Norfolk County Chess Championships 2026 takes place on October 3–4, 2026 at Horstead Tithe Barn in Norfolk, England. Organized by the Norfolk County Chess Association, the tournament determines the county champions across several rating categories.

The September 2026 ECF Standard ratings are used for tournament purposes.
Unrated players may participate if they satisfy the championship eligibility requirements. The Controller will assign an estimated rating for section allocation and tournament administration.
All tournament results will be submitted to the English Chess Federation for inclusion in the Standard rating list.
⏸️ Half-Point Bye
Players may request one half-point bye in one of Rounds 1–4.
The preferred method is to request the bye when entering the tournament.
A bye may also be requested during the event. However, acceptance of a later request is at the Controller’s discretion.
The Controller’s decision is final in all tournament matters.
🏆 Prize Fund
The organizer confirms that prize money will be awarded to the winner of each section. However, exact cash amounts have not been published.
Both section winners also receive trophies.

✅ Eligibility
The Norfolk County Chess Championships is a closed county championship, rather than an unrestricted open tournament.
A player is eligible to participate if at least one of the following conditions applies:
- The player was born in Norfolk
- The player has been resident in the county of Norfolk for at least six months
- The player is a member of a chess club registered with the Norfolk County Chess Association
In addition, every participant must be an ECF Direct Member at Bronze level or above.
Players who are unsure whether they qualify should contact the organizer before registering.

♟️ About Norfolk County Chess Association
The Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) is the governing and coordinating body for organized chess across Norfolk, England, including appropriate surrounding areas. It is affiliated with the English Chess Federation (ECF) and the East Anglian Chess Union (EACU). Its role is to promote adult and junior chess, support affiliated clubs, organize county teams, maintain local league and cup competitions, and provide individual tournaments for players of different strengths.
The association operates an extensive annual competition program. This includes the Norfolk League, Norfolk & Suffolk Cup, Williamson Cup and Plate, Rapidplay Handicap Cup, Norfolk Blitz Championship, county individual championships, junior chess, county representative teams, and the Great Yarmouth Chess Congress. NCCA also works with chess clubs throughout Norfolk and provides the regional structure through which many players progress from local club competition into county and national chess.
John Wickham is the current Chairman of the Norfolk County Chess Association and also serves as its Competitions & Events Organiser and ECF/EACU Delegate. He has been involved in Norfolk chess administration for more than four decades and organizes several of the county’s principal events, including the Norfolk Championship, Norfolk Rapidplay, Norfolk Blitz, and Great Yarmouth Congress. In 2026, NCCA has already completed its Great Yarmouth Congress and sixth Norfolk Blitz Championship, while the Norfolk County Chess Championships are scheduled for October 3–4, 2026 at Horstead Tithe Barn.
♜ Norfolk League and Club Chess
The Norfolk County Chess Association provides the main competitive structure linking chess clubs across the county.
Its league system currently operates through four divisions, allowing clubs to enter teams at different competitive levels. Players represent organizations from Norwich, King’s Lynn, Aylsham, Wymondham, Broadland, St Johns, the University of East Anglia, and other communities.
The association also organizes several knockout and team competitions outside the regular league. These include the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup, Williamson Cup, Williamson Plate, and Rapidplay Handicap Cup.
For the most recently completed league season, Broadland Bitterns won Division 1, with Norfolk & Norwich A finishing second. St Johns Templars won Division 2, UEA Chess Society took Division 3, and Norfolk & Norwich D led Division 4.
🏆 County Championships and Individual Chess
Individual county competitions form another major part of the NCCA program.
The association organizes the annual Norfolk Championship, which determines the county individual champion, alongside a Challengers competition and rating prizes. It also maintains a substantial historical Roll of Honour covering league, championship, rapid, blitz, and cup winners.

⚡ Rapid and Blitz Chess
NCCA supplements its classical program with dedicated rapid and blitz competitions.
The 6th Norfolk Blitz Championship was held on May 25, 2026 at Horstead Tithe Barn. The event was divided into Championship and Challengers sections.
Michael Harris won the 2026 Championship, with Jason Leverett finishing second and Martin Walker third. Harris also received the Greg Tebble Cup.
In the Challengers section, Owen Langston took first place, ahead of Sam Farley and Jai Jai Fincham-Richardson.
These faster events give players another route into county competition while complementing the traditional league and championship calendar.
🌟 Great Yarmouth Chess Congress
The Great Yarmouth Chess Congress is one of NCCA’s largest tournaments open to players from outside Norfolk.
The 2026 Congress took place on April 25–26 at Great Yarmouth Racecourse. It consisted of five Swiss-system rounds across three sections: Open, Major U1900, and Minor U1600.
Alan Merry won the Open section. Chris Perkins took first place in the U1900 competition, while Adriaan Mouton won the U1600 section.
The event also provided separate rating, junior, and female prizes. Its 2026 sponsors included Bodo Limited, Great Yarmouth Town Centre Partnership, ChessPick, and additional supporters of junior and female prizes.
This Congress fulfills one of NCCA’s constitutional objectives: organizing an annual tournament that is open to players from other counties.
🎓 Junior and County Representative Chess
Junior development is formally included in NCCA’s objectives and committee structure. Matthew Perry currently serves as Junior Organiser.
The association supports youth chess alongside the work of local clubs, schools, and junior organizations. Safeguarding and anti-bullying standards follow the policies of the English Chess Federation.
NCCA also selects representative county teams for regional and national competition. Antony Hall is the current First Team Captain, while David Payne manages the U1850 team.
County teams compete through the East Anglian structure and can progress to national ECF county stages. This representative chess provides an important link between Norfolk club competition and competition against other English counties.
🏛️ Leadership and Administration
The current NCCA committee is headed by Chairman John Wickham, with Brian Cunningham as Vice-Chairman.
Alan Page serves as Secretary, Andy Hartland as Treasurer, Stephen Livermore as League and Cup Controller, and Jeff Dawson as Trophies Officer.
John Wickham also acts as Competitions & Events Organiser and represents Norfolk in ECF and EACU matters. His long service to chess in the county was formally recognized when the association introduced the John Wickham Trophy for the winners of Norfolk League Division 1.
Through this committee structure, NCCA coordinates club chess, tournaments, junior development, county teams, safeguarding, and relations with the wider English chess system.
