♟️ About Poison Pawns Chess Club
Poison Pawns Chess Club is an active chess organization based in Houston, Texas, United States. The club combines frequent rated competition with community chess, social play, and a permanent tournament venue. Its programme is designed for players of different ages and strengths, from newcomers and developing club players to experienced competitors and titled players.
A major part of the club’s identity is its unusually active tournament schedule. Poison Pawns promotes chess on several days each week and organizes a wide range of US Chess-rated tournaments. In addition, selected classical events are also FIDE rated. The calendar includes evening Swiss tournaments, weekend championships, quick chess, state championships, scholastic competition, and larger multi-day events.
Edgar Acosta is the principal organizer associated with Poison Pawns Chess Club and The Houston Chess Studio. He serves as the main tournament contact for many of the organization’s events. Moreover, he has directed official Texas championship competitions and works closely with the Texas Chess Association and US Chess tournament system.
🏠 Houston Chess Studio
The Houston Chess Studio serves as the main tournament base of Poison Pawns Chess Club. It is located at 250 Patton Street, Suite H, Houston, Texas 77009.
The club describes the Studio as a dedicated brick-and-mortar chess venue designed for regular competitive play. Instead of relying only on temporary hotel or school locations, Poison Pawns can maintain a continuing tournament schedule from the same Houston base. Therefore, players have access to rated chess throughout much of the year.
The venue hosts classical, quick, scholastic, and state championship events. It also supports multi-day tournaments with several sections and substantial prize funds. Chess sets, clocks, and tournament infrastructure are available for organized events, while anti-cheating procedures are used for major competitions.
The Studio is located close to North Loop 610 and North Interstate 45. Free parking is available, and several restaurants are located in or near the same commercial area. As a result, the venue can support both shorter one-day competitions and longer weekend tournaments.
📅 Weekly and Recurring Tournament Program
Poison Pawns maintains one of the more intensive recurring chess schedules in the Houston area. The club advertises chess activity five days a week and as many as 13 rated games per week through its recurring tournament programme.
A regular part of the calendar is the Tuesday Night Swiss. These events are normally played over several consecutive Tuesday evenings and provide players with slower, US Chess-rated tournament games without requiring an entire weekend.
The club also runs weekend tournaments throughout the year. These range from shorter rapid or quick competitions to five-round classical Swiss events played over two or three days. Many tournaments include separate Championship and rating-limited sections, which allows players to compete against opponents closer to their level.
In addition, Poison Pawns organizes a weekly social chess meetup at Slowpokes in Houston. The Wednesday gathering runs from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM and regularly fills multiple boards. Players of different ages and strengths are encouraged to participate, making the social programme an important complement to the rated tournament calendar.
🌍 FIDE and US Chess Rated Events
Poison Pawns does not limit its programme to domestic rating events. Selected Houston Chess Studio tournaments are rated by both FIDE and US Chess, creating opportunities for players to establish or improve international ratings.
For example, the $2,000 May Championship 2026 included FIDE- and US Chess-rated Championship and Challengers sections. The competition used a classical G/90 +30 time control and offered three rating sections.
The $2,000 October Championship 2026 followed a similar structure. Its Championship and Challengers sections were FIDE and US Chess rated, while the Reserve section remained US Chess rated.
For eligible players who need a USA-flagged FIDE ID, tournament information also provides guidance on the application process. Therefore, the club’s stronger classical tournaments can serve as an accessible route into international-rated competition without leaving Houston.
🏆 Texas State Championship Activity
Poison Pawns Chess Club has become increasingly involved in official Texas state championship events. The organization works with the Texas Chess Association to host state-level competitions at The Houston Chess Studio.
The 2026 Texas Action Championship attracted 59 players. GM Joshua Ruiz Castillo won the championship with a perfect 5/5 score. The event featured multiple rating sections and gave players of different strengths an opportunity to compete for state championship honors.
