Total Chess is the organization and championship brand behind the Total Chess World Championship Tour, a new FIDE-approved global competition created by the team behind Norway Chess. Headquartered in Sandnes, Norway, the project combines three disciplines — Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz — within a single championship structure designed to identify the strongest all-round player. The championship is developed, owned, and operated by Norway Chess, with FIDE serving as its international governing partner.

The organization focuses on elite international chess, global event production, broadcasting, commercial partnerships, technology, and modern spectator presentation. Its competition model introduces Fast Classic at 45 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, alongside 15+10 Rapid and 3+2 Blitz. From 2027, the full Tour is planned as a multi-city international series in which players qualify through FIDE championships, ratings, major qualification events, and Tour performance.

Kjell Madland is CEO of Total Chess and founder of both Norway Chess and the Total Chess World Championship Tour. The project’s first major competitive test is the Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot 2026, scheduled for November 10–20, 2026 at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel in Budapest. The pilot brings together 24 elite players and will test the competition format, regulations, production model, and scoring system ahead of the first full championship season beginning in March 2027.

🌍 A New Global Championship Format

Total Chess was developed to create a championship that rewards excellence across different speeds of chess rather than a single discipline. Its central concept is summarized by the organization as “Three Disciplines. One Crown.”

Fast Classic retains the strategic character of classical chess while reducing game length for players and spectators. Rapid adds a greater premium on intuition and practical decision-making, while Blitz tests speed, calculation, and reactions under extreme time pressure.

The full championship structure will feature three Tour events followed by a Grand Final. Each regular event is designed for 24 elite players, with the strongest performers accumulating points toward qualification for the final stage.

🏆 FIDE Partnership and Championship Status

The Total Chess World Championship Tour received formal approval from FIDE in 2025. Norway Chess and FIDE jointly developed the sporting framework and qualification system, while the eventual Tour winner will receive the title of FIDE World Combined Champion.

Qualification incorporates several established pathways within international chess. These include the reigning World Champions, leading performers from the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, players from the FIDE rating lists, Candidates winners, and qualifiers through FIDE competition structures.

This cooperation gives Total Chess a direct connection to the existing World Championship ecosystem while introducing a separate combined discipline.

🌟 Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot 2026

The first official Total Chess Pilot will take place in Budapest, Hungary, at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel from November 10–20, 2026.

The pilot begins with a nine-round Blitz tournament used for group-stage tie-break purposes. Players then compete in four groups of six in a double round-robin Fast Classic stage. The strongest performers proceed into knockout competition incorporating Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic.

The announced field includes many of the world’s leading grandmasters. Among the first confirmed players are Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu.

The Budapest event is not yet the first full Tour season. Instead, it functions as an official test of the regulations, playing format, scoring structure, event production, and spectator experience before the global championship launches in 2027.

🚀 Full Tour Launch in 2027

The inaugural full Total Chess World Championship Tour is scheduled to begin in March 2027. The series will use multiple international host cities before culminating in a Grand Final.

The planned annual prize pool is at least $2.7 million. The first three Tour events are expected to carry minimum prize funds of $750,000 each, while the four-player Grand Final will offer at least $450,000, with additional performance bonuses.

Total Chess is actively developing relationships with host cities, commercial sponsors, investors, broadcasters, technology providers, and media partners as it prepares to move from its 2026 pilot phase into a recurring international championship.

Kjell Madland serves as CEO and Board Member of Total Chess. Benedicte Westre Skog is COO, while Anja Munro serves as CFO and Roy-André Tollefsen is CTO and Chairman of the Board.

The wider team includes specialists in event management, marketing, commercial partnerships, technology, and digital media. Total Chess also has an Advisory Board chaired by entrepreneur and chess enthusiast James Altucher, with members including Morten Borge and chess journalist Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam.

The project shares its organizational foundation with Norway Chess, whose experience in elite tournament production, Armageddon formats, broadcast innovation, player presentation, and spectator-focused chess provides the operational base for the new Tour.

Norway Chess is an elite international chess organizer based in Sandnes, Norway. The project began in 2012, while the first official Norway Chess tournament took place in 2013. It quickly developed into one of the strongest annual invitational events in world chess. After thirteen years in Stavanger, the organization moved its flagship tournaments to Oslo in 2026, with Deichman Bjørvika becoming the new playing venue.

Norway Chess focuses on elite competition, innovative tournament formats, professional broadcasting, commercial partnerships, and spectator-focused presentation. Its flagship program now consists of Norway Chess and Norway Chess Women, which run side by side with the same number of players, format, playing conditions, and prize fund. The organization is particularly known for using an Armageddon game after every drawn classical game, ensuring a decisive result in every match.

📜 History and Innovation

The idea for Norway Chess emerged from an ambition to bring the world’s strongest players to Norway during the rise of Magnus Carlsen. The inaugural tournament followed in 2013 and immediately attracted leading grandmasters.

Over the following years, Norway Chess became known for both competitive strength and experimentation. In 2017, it staged what the organizer describes as the highest-rated ten-player tournament ever held.

The tournament also developed several distinctive presentation concepts. These include Armageddon deciders, the confessional booth, innovative broadcast elements, and the Game Theory Corner. As a result, Norway Chess has consistently combined elite competition with new ways of presenting chess to spectators.

👑 Norway Chess Women

A major development came in 2024, when Norway Chess launched Norway Chess Women. The women’s event runs alongside the main tournament with identical competitive conditions.

Both tournaments use the same format, the same number of players, and equal prize funds. Therefore, Norway Chess Women created a new benchmark for prize equality at elite invitational level.

The competition continued in 2025 and returned for its third edition in 2026. Previous champions include Ju Wenjun in 2024 and Anna Muzychuk in 2025.

For 2026, each tournament offered a total prize fund of NOK 1,690,000, including NOK 700,000 for first place.

🏆 Norway Chess 2026

The Norway Chess 2026 tournaments took place from May 25 to June 5, 2026 at Deichman Bjørvika in Oslo. This edition marked the first move away from Stavanger after thirteen years.

Both competitions featured six players in a double round-robin format over ten rounds. A classical victory earned three points. However, every drawn classical game was followed by Armageddon. The Armageddon winner received 1.5 points, while the losing player received one point.

GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu won Norway Chess 2026 with 18 points. Wesley So finished second with 17 points, while Alireza Firouzja placed third with 15.5.

In Norway Chess Women, GM Bibisara Assaubayeva secured the title with 16.5 points. Zhu Jiner finished only half a point behind, while Anna Muzychuk took third place.

🌍 Total Chess World Championship Tour

Norway Chess has expanded beyond its original annual tournament through the creation of the Total Chess World Championship Tour.

The new championship is developed, owned, and operated by Norway Chess. However, it operates publicly under the separate Total Chess brand. Therefore, Total Chess and Norway Chess should remain separate organizer profiles while retaining a clear organizational connection.

The FIDE-approved Tour combines Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz to determine the FIDE World Combined Champion. Its official pilot is scheduled for November 10–20, 2026 at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel in Budapest.

The full international Tour is planned to launch in 2027. Norway Chess developed the concept as its next major step toward building a recurring global championship series across several host cities.
