Section Échecs MJC Coursan, also known locally as Checke & Mate, is the chess section of the Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture de Coursan in Coursan, Aude, France. The section welcomes children and adults of all ages and playing strengths, combining recreational chess, instruction, competitive play, team events, and tournament organization.

The parent MJC de Coursan was founded in 1972 as a youth and popular-education association. It has developed into a major community organization offering numerous sporting, cultural, artistic, and educational activities from its premises at 10 Place Voltaire.

The chess section has expanded significantly in recent seasons and is now affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under club code N11043. The FFE currently records 12 Licence A and 6 Licence B players, while the club participates in both adult and youth regional interclub competition.

Marc Deltour is listed by the FFE as President and official club contact. Dany Hérivault is the chess section manager and coordinates much of its day-to-day activity and tournament development.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Section Échecs MJC Coursan is developing an increasingly structured tournament program while continuing to provide regular weekly chess activities for local members.

Its principal new competition is the Open Rapide Jean Claude Sérié, launched in 2026 as the section’s first FIDE-rated rapid Open. The event is named in memory of Jean-Claude Sérié, described by the chess section as its late former president.

The 1er Open Rapide Jean Claude Sérié 2026 takes place on November 14 at Salle Miro in Coursan. The tournament consists of seven Swiss rounds at 12 minutes plus 3 seconds per move and is rated by both the FFE and FIDE. Participation is capped at 100 players, with a published rating ceiling of 2200.

Patrice Capitanio serves as arbiter, while Dany Hérivault is one of the principal organizational contacts. The tournament offers general, women’s, youth, and rating-category prizes and is intended to become a recurring event in the local chess calendar.

The section also plans smaller youth competitions, including an Epiphany tournament for U14 players, and participates in other events organized throughout the Occitanie region.

🌱 Chess Training & Junior Development

Chess instruction is one of the core activities of the section. Training is open to beginners, experienced players, children, and adults, with an emphasis on learning in a friendly environment while respecting the competitive traditions of the game.

Regular sessions are held at the MJC premises on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The club describes its approach as combining enjoyment, sharing, mutual assistance, serious play, and respect for opponents.

The section also maintains a visible community presence outside its normal club room. During the current season, members participate in the Coursan market on the first Sunday of each month, helping introduce chess to residents who may not yet be members of the club.

Junior players can progress from introductory sessions into federation-licensed competition. The club’s participation in regional youth interclubs creates a competitive pathway for younger members, while local youth tournaments provide additional experience in a less formal environment.

The chess section remains relatively small by federation membership numbers, but its activity is expanding. The transition into FFE-affiliated competition, participation in regional leagues, and creation of the Jean Claude Sérié Open mark an important stage in its development.

The section also benefits from being part of the broader MJC structure. The MJC provides premises, administrative support, community visibility, and access to a large network of local families and participants across many different activities.

📚 MJC & Community Background

The MJC de Coursan has been active in the community since 1972. It provides sporting, cultural, artistic, and leisure activities and also manages programs for children and teenagers. The organization has historically maintained a broad role in community life through classes, events, exhibitions, performances, and youth programs.
