.
Final approach to the clubhouse
The confirmed destination is the association building at Via Goito 13. Once in the Porta Nuova area, use the address to reach the club and allow extra time to locate the assigned playing room. Players carrying luggage can first travel to their hotel before proceeding to the club. Drivers should check local parking rules, restricted traffic zones and any arrival restrictions.

ℹ️ Other Information
Scoring, tie-breaks and rating classification
The approved regulations specify REP followed by Buchholz Cut-1 as the published order of tie-break criteria. They also reserve the right for tournament management to add further technical criteria. Players competing for a place or category award should therefore review the event’s published standings and organizer announcements during the festival. The published tie-break order is used to distinguish players tied on tournament points.
For the purpose of category prizes, a player who has no Elo is assigned a notional value of 1399. This does not mean the player automatically receives an official FIDE rating of 1399. It is a local classification rule in the prize regulations. Likewise, the two group thresholds are published as strict inequalities: Open A above 1799 and Open B below 1900. Entrants close to a boundary should consult the organizer about the exact rating list and reference date being used.
Important player obligations
All formal messages about absence, withdrawal or requests for a half-point bye must be sent to tornei@scacchisticatorinese.it. A late arrival exceeding 30 minutes results in forfeiture, and requests to play a game ahead of or after its scheduled date are not permitted. The rules also specify that electronic devices capable of assisting with moves must remain switched off and apart from the player during games. Participants should read the complete Italian text rather than rely exclusively on this English-language summary, especially where a rules interpretation affects their entry or result.
Official documents and updates
The controlling document for this guide is the federation-approved 2027 tournament prospectus, published for the 56th edition and approved in July 2026. The Italian Chess Federation listing confirms the dates, two groups, venue, time controls and €3,600 total prize fund. The official Società Scacchistica Torinese site remains the appropriate place to look for organizer updates, while the designated tournament email can clarify current registration instructions. The current rules and playing schedule are specific to the January 2027 festival.
For broader trip planning, the combination of a dedicated city-center chess venue, a published round schedule and nearby rail connections makes it possible to compare several approaches to a five-day stay. Nevertheless, tournament-related decisions should come first: select the correct section, confirm acceptance and payment, reserve enough time for late games and verify the departure arrangements for January 6. The prize and schedule information presented here is specific to the 2027 edition and should not be treated as standing regulations for future festivals.
