♟️ About Club de Ajedrez Bocas Chess
Club de Ajedrez Bocas Chess, also known locally as Club Academia Bocas Chess, is a nonprofit chess and educational organization based on Isla Colón in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Its educational work began in 2020, while the club was formally organized in 2023 by members of the local community. Bocas Chess is registered with the Panamanian Chess Federation and operates from the Multicultural International School Dr. Andrés Culiolis Bayard. The club uses chess primarily as an educational and community-development tool. It provides free public classes, online training, private instruction, informal competitions, and officially rated tournament opportunities. Its programs mainly serve players aged 8–18, although broader community activities welcome chess enthusiasts of different ages. Since 2020, Bocas Chess reports reaching more than 200 students from nine public schools across the Bocas archipelago while also helping talented young players participate in national competitions. Carlos Cabrera serves as President, while Joel Sanz is Secretary and Lead Instructor and acts as the principal tournament contact. Sanz is also Tournament Director of the club’s major current event, the Bocas Caribbean Open 2026, scheduled for September 5–7 on Isla Colón. The six-round classical tournament will be FIDE rated and represents an important step in expanding internationally rated chess opportunities within Bocas del Toro.📜 Development and Community Chess
Bocas Chess began its educational activity in 2020, initially concentrating on introducing chess to young people around the islands of Bocas del Toro. The organization was formally structured in 2023, when 25 members of the local community established the club and elected its leadership. During the same period, it received recognition through Panama’s chess and sports structures. Its work soon expanded beyond Isla Colón. Free introductory workshops reached schools and communities around the archipelago, including San Cristóbal, Tierra Oscura, Popa, Cayo de Agua, and other island locations. The organization also works with local teachers, schools, volunteers, businesses, and sponsors. International volunteers have supported chess lessons and community activities, helping the club maintain programs across an area where transportation between communities can be challenging.🎓 Chess Education and Youth Development
Education remains the central activity of Bocas Chess. The club accepts students with beginner, intermediate, or advanced chess experience and provides different training options according to their level. Public group lessons are offered free of charge. Students receive structured instruction followed by supervised playing time, allowing them to apply new ideas immediately. More advanced players can also participate in online group training and, when instructors are available, individual lessons. The club currently holds regular activities at Colegio Rogelio Josué Ibarra, the Multicultural International School, and Escuela Carenero. Consequently, students on both Isla Colón and Isla Carenero have access to recurring chess instruction. For committed competitive players, Bocas Chess also seeks financial support for travel, accommodation, tournament fees, and other expenses connected with national events. Several students have already achieved top-ten finishes in their categories at Panamanian competitions.🏆 Bocas Caribbean Open 2026
The Bocas Caribbean Open 2026 is scheduled for September 5–7, 2026 at Centro Católico Virgen del Carmen on Isla Colón. Club de Ajedrez Bocas Chess is the official organizer, while Joel Sanz serves as Tournament Director. The tournament will use a six-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The event will be submitted for FIDE Standard rating, giving local players an opportunity to compete for international rating while also attracting competitors from outside Bocas del Toro. FA Eloisa Montilla Brayan is Chief Arbiter, with NA Jeison Stefan Gonzalez serving as Deputy Chief Arbiter. The event therefore combines the club’s community-focused mission with formal international tournament standards.🏛️ Organization and Leadership
