Échiquier Club Albigeois is a long-established chess club based in Albi, Tarn, France. The association promotes competitive and recreational chess throughout the Albi area, with activities for children, adults, beginners, experienced tournament players, and senior members.

The club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under club code V81001. Its regular headquarters and playing room are located at 7 Rue des Muettes in Albi, where several weekly training and playing sessions are organized. The club currently has more than 70 FFE-registered members across Licence A and Licence B.

Philippe Fabre serves as President of Échiquier Club Albigeois. Pierre Auréjac is the club’s principal public and tournament contact and is closely involved in its competitive calendar as an organizer and arbiter.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization has been one of the defining activities of Échiquier Club Albigeois for decades. The club organizes classical, rapid and blitz competitions ranging from internal tournaments to major regional opens.

One of its principal classical events is the Open FIDE Tarn Nord. The tournament reached its 21st edition in 2026, when it was played over six FIDE-rated classical rounds at the Maison des Sports in Albi. The event attracts players from Albi and the wider Occitanie chess community.

The club also maintains an active program of FIDE-rated internal tournaments and blitz events. During 2026 alone, Échiquier Club Albigeois organized several officially rated competitions at its Rue des Muettes headquarters, including classical internal tournaments and multiple blitz events.

This regular tournament activity gives club members opportunities to play rated chess throughout the season rather than relying exclusively on external opens.

⚡ Tournoi Rapide Michel De Baralle

One of the club’s most important traditions is its annual November 11 rapid tournament, which has been organized in Albi since 1979.

The tournament is now named in memory of Michel de Baralle, one of the most influential figures in the history of chess in Albi and the Tarn department. Michel joined Échiquier Club Albigeois in 1975 and soon became its President. Together with other club members, he helped establish the annual Albi rapid tournament and later became the first President of the Comité du Tarn des Échecs.

Michel de Baralle remained closely connected to the club and its November tournament for decades. Following his death in November 2025 at the age of 92, the event continues under his name as a tribute to his contribution to chess in Albi.

The Tournoi Rapide Michel De Baralle – Albi 2026 takes place on November 11 at the Salle des Fêtes de Pratgraussals. It consists of two FIDE-rated sections, with seven rounds at 20 minutes plus 3 seconds per move. Pierre Auréjac serves as organizer contact and arbiter.

🌱 Junior Chess & Training

Youth chess has long been an important component of Échiquier Club Albigeois.

The club operates separate training sessions for young beginners and more experienced juniors, allowing children to progress from basic chess instruction toward tournament competition. Its training structure also includes dedicated sessions for adult beginners and stronger adult players.

Junior members are encouraged to participate in departmental and regional championships as well as youth team competition. The club currently fields a team in the regional youth interclub structure.

Échiquier Club Albigeois has also worked with schools in Albi. Previous educational projects have included chess activities at local secondary schools and structured programs designed to introduce students to the game and encourage participation in school and club competitions.

The club’s role in youth development extends beyond weekly instruction. Albi hosted the French Chess Championships in 2022, with Échiquier Club Albigeois working alongside the French Chess Federation and the City of Albi on the organization of the national event.

🥇 Team Chess & Competitive Activity

Échiquier Club Albigeois participates actively in the French interclub system.

Its leading team currently competes in Nationale 4, while additional teams and players take part in regional and departmental competitions. In previous seasons, the club has also competed at Nationale 3 level.

Team chess provides club members with regular long-time-control competition against organizations from across Occitanie and neighboring areas. Combined with the club’s internal tournaments and open events, this creates a broad competitive program covering classical, rapid and blitz chess.

The club also has experienced arbiters and organizers within its membership, which allows it to stage numerous FFE- and FIDE-rated events throughout the year.

📚 History & Chess in Albi

Échiquier Club Albigeois has played an important role in the development of organized chess in Albi and the Tarn department for many decades.

Michel de Baralle became one of the central figures in that history after joining the club in 1975. In addition to leading the club and helping establish the Albi rapid tournament, he became the first President of the Comité du Tarn des Échecs when the departmental committee was founded in 1993.

The annual November rapid tournament became one of Albi’s longest-running chess traditions. By 2018, the event was already celebrating forty editions and attracting large fields, titled players and competitors from across the region.

Today, Échiquier Club Albigeois continues this tradition through FIDE-rated tournaments, national and regional team chess, youth instruction, school activities, and regular club sessions.
