The 2nd Kuwait International Chess Tournament 2027 will take place from January 10–20, 2027 in Kuwait. Organized by the Kuwait Chess Federation, the international festival combines four FIDE-rated competitions: Masters, Challengers, Rapid and Blitz.

The two classical sections feature nine-round Swiss tournaments, while the Rapid and Blitz competitions are both played over nine rounds on January 15. The Masters tournament is aimed primarily at players rated 1900 and above, while the Challengers section is designed for players rated 1899 and below.

Across the four competitions, the organizer has published a combined cash prize fund of $15,000. International players requiring visa assistance have an earlier registration deadline, while the official hotel and playing venue have not yet been announced.

The festival consists of four separate tournaments.

Tournament Format & Time Control
Masters 9-round Swiss; 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus 30 seconds per move from move one
Challengers 9-round Swiss; 60 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move
Rapid 9 rounds; 10 minutes plus 3 seconds increment per move
Blitz 9 rounds; 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment per move

The published tiebreak order is:

  1. Direct Encounter
  2. Buchholz
  3. Sonneborn-Berger
  4. Greater Number of Victories with Black

Prizes are awarded according to the final tiebreak ranking and are not shared.

A player may receive only one prize within a tournament. If a player qualifies for more than one award, the highest-value prize applies.

👥 Sections / Groups

Masters

The Masters tournament is primarily open to players with a FIDE Standard rating of 1900 or higher.

The organizer’s current information also permits players rated 1700–1899 to participate subject to organizer approval.

Kuwaiti and GCC players are exempt from the standard rating eligibility requirement under the published conditions.

Challengers

The Challengers tournament is intended for players with a FIDE rating of 1899 or below.

A valid FIDE ID is mandatory.

Rapid & Blitz

Both Rapid and Blitz are open to players holding a valid FIDE ID and are played as separate nine-round competitions.

Registration is completed online through the official tournament website.

Players who require an entry visa to Kuwait must register by:

November 25, 2026

Players who do not require visa support must register by:

January 1, 2027

Registration is confirmed only after the required participation fees and related payments have been received.

A valid FIDE ID is mandatory for registration.

ℹ️ Other Information

The organizer requires all players to follow a business casual, elegant casual or smart casual dress code during the tournament and awards ceremony. Shorts and slippers are not permitted under the published conditions.

Mobile phones and other electronic devices may not be brought into the playing hall, even when switched off. A player carrying such a device into the hall may lose the game.

Fair-play procedures include possible random checks before and after games. Smoking is prohibited in the playing hall.

Players who are absent for two rounds will be withdrawn from the tournament.

Any appeal against a decision of the Chief Arbiter or Deputy Arbiter must be submitted in writing within one hour after the end of the playing session. The published appeal fee is $100, refundable if the appeal is upheld.

The organizer states that participants will be required to stay at the same hotel as the playing venue. However, the official hotel, playing hall and full address have not yet been published.
