1. Schachklub Bad Ischl 1936 (SK Bad Ischl) is a chess club based in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria, Austria. Founded in 1936, the club represents organized chess in the historic spa town and the wider Salzkammergut region. It is affiliated with the Schach Landesverband Oberösterreich and the Austrian chess structure. Alongside regular club competition, SK Bad Ischl has developed a strong reputation as a tournament organizer, particularly through its long-running Pentecost chess festival.

The club’s principal activities include classical chess, rapid chess, youth tournaments, regional competition, and tournament organization. Its flagship event is the Internationales Salzkammergut Schachopen, which attracts players from Austria and numerous other federations each year. In addition, SK Bad Ischl organizes the Bad Ischler Schnellschachcup and an annual Bad Ischler Jugendturnier, giving both experienced players and young competitors opportunities to play rated chess in Bad Ischl.

Wolfgang Schilcher is the current official club contact listed by the Upper Austrian Chess Federation, while IO/IA Daniel Lieb leads the club’s major tournament organization and is the most useful contact for its open events. Together with Johannes Holzbauer and other volunteers, they form the core organizational team behind the Salzkammergut Open. The club’s 2026 season has been particularly successful: the 18th Salzkammergut Schachopen attracted a record 273 participants, while the next events are the 5th Bad Ischler Schnellschachcup on September 5, 2026 and the Bad Ischler Jugendturnier on September 6, 2026.

📜 History and Chess in Bad Ischl

The club was founded in 1936, although organized chess in Bad Ischl has roots reaching back to the era when the town served as an important imperial summer destination. Over the decades, SK Bad Ischl became part of the regional chess structure of Upper Austria and maintained connections with neighboring chess communities in the Salzkammergut and Salzburg regions.

Tournament organization eventually became one of the club’s defining activities. The modern Salzkammergut Open began in 2008 and developed into an annual Pentecost tradition in Bad Ischl.

The club relies strongly on volunteer organization. Wolfgang Schilcher, Johannes Holzbauer, Daniel Lieb, and other long-standing members have contributed to tournament administration, arbiting, player communication, and local coordination for many years.

🏆 Internationales Salzkammergut Schachopen

The Internationales Salzkammergut Schachopen is SK Bad Ischl’s flagship tournament and one of the largest recurring classical opens in Upper Austria.

The 17th edition in 2025 attracted a then-record 256 players from 18 nations. The event also marked a return to the Kongress- und Theaterhaus Bad Ischl, which provides a large, modern playing hall in the center of the city.

The tournament grew again in 2026. The 18th Salzkammergut Schachopen, held from May 22–25, 2026, attracted 273 participants, setting another attendance record. Competition was divided into five rating groups: A Open, B U2100, C U1900, D U1700, and E U1500.

All groups played five Swiss-system rounds. The standard time control was 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes, with a 30-second increment from move one. Groups A through D received FIDE rating, while all sections were submitted for Austrian national rating.

Julian Jetzl won the 2026 A-Tournament with 4.5/5, finishing ahead of German FM Luca Englert on tiebreak. The next Salzkammergut Open is already scheduled for May 14–17, 2027.

⚡ Rapid Chess and Bad Ischler Schachherbst

SK Bad Ischl has also established the first weekend of September as a second major tournament date.

The 5th Bad Ischler Schnellschachcup is scheduled for September 5, 2026 at the Sparkassensaal Bad Ischl. The tournament will consist of seven Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move.

The event is open to players with a FIDE ID and is submitted for both FIDE Rapid and Austrian Rapid rating. A prize fund with nine cash prizes is available, including €100 for first place.

The rapid tournament follows a successful 2025 edition that attracted 60 players. Therefore, the September weekend has developed into a regular season-opening competition alongside the larger Pentecost classical festival.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth chess is an important part of SK Bad Ischl’s current activity. The club organizes a dedicated Bad Ischler Jugendturnier each September and supports young players entering rated tournament chess.

The 2026 youth tournament is scheduled for September 6, one day after the rapid event. It is open to U18 players rated below 1800 and consists of five nationally rated classical games.

Each player receives 60 minutes per game, making the tournament particularly suitable for juniors gaining their first experience with notation, tournament rules, and longer time controls.

The 2025 edition attracted almost 30 young players from several Austrian regions. The tournament awarded separate age-category prizes from U8 through U18, demonstrating the club’s commitment to providing competition for different stages of junior development.

🏛️ Tournament Organization

IO Daniel Lieb serves as Tournament Director for the Salzkammergut Open and the club’s other major public competitions. He is also an International Arbiter and regularly performs the role of Chief Arbiter.

The Salzkammergut Open organizational team also includes Johannes Holzbauer, Wolfgang Schilcher, and Hans Reisner, supported by additional club volunteers. IA Armin Baumgartner, FA Johann Webersberger, and ÖS Helmut Flatz have been among the arbiters involved in recent editions.

This stable organizational structure has allowed SK Bad Ischl to expand its major open while also maintaining rapid and youth events throughout the year.
