♟️ About Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais
Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais is an active chess club based in Fouesnant, Finistère, Brittany, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code F29044. It welcomes adults and children from the age of six and combines tournament chess, training, recreational play, junior development, team competition, and school chess. The club currently has 72 Licence A and 75 Licence B members, according to the FFE. Its principal playing venue is the Pôle Associatif de Kerourgué, where chess activities take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Moreover, the club provides both structured lessons and free-play sessions, allowing beginners and experienced tournament players to participate within the same organization. Frédéric Martin currently serves as President and principal public contact of Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais. In addition, Andrew Baudon leads much of the club’s training program. Baudon holds the DEFFE 1 coaching qualification from the French Chess Federation and works extensively with both junior and competitive players.🏆 Open International du Pays Fouesnantais
Tournament organization represents an important part of the club’s annual program. Its principal classical event is the Open International du Pays Fouesnantais, which brings FIDE-rated chess to Fouesnant during the autumn school holidays. The 2026 Open International takes place from October 24–28 at the Pôle Associatif de Kerourgué. The organizer runs two FIDE-rated tournaments in parallel. Open A is aimed primarily at players above 1500 Elo, while Open B serves players below 1600. Both competitions use seven Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the main tournament accommodates up to 100 players, while Open B has space for another 50 participants. The club also adds social activities around the chess program. The 2026 edition includes a blitz evening, board-game activities, catering, and accommodation partnerships. Therefore, the event combines serious rated competition with a broader chess-festival atmosphere.⚡ Rapid and Blitz Chess
Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais also maintains a long-running rapid tournament tradition. The 27th Fouesnant Rapid Tournament took place in June 2026 and attracted 96 players across three sections. Twenty-nine members of the host club competed in that edition. The main tournament was joined by separate youth sections, which gave younger and less experienced competitors appropriate playing opportunities. In addition, the club has developed a FIDE-rated blitz series. The 2nd Fouesnant Blitz Tournament takes place on August 30, 2026. It features a principal open tournament and a separate youth competition for U8, U10, and U12 players. Consequently, the club now offers rated competition across classical, rapid, and blitz formats during the year.🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development
Youth development is one of the club’s strongest areas of activity. Weekly training includes dedicated Wednesday lessons, Saturday groups for different playing levels, and a competition-focused session. Andrew Baudon also leads intensive training camps during school holidays. The August 2026 course covers openings, strategic structures, tactical work, game understanding, and historical chess themes. Moreover, the club limits these sessions to small groups so that players receive focused instruction. Competitive results reflect this investment. In March 2026, the club reported that its junior team earned promotion to Nationale II Jeunes for the 2026/27 season. Fouesnant had not placed a team at that level since 2002. The club also supports young players at regional and national events. In July 2026, 17 Fouesnant players competed at the Saint-Lô festival. Therefore, junior development extends from weekly lessons to major multi-day tournaments.♜ Team Chess and Club Life
The FFE currently lists Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais in Nationale 4 adult team competition. The club also fields additional teams at departmental level, giving members several routes into official interclub chess. Regular club activity complements these competitions. Adults can attend free-play sessions on Monday afternoons, while Monday evenings focus more strongly on competitive players. Wednesday and Saturday sessions provide additional opportunities for games and training. Furthermore, the club maintains a substantial chess library for members. Players can use books and instructional material alongside coached lessons and practical play. The Pôle Associatif de Kerourgué is accessible to people with reduced mobility. As a result, the club combines federation competition with an accessible local chess environment for players of different ages and levels.🤝 Chess in Fouesnant and Community Activity
Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais works closely with the local chess community and the Municipality of Fouesnant. The municipality provides facilities for major events, while club volunteers handle tournament preparation, catering, player reception, and other practical responsibilities. The club has also hosted Finistère youth competitions and other departmental events. In addition, its activities have included school chess and cooperation with the Comité Départemental des Échecs du Finistère. Moreover, the club participates in Fouesnant’s annual associations forum and uses its website and Facebook page to promote local chess activity. This combination of tournaments, training, youth development, and community involvement gives Échiquier du Pays Fouesnantais a broad role in chess across the Pays Fouesnantais.
