Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais is an active chess club based in Fouesnant, Finistère, Brittany, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code F29044. It welcomes adults and children from the age of six and combines tournament chess, training, recreational play, junior development, team competition, and school chess.

The club currently has 72 Licence A and 75 Licence B members, according to the FFE. 🏆 Open International du Pays Fouesnantais

Tournament organization represents an important part of the club’s annual program. Its principal classical event is the Open International du Pays Fouesnantais, which brings FIDE-rated chess to Fouesnant during the autumn school holidays.

The 2026 Open International takes place from October 24–28 at the Pôle Associatif de Kerourgué. The organizer runs two FIDE-rated tournaments in parallel. Open A is aimed primarily at players above 1500 Elo, while Open B serves players below 1600.

Both competitions use seven Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the main tournament accommodates up to 100 players, while Open B has space for another 50 participants.

Twenty-nine members of the host club competed in that edition. The main tournament was joined by separate youth sections, which gave younger and less experienced competitors appropriate playing opportunities.

In addition, the club has developed a FIDE-rated blitz series. The 2nd Fouesnant Blitz Tournament takes place on August 30, 2026. It features a principal open tournament and a separate youth competition for U8, U10, and U12 players.

🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development

Youth development is one of the club’s strongest areas of activity. Weekly training includes dedicated Wednesday lessons, Saturday groups for different playing levels, and a competition-focused session.

Andrew Baudon also leads intensive training camps during school holidays. The August 2026 course covers openings, strategic structures, tactical work, game understanding, and historical chess themes. Moreover, the club limits these sessions to small groups so that players receive focused instruction.

Competitive results reflect this investment. In March 2026, the club reported that its junior team earned promotion to Nationale II Jeunes for the 2026/27 season. Fouesnant had not placed a team at that level since 2002.

The club also supports young players at regional and national events. In July 2026, 17 Fouesnant players competed at the Saint-Lô festival. Therefore, junior development extends from weekly lessons to major multi-day tournaments.
