♟️ About Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese

Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese (CSB) is a historic chess association based in Bologna, Italy. Its formal sporting identity is A.S.D. Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese, and the club is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) under ID 5004. CSB provides competitive chess, FIDE-rated tournaments, team competition, junior development, adult instruction, school chess, and regular social play.

The club traces its history to 1874, giving organized chess at CSB a tradition of more than 150 years. The present amateur sports association also appears in Italy’s national sports register, where its current legal structure has been registered since June 8, 2011. Today, the association operates from its established venue at Viale Felsina 52 in Bologna.

Giulio Michele Calavalle currently serves as President and legal representative of Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese. He is a FIDE Master and an FSI Head Tutor/Instructor. Moreover, he has substantial experience in chess administration: after serving three terms as President of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Committee, he was elected to the FSI Federal Council for the 2025–2028 term. Calavalle remains directly involved in CSB tournaments, training, and team competition.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team chess is one of the strongest parts of the modern CSB program. The association fields an unusually large number of squads across the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS) system, which allows players of different strengths to compete under the same club identity.

In 2026, CSB entered teams at every major level of the national structure. Two squads, CSB PRO and CSB 1874 PRO, competed in Serie A1 and both retained their places. Meanwhile, CSB 1874 won promotion from Serie A2 to Serie A1.

The club also fielded three teams in Serie B and four in Serie C. CSB OLD STYLE earned promotion to Serie A2, while CSB BLACK BOYS won promotion from Serie C. In addition, CSB STRANGER THINK won its Promozione group and moved up to Serie C.

CSB also maintained a team in the national Master competition. Therefore, the association combines high-level national chess with a deep competitive structure that gives many members access to official team play.

🧒 Junior Chess and National Success

Junior development represents another major area of CSB activity. The club organizes structured courses, provincial and regional qualifying events, summer programs, and team competition for young players.

Tosca Proietti Tocca directs the club’s youth sector, while CSB maintains a wider instructional team that includes FSI-qualified coaches and experienced competitive players. Current courses cover children and teenagers as well as adults at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.

The club’s youth program achieved exceptional results at the 2025 Italian U18 Team Championship in Lignano Sabbiadoro. CSB entered 10 teams, more than any other participating club, with at least one team represented in every age competition.

CSB won the Italian U8 team title with C.S. Bolognese Cincinnati Blitz and the Italian U10 team title with C.S. Bolognese Denver Blitz. In addition, its girls’ teams won the female classifications in the U12 and U14 categories.

Several CSB players also achieved best-board results. This success demonstrates a clear development pathway from introductory courses and local junior competitions to national championship chess.

The club continues that work in 2026 through the Campionato Giovanile Individuale U18, the CERG youth circuit, Saturday junior courses, and other federation-rated competitions.

🎓 Chess Training and Community Programs

CSB provides structured chess instruction throughout the year. Its current teaching staff covers players from first-time beginners to experienced competitors preparing for federation tournaments.

Adult courses include separate beginner, intermediate, and advanced programs. Meanwhile, junior instruction gives younger players a regular weekly training schedule and access to tournament preparation.

The association also runs the Stage della Mente, a summer program built around chess, logic, and related activities. The 2026 edition ran across several summer weeks and separated participants into beginner and advanced groups. Stronger national-category players received targeted preparation for upcoming competitive events.

Outside its headquarters, CSB brings chess into public spaces as well. The Scacchi sotto le Stelle summer program in Piazza Aldrovandi combines free public chess with evening tournaments. Moreover, the club participates in community initiatives and sporting events around Bologna.

This mix of formal instruction and accessible public chess allows the association to serve both competitive players and people encountering the game for the first time.

🏆 Tournament Organization

Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese maintains a particularly dense tournament calendar. Its program covers Standard, Rapid, and Blitz chess and includes both club-level competitions and major federation championships.

In 2026, CSB organized the Bologna Provincial Championship, the Emilia-Romagna Regional Championship, provincial junior championships, FIDE-rated Rapid and Blitz events, Under-1800 competitions, and recurring seasonal opens.

Its tournament series includes the Torneo d’Inverno, Torneo di Primavera, Torneo d’Autunno, and Campionato Rapid Bolognese. Moreover, the club organizes international weekend events outside Bologna, including tournaments in Imola and Castel del Rio.

For example, the 5° Torneo Internazionale Hotel Donatello Imola took place in December 2025. Meanwhile, the Castel del Rio series reached its third edition in November 2025 before returning for a substantially expanded fourth tournament in 2026.

Therefore, CSB functions not only as a local chess club but also as an experienced tournament organizer serving Bologna and the wider Emilia-Romagna chess community.

🌟 4° Torneo Internazionale Castel del Rio 2026

Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese organizes the 4° Torneo Internazionale Castel del Rio from November 6–8, 2026 at the historic Palazzo Alidosi, Via Montanara 1, Castel del Rio.

The 2026 tournament consists of three sections. Open A is designed for players above 1899 Elo, Open B covers the 1600–1949 range, and Open C is for players below 1650. The organizers cap total participation at 100 players.

All three sections use a five-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the organizers plan to transmit at least 12 games online during the event.

The fourth edition carries a substantially increased €7,000 total prize fund. Open A offers €1,250 plus a trophy for first place, while Open B awards €600 to its winner and Open C awards €400. Additional prizes cover rating groups, juniors, women, and players over 60.

Registration and payments run directly through Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese. In addition, the official regulations publish Giulio Calavalle and Roberto Vuilleumier as the tournament contacts.

The Municipality of Castel del Rio and the Palazzo Alidosi setting give the tournament a distinctive local identity. However, Circolo Scacchistico Bolognese remains the actual chess organizer, continuing the same organizational role it held for the third edition in 2025.
