19th Salzkammergut Schachopen 2027 takes place from May 14 to May 17, 2027 in Bad Ischl, Austria. The traditional Whitsun chess festival is organized by Schachklub Bad Ischl and is played at the Kongress & TheaterHaus in the heart of the Salzkammergut region.

After attracting a record 273 players in 2026, the tournament returns with five rating groups, 27 cash prizes and both national and international rating opportunities. All sections play five classical Swiss-system rounds with the same time control.

The festival accommodates a wide range of playing strengths. The A Tournament is open to everyone, while Groups B–E provide rating-limited sections down to players below 1500 national Elo or DWZ.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

All five sections use the same classical time control and schedule.

⏱️ Time control 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game

Groups A, B, C and D are submitted for FIDE rating. All five groups are evaluated for Austrian national Elo and DWZ.

Players participating in Groups A–D must have a valid FIDE ID before the tournament begins. The organizer can assist players who need help obtaining one.

Half-Point Bye

Each player may take one half-point bye during Rounds 1–4.

The request must reach the Chief Arbiter before the relevant round is paired.

A Round 1 bye is only available if the entry fee has been transferred in advance by May 7, 2027, and the organizer has confirmed the bye by email.

🏆 Prize Fund

The detailed official regulations list 27 cash prizes totaling €3,250 (approximately $3,780). The prizes are guaranteed if the tournament reaches at least 200 participants.

If players tie for first place, the first prize is divided according to the Hort system. Other main prizes and category prizes are not shared.

Prize money is paid personally at the award ceremony. A prizewinner who does not attend the ceremony forfeits the prize.

For Groups A–D, the international FIDE rating determines the starting rank and rating-category eligibility. In Group E, the player’s national rating from their home federation is used.

Players without a national rating or FIDE Elo may only enter Groups B–E, or qualify for category prizes there, with permission from the Chief Arbiter.

Advance payment of the entry fee is recommended and should ideally be completed no later than one week before the tournament. Players expecting to arrive close to the Friday registration deadline are especially encouraged to pay in advance.

The Kongress & TheaterHaus is located directly in the centre of Bad Ischl, beside the historic Kurpark. The building combines its historic exterior with modern and air-conditioned event facilities.

The organizer specifically highlights the air-conditioned playing conditions, an important feature for a tournament expected to attract several hundred participants.

The venue is within walking distance of central Bad Ischl’s hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions.

🚆 How to Get There

🚆 By Train

Bad Ischl railway station is on the Salzkammergut railway line.

From Vienna and Linz, travellers can travel via Attnang-Puchheim and change there for Bad Ischl.

From the Salzburg direction, Bad Ischl can also be reached by regional public transport connections.

🚗 By Car

From Vienna or Linz, use the A1 motorway to Regau, followed by the B145 toward Bad Ischl.

From Salzburg or Munich, the venue recommends the A1 to Thalgau, followed by the B158 toward Bad Ischl.

Approximately 150 parking spaces are available directly at the Kongress & TheaterHaus.

✈️ By Air

Salzburg Airport is approximately 60 km from Bad Ischl and is the most convenient major airport for many international participants.

ℹ️ Other Information

The Salzkammergut Schachopen is held over the Whitsun weekend and has developed into one of the region’s established multi-section chess festivals.

The 2026 edition attracted a tournament-record 273 participants. For 2027, the organizer again offers five playing groups and category prizes in every section.

📱 Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices

Players may bring mobile phones, smartwatches and other communication devices into the tournament hall, provided that they are completely switched off.

A switched-on mobile phone results in immediate loss of the game. Storage boxes are available at the venue for electronic devices.

⚡ Blitz Side Event

A FIDE-rated Blitz Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 at 18:30.

The evening programme also includes a hobby competition for players rated below 1800 FIDE Elo.
