The Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot 2026 will take place from November 10–20, 2026, at the Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel in Budapest, Hungary. Developed and operated by Norway Chess in partnership with FIDE, the event tests a new elite championship format that combines Fast Classic, Rapid and Blitz chess in one competition.

A field of 24 elite players will compete through a group stage and knockout phase. The system places greater scoring weight on longer games, while still testing players across all three disciplines. Therefore, success requires classical strength, rapid calculation and blitz speed.

The Budapest event is the official pilot for the Total Chess World Championship Tour, while the full championship season begins in 2027.

Blitz 3+2 Opening 9-round Swiss and knockout matches
🚀 Rapid 15+10 Knockout matches
♟️ Fast Classic 45+30 Group stage and knockout matches

The Fast Classic games receive FIDE classical rating.

Group Stage

The 24 players are divided into four groups of six.

Group Stage Detail Format
Groups 4 groups of 6 players
System Double round-robin
Duration 5 days
Games per Player 10
Time Control 45+30
Win 3 points
Draw 1 point
Loss 0 points

The four highest-rated players by standard rating are placed in different groups during the group draw.

Before the group stage, all players compete in a 9-round Blitz Swiss tournament at 3+2. Its ranking is used for group-stage tiebreak purposes.

Knockout Stage

After the group stage, every player advances to a four-player knockout bracket according to their position within the group.

Group Finish Knockout Bracket
1st in Group Knockout 1
2nd in Group Knockout 2
3rd in Group Knockout 3
4th in Group Knockout 4
5th in Group Knockout 5
6th in Group Knockout 6

Each bracket contains semifinals followed by placement matches.

A knockout match is played across two days. Each day contains:

Discipline Games per Day Win Draw
Blitz 3+2 4 1 point 0.5 point
🚀 Rapid 15+10 2 4 points 2 points
♟️ Fast Classic 45+30 1 8 points 4 points

As a result, the longer time controls carry substantially more weight.

Scores reset at the start of the second knockout day.

Armageddon

If a knockout match remains tied after both days, Armageddon decides the winner.

Armageddon Detail Rule
White 10 minutes
Black 7 minutes
Increment 1 second per move beginning with move 41
Draw Odds Black
Rating Not rated

The player with the higher combined match score receives first choice of color. If that score is also equal, the players use an Armageddon bidding procedure.

🧩 Sections / Formats

The Total Chess Pilot combines all three major disciplines into one competitive structure.

⚡ Blitz

The tournament begins with a 9-round Blitz Swiss at 3+2.

During the knockout phase, players then contest four Blitz games on each playing day.

🚀 Rapid

Rapid appears during the knockout stage. Each player contests two Rapid games per knockout day at 15+10.

♟️ Fast Classic

Fast Classic forms the core of the group stage. Each player contests 10 games over five days in a double round-robin group.

Fast Classic also becomes the most heavily weighted component of each knockout day.

ℹ️ Other Information

🌍 A New FIDE-Approved Championship Concept

The Total Chess World Championship Tour was developed by Norway Chess and approved by FIDE. It is designed to identify players who can perform at the highest level across Fast Classic, Rapid and Blitz rather than concentrating on only one discipline.

The Budapest tournament is the 2026 pilot event. It tests the sporting format, regulations and presentation before the full multi-city championship launches in 2027.

🏅 Tour Points

The six knockout brackets award different numbers of Tour points.

Bracket 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
Knockout 1 30 24 22 20
Knockout 2 20 18 17 16
Knockout 3 16 14 13 12
Knockout 4 12 11 10 9
Knockout 5 9 8 7 6
Knockout 6 6 5 4 3

The pilot will help refine the system that will be used during the full championship season.

🏆 Full Tour from 2027

From the official 2027 season, the Total Chess World Championship Tour is designed around three tournament locations followed by a four-player Grand Final.

The highest-performing players across the Tour advance to that Grand Final, where the championship format will ultimately determine the FIDE World Combined Champion.
