♟️ About Club Ajedrez Alfaro

Club Ajedrez Alfaro is a chess club based in Alfaro, La Rioja, Spain. The club competes within the structure of the Federación Riojana de Ajedrez and organizes classical, rapid, blitz, junior, and international-rated tournaments. In addition, it operates a substantial chess school and promotes chess in several communities across the Ribera del Ebro area.

The club traces its foundation to 1994, when a small group of local chess enthusiasts organized the first Torneo Dalí and created Club Ajedrez Alfaro. In 1995, the association introduced its first Liga Social and Día del Club. Moreover, its tournament program expanded over the following years. The first Torneo de Navidad arrived in 2000, while the Torneo Promesas and the developing chess school followed in 2001.

Rafael Lara Rivas currently serves as President of Club Ajedrez Alfaro. He also remains directly involved in tournament administration and continues to serve as Tournament Director for club events in 2026. The current board also includes Miguel Ángel Felipo as Coordinator and Gonzalo Sáinz as Secretary, alongside several board members and local delegates.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Club Ajedrez Alfaro maintains an unusually broad tournament calendar for a regional chess club. Its program combines long-running local competitions with FIDE-rated international events and tournaments organized in neighboring towns.

The club’s recurring events include the Abierto Absoluto de Alfaro, which reached its 31st edition in 2026, and the Torneo Jóvenes Promesas Luis Lorente, which reached its 25th edition. In addition, the club runs the Torneo de Reyes and Torneo de Navidad, creating a year-round program for members and visiting players.

Its tournament activity also extends beyond Alfaro. In 2026, the club organized the XI Torneo Entreviñas in Aldeanueva de Ebro. Furthermore, it scheduled the XVIII Torneo Relámpago Villa de Cintruénigo, the VII Torneo Villa de Igea, and the VI Torneo Cien Pilares.

These events use different formats and playing speeds. Therefore, players can compete in classical chess, rapid events, blitz competitions, social tournaments, and youth events through the same organization.

🌟 Open Internacional Ciudad de Alfaro

The Open Internacional de Ajedrez “Ciudad de Alfaro” – Trofeo Cigüeña de Plata is the club’s flagship international tournament. Club Ajedrez Alfaro has developed the competition through successive editions while maintaining the Cigüeña de Plata as its principal trophy.

The tournament has grown into a significant gathering for players from La Rioja and other regions of Spain. For example, the 13th edition in 2024 attracted 120 players from four countries, 15 autonomous communities, 25 provinces, and 36 different clubs. That edition also coincided with the club’s 30th-anniversary year.

Club Ajedrez Alfaro organizes the 15th edition from October 9–12, 2026 at the Sala de Exposiciones del Antiguo Ayuntamiento in central Alfaro. The competition accepts players below 2400 and uses a seven-round Swiss system.

Players receive 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, and the tournament counts for both FIDE and FEDA rating. Moreover, the organizers advertise €4,000 in prizes, including €900 and the Cigüeña de Plata trophy for first place.

International Arbiter Diego Lorente Peñalva and National Arbiter Francisco Ródenas García form the published arbitration team. Meanwhile, Club Ajedrez Alfaro handles registration, accommodation assistance, tournament administration, and the competition committee.

The Ayuntamiento de Alfaro provides important institutional support for the tournament and the club. However, Club Ajedrez Alfaro remains the actual chess organizer of the Open.

🎓 Chess School and Player Development

The Escuela de Ajedrez del Club Ajedrez Alfaro forms one of the central pillars of the association. The club has developed the school over many years and uses it to introduce new players to chess while also preparing stronger juniors for regional and national competition.

For the 2026–2027 season, the club offers in-person instruction from qualified chess teachers. Classes cover several ability levels and use small groups. In addition, International Master Pablo Glavina teaches the advanced courses.

The school’s geographic reach extends beyond Alfaro itself. In 2024, the club reported approximately 130 chess-school students across seven towns in the Ribera del Ebro area, together with around 180 club members. Therefore, its development program serves a wider regional community rather than only players living in Alfaro.

Junior tournaments complement the training program. The Abierto Infantil Ribera del Ebro reached its 21st edition during the 2025–2026 season. Meanwhile, the Jóvenes Promesas series gives developing players another long-established competitive opportunity.

The club also works with schools. Its players and coaches have supported chess activity at educational institutions in Alfaro and nearby communities. As a result, the pathway can begin with school chess and continue through club lessons, junior competition, federation events, and senior team chess.

♜ Team Chess and Championship Results

Club Ajedrez Alfaro also has a strong record in team competition. The club has won the La Rioja team championship on several occasions and has represented the region at Spanish national club championships.

In 2024, Alfaro won the top category of the Campeonato de La Rioja por Equipos. The victory earned the club another opportunity to compete at national level.

The club repeated that achievement in 2026. Alfaro finished first in the Primera Categoría of the Campeonato de La Rioja por Equipos, ahead of Lasker, Calahorrano, Gambito Riojano, Loyola Jesuitas, Sociedad Ajedrecística Logroñesa, and Sagasta.

Consequently, Club Ajedrez Alfaro represented La Rioja at the 2026 Spanish Club Championship – Second Division North in Oviedo. The national event ran from August 9–12 and brought together more than 40 teams from across Spain.

Alfaro entered the championship with players including Jarein López Ruiz, Jorge Ruiz González, Mario León Fernández, Tristán Melchor Martínez, José Miguel Gurrea Martínez, and Silvia Serradell Muñoz. The team recorded victories during the tournament against Pablo Morán, Círculo Ferrolano de Ajedrez, and Club Xadrez Mos.

This national participation continues an established pattern. For example, Club Ajedrez Alfaro also represented La Rioja in the Spanish Second Division Championship in Linares in 2021.

🤝 Chess Across La Rioja and the Ribera del Ebro

Club Ajedrez Alfaro has gradually expanded its activities beyond its home city. The association organizes events in Aldeanueva de Ebro, Cintruénigo, Igea, Arnedo, and other communities while working with municipalities, cultural organizations, local businesses, and the regional federation.

The Torneo Entreviñas provides a good example. Club Ajedrez Alfaro organizes the competition in Aldeanueva de Ebro with local support and combines chess with cultural activities. The 2026 edition attracted around 60 players and also counted toward the Circuito Riojano.

Similarly, the Villa de Cintruénigo tournament has developed into a long-running summer blitz event. Meanwhile, the Cien Pilares competition connects chess with local cultural attractions and the Circuito Riojano de la Amistad.

Therefore, the club’s work reaches beyond conventional weekly club chess. Tournament organization, junior instruction, school activities, regional team competition, and community partnerships all form part of its wider role in chess across the Ribera del Ebro.
