The Open de Gatineau 2026 will take place from November 20–22, 2026, at the Maison du citoyen in Gatineau, Quebec, directly across the Ottawa River from downtown Ottawa. Ligue d’échecs de l’Outaouais organizes the event as part of both the Tour du Québec 2026–27 and the Eastern Ontario Chess Association Grand Prix.
The festival offers two distinct tournaments. The three-day Classical Tournament features five rounds at 90+30 across four rating sections. Meanwhile, the one-day Discovery Tournament on Saturday, November 21 offers five rapid rounds at 25+5, with an Open section plus dedicated beginner women and junior groups.
The organizer advertises an overall C$12,000 prize fund (approximately $8,560). However, the currently itemized published prizes total C$11,700. Therefore, the C$12,000 figure should be treated as the organizer’s advertised headline amount, while the detailed prize tables below reproduce only the cash awards that are currently specified.

📍 Venue
The event takes place at:
Maison du citoyen – 25 Rue Laurier, Gatineau, QC J8X 4A6, Canada
The tournament organizer has reserved four playing areas: Salle des Fêtes, Gatineau, Mont-Bleu, and Agora.
The organizer highlights the venue’s soundproofing, lighting, and ventilation. Moreover, the building sits in the heart of the central Gatineau tourist district, close to restaurants and major attractions.
Parking
The Maison du citoyen has underground parking.
City of Gatineau rules state that the underground lot is free from 17:00 on weekdays and free throughout the weekend.
This fits the tournament schedule particularly well because Round 1 starts at 19:00 on Friday, while all Saturday and Sunday parking falls within the free weekend period.
The underground parking entrance is accessed from Rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville.
🏨 Accommodation
The organizer specifically recommends several nearby hotels.
Four Points by Sheraton Hotel & Conference Centre Gatineau-Ottawa
35 Rue Laurier, Gatineau, QC J8X 4E9, Canada
This hotel sits immediately beside the Maison du citoyen and connects to the venue area by a pedestrian link. Therefore, it offers the simplest accommodation option for players who want to stay next to the tournament.
The hotel has 201 rooms and an on-site restaurant.
Best Western Plus Gatineau-Ottawa Downtown
131 Rue Laurier, Gatineau, QC J8X 3W3, Canada
The tournament organizer lists this hotel as approximately a five-minute walk from the venue.
It provides a practical second option for players who want to stay within the same central Gatineau district.
Room prices vary by date and booking conditions. Therefore, players should check the live November 20–22 rate before booking.
🚆 How to Get There
Maison du citoyen stands in central Gatineau, directly across the Ottawa River from downtown Ottawa.
From Ottawa
The venue sits close to the interprovincial bridges connecting downtown Ottawa and Gatineau.
STO operates multiple bus routes through the central Gatineau area. Because service patterns can change, players should use the current STO journey planner shortly before traveling:
From Ottawa International Airport
The nearest major airport is Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW).
The airport’s O-Train Line 4 connects Airport Station with South Keys. From there, travelers can continue through the Ottawa transit network and then transfer toward Gatineau.
Taxi and rideshare services also operate directly from the airport.
Four Points by Sheraton lists the airport at approximately 14.3 km from the hotel, which is immediately beside the tournament venue.
By Car
Use:
Maison du citoyen – 25 Rue Laurier, Gatineau, QC J8X 4A6
Drivers arriving via Autoroute 50 can approach through Boulevard des Allumettières and Rue Laurier.
The City of Gatineau also publishes dedicated directions to the Maison du citoyen underground parking from the Alexandra Bridge and Portage Bridge.
ℹ️ Other Information
Current Entry
The official participant list showed 45 registered players as of September 19, 2026.
The Classical 2000+ section already includes:
GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux
GM Bator Sambuev
Therefore, the event already has two grandmasters in the published field more than two months before the tournament.
Tour du Québec
The Open de Gatineau is the third event of the 2026–27 Tour du Québec schedule.
The Tour du Québec has its own separate season-end class prize fund. Consequently, those circuit awards should not be added to the Gatineau Open’s tournament prize fund.
EOCA Grand Prix
The Classical event also forms part of the Eastern Ontario Chess Association Grand Prix.
This gives players from both Quebec and Eastern Ontario another competitive reason to participate.
2025 Edition
The previous Gatineau Open took place in April 2025.
GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux and FM Vincent Latorre both finished on 4.5/5 at the top of the main event. The CFC rating report records Rodrigue-Lemieux first and Latorre second, both on the same score.
The organizer subsequently moved the next Gatineau Open from its traditional spring period to November 2026.
Tournament Growth
Échecs Outaouais describes the Open de Gatineau as the largest chess tournament in the Outaouais region.
For 2026, the organization increased the advertised prize pool to C$12,000 and expanded the Discovery format with dedicated beginner women and junior sections.
Equipment
Players are asked to bring a chess clock if they have one.
Important
Players should verify their section, federation membership, rating, entry fee, requested byes, and payment status before the tournament begins.
Classical players should also remember that only the 2000+ and U2000 sections are FIDE-rated, while U1700 and U1400 receive FQE/CFC rating only.
Finally, the organizer currently advertises C$12,000 in total prizes, but the visible itemized prize table accounts for C$11,700. Players should rely on the organizer’s final published prize schedule if additional prizes are announced before November.
