♟️ About Eurode Open Organizing Committee

The Eurode Open Organizing Committee is a cross-border chess partnership that organizes the annual Eurode Open in the Dutch-German border region around Kerkrade and Herzogenrath. Rather than operating as a single chess club, the committee brings together Stichting Eurode 2000+, Schaak Vereniging Kerkrade (SV Kerkrade), Schachgesellschaft Kohlscheid (SG Kohlscheid), and Schachverein 1949 Herzogenrath (SV Herzogenrath).

The partnership launched the first Eurode chess tournament in 2012 at Rolduc in Kerkrade. From the beginning, Dutch and German organizers worked together on the competition. Moreover, the event included a separate youth tournament, creating opportunities for both adult and junior players from the border region.

The tournament reflects the wider purpose of Eurode cooperation between Kerkrade and Herzogenrath. Stichting Eurode 2000+ supports activities that strengthen contact across the Netherlands-Germany border, while the three participating chess clubs contribute tournament expertise and local chess networks. Consequently, the Eurode Open combines competitive chess with a clear cross-border community character.

Oliver Schreyer serves as the principal public contact for the Eurode Open 2026. The Royal Dutch Chess Federation lists him as the organizer for both the main tournament and the accompanying youth competition. He is also a long-standing member of Schachverein 1949 Herzogenrath and contributes to its tournament, youth, and organizational activities.

🏆 Eurode Open and Competitive Activity

The Eurode Open is the committee’s principal recurring chess tournament. The competition reaches its 13th edition in 2026 and takes place on October 10 at FLEXIFORUM in Kerkrade.

The main tournament uses nine Swiss-system rapid rounds with a time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move. The organizers limit the 2026 field to 100 players. In addition, participants compete for overall prizes and awards across several rating groups.

The tournament attracts players from both the Netherlands and Germany, as well as competitors from elsewhere in the region. This international participation directly reflects the event’s cross-border structure.

Participation has also grown over the years. The 11th Eurode Open in 2023 attracted 131 players across the senior and youth tournaments, setting a participation record at that time. Therefore, the event has developed from a regional cooperation project into an established annual rapid tournament.

🧒 Eurode Open Youth Tournament

Youth chess has formed part of the Eurode concept since the inaugural tournament. The committee runs a dedicated Eurode Open Youth Tournament alongside the main rapid event.

For 2026, the youth competition uses the same rapid time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move and nine Swiss rounds. Players compete in one field, while the organizers award prizes separately in the U12 and U16 age categories.

The youth tournament accepts up to 40 players. Moreover, the entry structure keeps participation accessible and includes refreshments for competitors.

Schachverein Herzogenrath plays a particularly active role in the youth section. The club has a long-standing junior chess program, and Oliver Schreyer has helped organize Eurode youth competitions since the earliest editions. As a result, the youth event combines international participation with experienced local tournament management.

🌍 Cross-Border Chess and Eurode Cooperation

The Eurode Open is distinctive because its organizational structure crosses a national border. SV Kerkrade represents the Dutch side, while SG Kohlscheid and SV Herzogenrath represent the German side. Stichting Eurode 2000+ provides the broader Eurode connection.

Kerkrade and Herzogenrath share a particularly close cross-border relationship. The neighboring communities cooperate under the Eurode framework, and Stichting Eurode 2000+ supports projects that encourage residents on both sides to meet and work together.

Chess provides a natural platform for this cooperation. Players can compete under the same tournament rules regardless of whether they normally use a Dutch KNSB rating, a German DWZ, or an international Elo rating. Therefore, the Eurode Open uses a combined TWZ rating concept, taking the highest available rating when allocating rating-group prizes.

This approach supports the tournament’s central principle: players from different chess systems and neighboring countries meet in one competition.

🤝 Partner Chess Clubs

Schaak Vereniging Kerkrade provides an important operational base for the Eurode Open. The tournament’s principal website and historical event archive are hosted through the Kerkrade club, which also publishes results, photographs, and tournament information.

Schachverein 1949 Herzogenrath contributes tournament administration and youth organization. Furthermore, the club manages the official Eurode Open contact email for the 2026 edition and receives tournament entry payments.

Schachgesellschaft Kohlscheid completes the three-club chess partnership. Together with Stichting Eurode 2000+, these organizations have maintained the Eurode Open concept since its first edition.

The partnership allows each organization to contribute its own experience while keeping the tournament genuinely international. Consequently, the Eurode Open does not function as the event of only one local club.
