⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The LCC Swiss uses a full classical time control designed for serious international competition.

Players receive 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by another 30 minutes to finish the game. In addition, they receive a 30-second increment from move one.

The organizers plan to publish pairings by 22:30 on the day before each round. However, they will publish Round 3 pairings as soon as possible after Round 2 finishes.

Half-Point Byes

Players may request up to two half-point byes.

They can request them during registration or up to 24 hours before Round 1. Alternatively, players can request a future bye during the tournament.

For Rounds 2 and 4–9, players must submit the request by 22:00 on the previous evening. For Round 3, the deadline is 15:00 on Saturday.

However, special restrictions apply near the end of the tournament. A player scores zero if their second requested half-point bye falls in Round 9. Likewise, a player who requests both half-point byes in the final two rounds does not receive both half points.

Additional zero-point byes may be available by prior arrangement with the Chief Arbiter.

Defaults

A player who arrives more than 60 minutes after the scheduled start loses by default.

Moreover, a player who defaults will normally disappear from the remaining pairings unless the Chief Arbiter decides otherwise.

Title Norm Opportunities

The organizer specifically describes the LCC Swiss as suitable for players seeking FIDE title norms.

In addition, the announced field will include more than 40 GMs and IMs, which can help create the opponent mix required for norm attempts.

However, participation alone does not guarantee a norm opportunity. Each player must still satisfy all applicable FIDE requirements through their actual opponents, federations, ratings, and results.

British Championship Qualification

The LCC Swiss offers one British Championship qualifying place.

Therefore, eligible players have an additional competitive objective beyond the cash prizes and title-norm opportunities.

ECF International Series

The LCC Swiss forms part of the ECF International Series.

Access to Elite Events

Extra Rated Games After a Default

If an opponent fails to arrive before the one-hour default deadline, the present player wins the tournament game by forfeit.

They will look first within the same tournament, then among other LCC tournaments, and finally among other suitable available players.

The player can decline this extra game.

Fair Play

The London Chess Classic Festival Fair Play Policy applies throughout the tournament.

Appeals

A player may appeal an arbiter’s decision.

The organizer must receive the written appeal within 30 minutes of the decision.

The appeal also requires a £50 deposit (approximately $70). The organizer returns the deposit when the appeal succeeds.

Juniors

Parents and guardians remain responsible for junior participants.
