♟️ About Day & Knight Chess Club

Day & Knight Chess Club is a nonprofit chess organization based in Corona, California, serving players and schools across Southern California’s Inland Empire. The club combines chess education, scholastic programs, US Chess- and FIDE-rated tournaments, regular competitive play, camps, community events, and online learning. Moreover, it operates a dedicated chess academy where beginners and experienced tournament players can train throughout the year.

Edwin Christopher Ruiz founded Day & Knight Chess Club in 2022. Before establishing the organization, Ruiz taught chess and served as President of the chess clubs at both Norco College and Cal Poly Pomona. He created Day & Knight to expand access to structured chess education and organized competition, particularly for young players. The organization subsequently received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and has grown rapidly through partnerships with schools and local communities.

Ruiz remains the club’s Founder and President. The current officer team also includes Ricardo Silguero as Vice President, John Wahhab as Treasurer, and Miriam Ruiz as Secretary. In addition, Day & Knight maintains a wider Board of Directors that supports education, fundraising, operations, and community development.

🎓 Chess Academy and Player Development

The Day & Knight Chess Academy provides structured instruction for several different playing levels. Its current curriculum divides students into four development groups: Pawn, Knight, Bishop, and Rook Divisions.

The Pawn Division introduces new players to chess fundamentals. Meanwhile, the Knight Division develops tactical awareness and pattern recognition. Bishop students move toward deeper strategic planning, while the Rook Division prepares established competitors for serious tournament play, including openings, middlegames, endgames, and practical decision-making under time pressure.

The club’s coaching team includes National Masters, FIDE-rated competitors, and experienced instructors. Moreover, programs serve both children and adults, with weekday and weekend instruction available.

Day & Knight also operates regular Friday Rated Play, giving members opportunities to play serious US Chess-rated games outside larger weekend tournaments. Casual chess and social events complement those competitions, allowing developing players to gain experience before entering rated events.

This progression connects instruction directly with competition. Therefore, a beginner can start in the academy, develop through progressively stronger groups, play regular club games, and ultimately enter US Chess- and FIDE-rated tournaments organized by Day & Knight.

🧒 School Chess and Scholastic Development

School chess is one of Day & Knight Chess Club’s largest programs. The organization currently reports serving more than 10,000 students across over 100 school sites and more than 10 school districts.

Its after-school program normally uses a five-week curriculum. Weekly sessions combine instruction, puzzles, guided practice, and practical games. In addition, each session can conclude with an on-site tournament so students can apply what they have learned in competition.

The program primarily serves students from first through eighth grade, although the organization also works with homeschool groups, charter programs, and other educational partners. No previous chess experience is required.

Day & Knight also participates in California’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P). Through these partnerships, the club provides chess instructors, curriculum, attendance tracking, and program administration for participating schools and districts.

The organization has also sponsored US Chess memberships for young players and developed inter-school tournament opportunities. Consequently, students can move from an after-school introduction into rated chess without needing to find an entirely separate organization.

🏆 US Chess and FIDE-Rated Tournaments

Tournament organization has become another major part of Day & Knight Chess Club’s activity. The club runs regular rated opens in Southern California, often providing several rating sections so that beginners, developing players, and experienced competitors can participate in the same event.

Its 2026 calendar includes the Day & Knight April Open, May Open, June Open, August Open, and September Open, together with weekly rated play and larger festival-style competitions.

Several events include a FIDE-rated Open section alongside US Chess-rated lower sections. For example, the September 2026 Open offers an FIDE Classical-rated top section and separate U1600, U1200, and U800 groups. This structure allows new tournament players to enter an appropriate section while stronger competitors pursue national and international ratings.

Day & Knight frequently works with experienced Tournament Director Jake Nemeth of Judgement Day Chess Club for pairings and tournament administration. Meanwhile, Edwin Ruiz remains the principal organizational contact.

The club also uses tournaments to reduce barriers to competition. Some events have offered free or discounted entry, complimentary meals, trophies, raffles, and reduced rates for Day & Knight members.

🌟 Pacific Southwest Open

The Pacific Southwest Open represents Day & Knight Chess Club’s largest tournament project to date.

Day & Knight organized the 2026 Pacific Southwest Open from July 3–5 at the Riverside Convention Center in Riverside, California. The event expanded the club’s tournament operations from regular local opens into a major multi-day competition.

The tournament attracted more than 250 participants and distributed approximately $15,000 in cash prizes. In addition, the weekend included a US Chess- and FIDE-rated blitz tournament, a Grandmaster lecture, complimentary refreshments, player activities, and live tournament services.

Jake Nemeth served as Chief Tournament Director, while Edwin Ruiz and Day & Knight Chess Club handled the main organizational role.

The Pacific Southwest Open also demonstrated the club’s capacity to organize tournaments outside its home venue in Corona. Moreover, Day & Knight has already announced plans to continue the tournament in 2027, making it a developing flagship event within the organization’s competitive program.

🤝 Community Chess in Southern California

Day & Knight Chess Club combines structured training with accessible community chess. Its main base is in Corona, while its school programs and events extend into communities across the Inland Empire and other parts of Southern California.

The club has organized free casual-play sessions, community chess nights, and social events such as Tacos & Chess. In addition, it has worked with libraries, schools, educational programs, and local organizations to create additional playing opportunities.

The club’s permanent Corona location also supports camps and intensive training. Summer chess camps combine lessons, tournament games, tactical work, and other activities for school-age players.

Day & Knight maintains an active online community as well. Its Chess.com club hosts players from different locations, while free online resources help beginners start learning before joining in-person programs.

This combination of school programs, academy instruction, community events, weekly rated chess, and larger FIDE tournaments gives Day & Knight Chess Club a broad role in Southern California chess. Although the organization began only in 2022, it has already developed from a scholastic initiative into a multi-program nonprofit chess organization.
