Stockholms Schackförbund (Stockholm Chess Federation) is the regional governing body for chess in Stockholm, Sweden. Founded on January 28, 1911, it is affiliated with Sveriges Schackförbund (Swedish Chess Federation) and is the largest district federation within the Swedish national structure. Its jurisdiction covers Stockholm County except Norrtälje Municipality. The federation coordinates affiliated clubs, official district championships, team leagues, junior chess, school programs, tournaments, and wider chess-development activity across the Stockholm region.

Stockholms Schackförbund supports a network of 34 traditional chess clubs, together with numerous school chess organizations. Its competition program includes the Stockholm Individual Championships, rapid and blitz championships, Lag-DM team leagues, Stockholmsserien, junior district championships, Junior Grand Prix, junior team championships, senior events, and numerous FIDE-rated tournaments. The federation also operates the Stockholms Schacksalonger, a dedicated chess center on Södermalm, and organizes one of Sweden’s most important international tournaments, the Rilton Cup.

Karl Dingertz is the current Chairman of Stockholms Schackförbund, while Jonas Sandbom serves as Office Manager (Kanslichef) and oversees the federation’s extensive administrative and tournament operation. The federation has maintained an exceptionally active program in 2026, including the Stockholm Championships, junior competitions, major school-chess events, Stockholm Open, and its participation in the large Chessparty festival at Avicii Arena. The 2026–2027 Lag-DM season is now beginning, while the next Rilton Cup is scheduled for December 27, 2026 – January 5, 2027.

📜 More Than a Century of Stockholm Chess

Stockholms Schackförbund was established on January 28, 1911 and celebrated its centenary on the same date in 2011.

Its statutory responsibilities are to coordinate chess within the district, represent the interests of affiliated organizations, expand participation, support junior chess, establish competition regulations, and organize official federation tournaments.

Today, the federation remains the largest regional organization within the Swedish Chess Federation. Its network includes clubs with very different profiles, ranging from elite organizations and large junior programs to community and senior clubs.

Karl Dingertz was first elected Chairman in December 2023 and continues to lead the federation in 2026.

♜ Team and District Chess

Team chess forms an important part of the Stockholm competition structure.

The Lag-DM is the federation’s district team championship and currently operates through an Elite division plus Divisions 1–5. Team sizes vary by level, from 14 boards in the Elite division to four boards in Division 5.

The federation also administers the Stockholmsserien, which forms the Stockholm regional component below the higher national Allsvenskan divisions.

Preparations for the 2026–2027 Lag-DM are already underway. The federation published the new season’s pairings on September 5, 2026.

Rapid and blitz team championships supplement the classical leagues. In the 2025 Lag-DM Blitz Championship, Stockholms Schacksällskap defeated SK Rockaden in the final and secured its fourth consecutive title.

🎓 Junior and School Chess

Youth development is one of Stockholms Schackförbund’s largest areas of activity. Its annual program includes Junior-DM, Junior-Lag-DM, Miniorlag-DM, Knattelag-DM, Junior Grand Prix, girls’ competitions, holiday tournaments, training camps, and school championships.

The federation’s Junior Grand Prix provides regular competitive opportunities for children at different experience levels. Meanwhile, Junior-Lag-DM uses five-player club teams and creates a pathway toward Sweden’s national junior competitions.

The scale of participation is substantial. The 2026 Stockholm Junior Rapid Championship attracted 130 players across five age groups.

School chess reaches an even wider audience through Schackfyran and Schack56an. These national programs involve approximately 25,000 Swedish pupils from more than 1,000 classes each year, with Stockholms Schackförbund coordinating major district stages in the capital.

In April 2026, Stockholm’s school-chess activity formed part of the large Chessparty at Avicii Arena, which attracted more than 7,000 visitors from 31 countries over two days.

🌟 Rilton Cup

The Rilton Cup is Stockholms Schackförbund’s flagship international tournament and one of the best-known annual chess events in Scandinavia.

The 53rd Rilton Cup 2025/2026 was held from December 27, 2025 to January 5, 2026 at the Scandic Continental in central Stockholm. The main Cup consisted of nine FIDE-rated classical rounds and attracted a strong international field.

GM Xu Xiangyu of China produced an exceptional performance to win the tournament with 8/9, finishing a full point ahead of the nearest competitors. The event was directed by IO/IA Jonas Sandbom.

The festival also included rating-restricted competitions and side events. Registration is already open for the next edition, which is scheduled for December 27, 2026 – January 5, 2027, again at Scandic Continental.

🤝 Chess in Stockholm

Beyond formal championships, the federation works to make chess accessible throughout Stockholm.

The Stockholms Schacksalonger at Ringvägen 9B serves as a central playing venue and hosts competitions, junior camps, courses, lectures, club activities, and casual chess throughout the week.

The federation also cooperates with Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, libraries, schools, community projects, and major public events. In 2026, initiatives included public chess at the Stockholm Culture Festival and “Vi spelar ihop – schack för äldre,” a program aimed at bringing older people together through chess.

This combination of club support, competition, school chess, social initiatives, and major international tournaments gives Stockholms Schackförbund a central role in chess throughout the Swedish capital region.
