♟️ About Club de Ajedrez Bocas Chess

Club de Ajedrez Bocas Chess, also known as Club Academia Bocas Chess, is a nonprofit chess organization in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The project began its educational work in 2020. Later, 25 local community members formalized the club in 2023. The organization operates from the Multicultural International School Dr. Andrés Culiolis Bayard on Isla Colón. Moreover, it holds official recognition from Pandeportes and the Panamanian Chess Federation.

The club promotes chess as both an educational tool and a competitive sport. Its programs help students develop critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Therefore, Bocas Chess focuses on long-term personal development rather than tournament results alone. The organization also works with schools, teachers, volunteers, sponsors, and local businesses throughout the archipelago.

Carlos Cabrera serves as President, while Joel Sanz works as Secretary and Lead Instructor. Elizabeth Lewis serves as Treasurer, and Adira Culiolis represents the host school. In addition, several board members and volunteers support the club’s educational and organizational work. Joel Sanz also holds FIDE qualifications as a National Arbiter, National Instructor, and School Instructor.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Bocas Chess organizes workshops, informal competitions, official tournaments, and community chess events. Moreover, its recognition by the national federation allows it to stage approved competitions. The club also helps young players prepare for regional and national tournaments.

The organization’s leading event is the Bocas Caribbean Open. This international tournament brings rated classical chess to Isla Colón. The 2026 edition features six Swiss-system rounds and FIDE rating calculation. Therefore, local players can compete against visitors from Panama and other countries.

Joel Sanz serves as Tournament Director of the Bocas Caribbean Open. Meanwhile, qualified national and FIDE arbiters supervise the competition. The organizer also publishes schedules, tournament conditions, player lists, and rating information. As a result, participants receive a structured and officially recognized tournament experience.

Bocas Chess also supports students who travel to national competitions. In particular, the organization seeks sponsorship for transportation, accommodation, food, and entry costs. Consequently, talented young players can access events that might otherwise remain beyond their financial reach.

🎓 Chess Education and Community Development

Chess education forms the central part of the club’s mission. Bocas Chess accepts students between eight and eighteen years old. Beginners, intermediate players, and advanced competitors can all join its programs. Moreover, the club offers free public group lessons, online training, and private instruction.

Public classes combine a structured lesson with supervised playing time. Therefore, students can immediately practise the ideas they have learned. More advanced players may also join online sessions focused on competitive improvement. In addition, private lessons provide individual support when instructors are available.

The organization has reached more than 200 students from nine public schools across the Bocas archipelago. It has also welcomed volunteers from several countries. Meanwhile, local workshops have taken chess to island communities such as San Cristóbal, Popa, Tierra Oscura, and Cayo de Agua.

Bocas Chess welcomes local and international volunteers who can assist with lessons, events, photography, administration, and educational projects. Furthermore, the club develops partnerships with schools and businesses. These relationships help keep its public activities accessible. Above all, the organization uses chess to support the future of young people throughout Bocas del Toro.
