Rating, Pairing & Section Rules
Charlotte Chess Center uses the October 2026 US Chess rating supplement for most players. When a player would otherwise be unrated, the organizer may use the player’s most recent live US Chess tournament-history rating. For section eligibility, the organizer also honors a player’s peak rating since September 1 under the published play-up rules.
A 100-point play-up rule applies. For example, a player rated 1800 or higher may enter the Championship section even though the nominal lower section boundary is 1900. Players who choose a section for which they are not eligible are moved to the appropriate group before the tournament.
Foreign FIDE-rated players without a meaningful US Chess rating history may receive an assigned US Chess rating. For FIDE ratings of 2000 and above, the organizer publishes the formula 1.02 × FIDE + 20; players below 2000 are generally assigned at par unless another recognized federation rating provides a better basis. The Chief Tournament Director retains discretion in exceptional cases.
| Rating Situation | Published Treatment |
|---|---|
| Most US Chess players | October 2026 US Chess supplement |
| Otherwise unrated US Chess player | Most recent live tournament-history rating may be used |
| Play-up using recent live rating | Live rating may establish eligibility under the 100-point rule |
| Peak since September 1 | Peak establishes eligibility; assigned tournament rating follows the organizer’s stated rule |
| Foreign FIDE 2000+ without US rating | 1.02 × FIDE + 20 may be used |
| Foreign FIDE below 2000 | Generally FIDE at par, subject to available federation data and Chief TD adjustment |
Byes, Withdrawals & Refunds
Players may request up to two optional half-point byes, but half-point requests must be submitted before Round 1. Any bye requested after the tournament has started scores zero points. Changes involving registration, byes, or withdrawal must reach the organizer at least 75 minutes before the affected round.
| Withdrawal Timing | Published Refund |
|---|---|
| By October 17 | Refund less $10 transaction fee |
| October 18–21 | Refund less $20 transaction fee |
| After October 21 until 75 minutes before Round 1 | 50% refund |
| During the event | Withdrawal must be submitted at least 75 minutes before the affected round |
A player who fails to notify the organizer of a withdrawal or zero-point bye and causes a forfeit by no-show can incur a $100 fine. This rule is designed to reduce avoidable empty boards and protect opponents from unnecessary forfeits.
Equipment, Spectators & Playing Conditions
Charlotte Chess Center supplies the boards, pieces, and clocks, and players must use the organizer’s equipment. White’s clock starts at the scheduled round time even when one or both players are not yet seated.
Spectators are not permitted in the playing area or the nearby hallway. By registering for or attending the event, players and guests also grant the organizer permission to use event photographs and video for tournament-related purposes.
