About Club de Ajedrez Conil

Club de Ajedrez Conil is a chess club based in Conil de la Frontera, Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain. Founded in 2014, the club grew from a local group of chess enthusiasts into an active organization for children, adults, recreational players, and federated competitors. Its regular home is the Sala José Velarde at the Casa de la Cultura, where members meet for chess activities and official team matches.

The club maintains an unusually broad tournament program for a local organization. Its activities include FIDE-rated classical events, rapid tournaments, school competitions, simultaneous exhibitions, a club social league, and participation in provincial team chess. Moreover, Club de Ajedrez Conil works extensively with schools in the municipality and creates competitions for different ages and rating levels. In the 2026 provincial team championships, it entered five teams, including one in Primera Provincial and four in Segunda Provincial.

Francisco Ligero Marín is the current President and principal organizational contact of Club de Ajedrez Conil. He also serves regularly as Tournament Director and arbiter at the club’s competitions. The 2026 calendar is particularly active. The I Festival de Ajedrez El Colorado is taking place from August 28–30, 2026, while further events are scheduled through November, including the VII Open Internacional Sub 2200 FIDE Costa de la Luz and the XIII Abierto Internacional Villa de Conil – Memorial Pepe Ureba.

History and Development

The origins of Club de Ajedrez Conil date to local chess activity that intensified around 2012. Francisco Ligero Marín became involved after playing in a local tournament, and the idea of establishing a permanent chess organization gradually developed. The club formally began its activity in 2014. One of its first major initiatives was a Christmas introductory chess workshop for children. Several participants subsequently joined the club and became federated players. From there, the organization expanded its work into schools and institutes throughout Conil de la Frontera.

Competitive progress followed. The Conil Torre de Guzmán team became FADA U1600 champion in 2017, and the club won the Third Provincial division in 2019. Its strongest early team achievement came during the 2020–2021 season, when Conil won the provincial league and earned promotion to Primera Andaluza for the first time.

Team Chess and Club Competition

Club de Ajedrez Conil remains active in Cádiz provincial team chess. During the 2026 provincial championships, the club entered five separate teams. Club de Ajedrez Conil A competed in the southern group of Primera Provincial, recording four victories and three defeats and finishing fifth. Meanwhile, four additional squads competed in Segunda Provincial. Conil B produced the best result among them, finishing second during the regular phase before reaching the knockout stage.

The club also maintains its own Liga Social, which has been played since the 2016–2017 season. Members meet on Fridays at the Sala José Velarde and compete in a round-robin format before the leading players advance to semifinals and a final. Antonio Leal Rodríguez won the 2025–2026 edition, ahead of Peer Hofmann and Álvaro Leal Rodríguez.

Youth Chess and Community Development

Youth development has been part of the club’s identity since its earliest years. Club members have delivered chess activities in local schools and educational centers, while the club organizes competitions specifically designed to introduce younger players to structured tournament chess. The annual Torneo Inter-Escolar is one of the clearest examples. The eighth edition in 2025 attracted 92 players after preliminary competitions were organized in different educational centers across Conil. The final tournament divided participants into three school-age groups.

The series continues in 2026 with the IX Torneo de Ajedrez Inter-Escolar, scheduled for November 29. In addition, many of the club’s open events provide dedicated U8, U10, U12, and U18 prizes, giving developing players further incentives to participate alongside experienced competitors.

2026 Tournament Activity

Club de Ajedrez Conil has built an extensive 2026 calendar covering classical, rapid, and rating-restricted competitions. The year began with the I Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Club de Ajedrez Conil, held from February 27 to March 1. It combined a U2200 FIDE tournament, a U1800 FIDE tournament, and a U1600 FADA competition. The club later organized the III Torneo El Restobar, III Festival Hotel Oasis Atalaya, V Open Torre de Guzmán, V Torneo Mirador de la Atalaya, and the IV Open Internacional de Conil.

On August 22, 2026, the IV Open Internacional de Conil took place at Parque de la Atalaya. Players contested seven rapid rounds at 8 minutes + 3 seconds per move, with Francisco Ligero Marín serving as Chief Arbiter. The club is currently organizing the I Festival de Ajedrez El Colorado, which runs from August 28–30, 2026. The festival consists of separate U2200 FIDE and U1700 FIDE sections. Both tournaments use seven Swiss rounds at 80 minutes + 10 seconds per move and count for FIDE and FADA rating.

Costa de la Luz and Villa de Conil Events

The VII Open Internacional de Ajedrez Sub 2200 FIDE Costa de la Luz is scheduled for September 25–27, 2026 at the Pabellón Torre de Guzmán in Conil de la Frontera. The tournament will use seven Swiss rounds at 80+10 and will count for FIDE and FADA ratings. Further events follow during the autumn. The IV Torneo de Ajedrez A.V.V. Campo de Conil is scheduled for October 3, while the club’s traditional Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Villa de Conil – Memorial Pepe Ureba returns on November 28.

Together, these events demonstrate the club’s emphasis on providing regular competitive opportunities throughout the year rather than concentrating its activity around a single annual tournament.
