Total Chess is the organization and championship brand behind the Total Chess World Championship Tour, a new FIDE-approved global competition created by the team behind Norway Chess. Headquartered in Sandnes, Norway, the project combines three disciplines — Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz — within a single championship structure designed to identify the strongest all-round player. The championship is developed, owned, and operated by Norway Chess, with FIDE serving as its international governing partner. The organization focuses on elite international chess, global event production, broadcasting, commercial partnerships, technology, and modern spectator presentation. Its competition model introduces Fast Classic at 45 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, alongside 15+10 Rapid and 3+2 Blitz. From 2027, the full Tour is planned as a multi-city international series in which players qualify through FIDE championships, ratings, major qualification events, and Tour performance. Kjell Madland is CEO of Total Chess and founder of both Norway Chess and the Total Chess World Championship Tour. The project’s first major competitive test is the Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot 2026, scheduled for November 10–20, 2026 at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel in Budapest. The pilot brings together 24 elite players and will test the competition format, regulations, production model, and scoring system ahead of the first full championship season beginning in March 2027.

🌍 A New Global Championship Format

Total Chess was developed to create a championship that rewards excellence across different speeds of chess rather than a single discipline. Its central concept is summarized by the organization as “Three Disciplines. One Crown.” Fast Classic retains the strategic character of classical chess while reducing game length for players and spectators. Rapid adds a greater premium on intuition and practical decision-making, while Blitz tests speed, calculation, and reactions under extreme time pressure. The full championship structure will feature three Tour events followed by a Grand Final. Each regular event is designed for 24 elite players, with the strongest performers accumulating points toward qualification for the final stage.

🏆 FIDE Partnership and Championship Status

The Total Chess World Championship Tour received formal approval from FIDE in 2025. Norway Chess and FIDE jointly developed the sporting framework and qualification system, while the eventual Tour winner will receive the title of FIDE World Combined Champion. Qualification incorporates several established pathways within international chess. These include the reigning World Champions, leading performers from the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, players from the FIDE rating lists, Candidates winners, and qualifiers through FIDE competition structures. This cooperation gives Total Chess a direct connection to the existing World Championship ecosystem while introducing a separate combined discipline.

🌟 Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot 2026

The first official Total Chess Pilot will take place in Budapest, Hungary, at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel from November 10–20, 2026. The pilot begins with a nine-round Blitz tournament used for group-stage tie-break purposes. Players then compete in four groups of six in a double round-robin Fast Classic stage. The strongest performers proceed into knockout competition incorporating Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic. The announced field includes many of the world’s leading grandmasters. Among the first confirmed players are Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. The Budapest event is not yet the first full Tour season. Instead, it functions as an official test of the regulations, playing format, scoring structure, event production, and spectator experience before the global championship launches in 2027.

🚀 Full Tour Launch in 2027

The inaugural full Total Chess World Championship Tour is scheduled to begin in March 2027. The series will use multiple international host cities before culminating in a Grand Final. The planned annual prize pool is at least $2.7 million. The first three Tour events are expected to carry minimum prize funds of $750,000 each, while the four-player Grand Final will offer at least $450,000, with additional performance bonuses. Total Chess is actively developing relationships with host cities, commercial sponsors, investors, broadcasters, technology providers, and media partners as it prepares to move from its 2026 pilot phase into a recurring international championship.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Kjell Madland serves as CEO and Board Member of Total Chess. Benedicte Westre Skog is COO, while Anja Munro serves as CFO and Roy-André Tollefsen is CTO and Chairman of the Board. The wider team includes specialists in event management, marketing, commercial partnerships, technology, and digital media. Total Chess also has an Advisory Board chaired by entrepreneur and chess enthusiast James Altucher, with members including Morten Borge and chess journalist Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam. The project shares its organizational foundation with Norway Chess, whose experience in elite tournament production, Armageddon formats, broadcast innovation, player presentation, and spectator-focused chess provides the operational base for the new Tour.