The Studio also hosted the 2026 Texas Senior State Championship. The winner earned the right to represent Texas in the John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions, together with the associated Texas Chess Association travel stipend.
Later in the year, Poison Pawns expanded its state championship programme further. The calendar included the Texas State Chess Triathlon Championship 2026 and the 2026 Texas Women’s Chess Championship. Consequently, the organization’s role now extends beyond ordinary club tournaments into several important parts of the Texas championship structure.
☀️ Tournament Activity in 2026
The 2026 calendar demonstrated the range of events organized at The Houston Chess Studio. Poison Pawns began the year with recurring classical championships and continued with state championships, monthly competitions, evening events, and FIDE-rated tournaments.
The $1,500 January Championship offered a multi-day classical format. This was followed by events such as the Texas Action Championship, Texas Senior State Championship, and the $2,500 April Championship.
In May, the club staged its $2,000 May Championship, including FIDE-rated sections. Regular Tuesday Night Swiss competitions continued alongside the larger weekend tournaments.
The autumn schedule remained active. The $2,000 October Championship again offered FIDE- and US Chess-rated competition. Meanwhile, the 2026 Texas Women’s Chess Championship brought another official state title event to the Studio.
November featured a $1,500 Championship, while December included the Poison Pawns Club Championship 2026. The club championship used a five-round classical Swiss format and welcomed both club members and non-members.
The Houston Chess Studio also serves as a venue for tournaments organized by other chess organizations. For example, the 1st Azeri Chess Academy Open was held there in October 2026. That nine-round FIDE-rated event offered norm opportunities and a $12,500 guaranteed prize fund. Although Poison Pawns was not the organizer, hosting such an event demonstrates the Studio’s capacity for larger international-format tournaments.
📆 2027 Texas Championship Program
Poison Pawns continues its state championship activity in 2027, with several Texas title events already scheduled at The Houston Chess Studio.
The 2027 Texas Action Championship is scheduled for February 20, 2027. It continues the state championship format that Poison Pawns successfully hosted in 2026.
The 2027 Texas Senior Chess Championship will follow on March 20–21, 2027. The tournament is sanctioned by US Chess and the Texas Chess Association. The Texas resident champion will qualify to represent the state at the John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions. In addition, the Texas Chess Association provides a $500 stipend under the published conditions.
The 2027 Texas Quick Chess Championship is scheduled for April 24, 2027. It will feature nine rounds of quick chess at The Houston Chess Studio and will determine another official Texas state champion.
Together, these events establish Poison Pawns as a recurring host of multiple Texas championship formats rather than simply a local tournament club.
🌟 Growth & Achievements
Poison Pawns has developed a model built around frequent competition, a permanent playing venue, and a combination of serious tournament chess with community activity.
One important achievement is the creation of a schedule that allows Houston players to compete regularly without travelling long distances. Players can participate in weekday leagues, weekend tournaments, state championships, and selected FIDE-rated events from the same venue.
The club has also demonstrated that its programme can accommodate very different player groups. Beginners and scholastic players can find suitable events, while stronger competitors can enter open sections, FIDE-rated tournaments, and Texas championship competitions.
Moreover, The Houston Chess Studio increasingly serves the wider chess community. Other organizers can use the venue for major competitions, while Poison Pawns continues to expand its own recurring calendar.
🏛️ Organization and Community Chess
Edgar Acosta is the principal organizer and tournament contact for Poison Pawns Chess Club. His work includes tournament scheduling, registrations, communication with players, and coordination of major events at The Houston Chess Studio.
The club also maintains a membership programme. Members receive reduced entry fees for many Poison Pawns tournaments and can receive additional benefits connected with selected events. The programme helps support the club’s continuing tournament activity and broader chess community.
At the same time, Poison Pawns retains a strong social component. The weekly Wednesday meetup welcomes casual players alongside regular tournament competitors. This combination of social chess, recurring rated tournaments, FIDE events, and state championships gives the organization a distinctive place within the Houston chess scene.
