A.S.D. Circolo Scacchistico Ippogrifo is a chess club based in Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The club affiliates with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) under club ID 5021. Its headquarters are at Centro Sociale Venezia, Via Cesare Lombroso 3, where members meet for tournament play, training, junior activities, and recreational chess.

The club has deep roots in the chess history of Reggio Emilia. Among the distinguished players associated with Ippogrifo was Enrico Paoli, multiple Italian Champion, chess author, and creator of the celebrated Torneo Internazionale di Capodanno. During the 1990s, Ippogrifo increasingly contributed to the organization of that historic international tournament and eventually assumed its complete management.

Another major milestone came in 2000, when Ippogrifo won the Italian Team Championship during the Final Four in Potenza. The club has continued to compete across the Italian team structure ever since. Moreover, it combines this competitive tradition with a strong commitment to junior chess and local tournament development.

Giuseppe “Silvano” Ferraroni serves as President of A.S.D. Circolo Scacchistico Ippogrifo. He has been a central figure in Reggio Emilia chess for many years and remains directly involved in club tournaments, team competition, youth programs, and community chess projects.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Ippogrifo maintains an increasingly active tournament calendar in Reggio Emilia and the surrounding province. During the 2025 season alone, the club organized 11 chess events, compared with five during the previous year.

Its program includes the Campionato Provinciale Giovanile, provincial championship events, rated competitions, rapid tournaments, and the Week-end Città del Tricolore – Memorial Renato “Franz” Franzoni. In 2026, the latter reached its fourth edition and offered separate rating sections together with a substantial prize fund.

The club has also developed the Ippogrifo Under 1800 series. The May 2026 edition attracted more than 50 players for a five-round rated competition at Centro Sociale Venezia. Consequently, developing tournament players receive additional opportunities to compete against opponents within a suitable rating range.

Furthermore, the club organizes friendly and community competitions in cooperation with libraries, schools, ARCI clubs, and other local organizations. This approach extends its tournament activity beyond the traditional chess-club setting.

⚡ Terre Matildiche and Rapid Chess

A.S.D. Circolo Scacchistico Ippogrifo organizes the Torneo Semilampo delle Terre Matildiche in Votigno di Canossa, a medieval village in the hills of Reggio Emilia.

The competition takes place at the Casa del Tibet in Votigno and combines rapid chess with a distinctive historical setting. The third edition in 2025 attracted 36 participants.

The 4° Torneo Semilampo delle Terre Matildiche takes place on October 4, 2026. Players compete over nine Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 12 minutes plus three seconds per move. Moreover, the tournament welcomes players without requiring an FSI membership card.

The recurring Terre Matildiche event illustrates Ippogrifo’s broader strategy of bringing chess to different locations across the province. Therefore, the club complements its regular Reggio Emilia program with tournaments in culturally distinctive venues outside the city.

♜ Team Chess and National Competition

Team chess remains an important part of Ippogrifo’s competitive identity. The club’s historical high point came with its Italian national team title in 2000, while current teams continue to participate in several divisions of the Campionato Italiano a Squadre.

In 2026, Ippogrifo involved 54 players across eight teams. Its strongest formation, Istituto Stampa, finished third in its Serie B group and retained its place in the division. Meanwhile, Scacchi Corsari secured its Serie C status.

The club also entered five teams in the Promozione division: Ippogrifo, Ippogrifo Boscaiolo, Ippogrifo Kids, Ippogrifo Pro e Contro, and Ippogrifo Young. Consequently, established competitors, new members, and juniors all received opportunities to gain team-match experience.

This broad participation forms an important part of the club’s development model. Rather than concentrating competitive chess in a single team, Ippogrifo uses several squads to involve a much larger section of its membership.

🎓 Chess School and Youth Development

Youth chess is one of Ippogrifo’s principal activities. The club provides instruction for children and teenagers at its Reggio Emilia headquarters and also works with local schools.

Its chess school offers different training levels. The club has separated younger and older students into dedicated groups and uses demonstration equipment and digital teaching resources during lessons. Gabriele Codazzi coordinates the training program with support from a wider group of instructors, volunteers, and parents.

The results of this work are visible in membership growth. During 2025, Ippogrifo increased from 67 to 117 registered members, with 35 new junior memberships accounting for a large part of that expansion.

In addition, the club organizes the Reggio Emilia Provincial Youth Championship, school team events, and competitions involving players from neighboring areas. Young members can therefore progress from introductory lessons to individual tournaments and eventually to formal team competition.

🤝 Chess in Reggio Emilia and Community Activity

Ippogrifo works with schools, libraries, community centers, and other organizations across Reggio Emilia province. For example, the club has collaborated with Biblioteca Panizzi on chess activities for young people and has supported educational projects that introduce chess in schools.

Its regular headquarters at Centro Sociale Venezia provide a permanent meeting point for the local chess community. Members gather during the week for instruction, tournaments, game analysis, free play, and club activities.

At the same time, Ippogrifo continues the broader chess tradition associated with Reggio Emilia. Its connection with the historic Torneo Internazionale di Capodanno, its Italian team championship title, and its current growth in youth and tournament activity link the city’s chess heritage with a new generation of players.
