♟️ About the Organizer
Club de Ajedrez Conil operates in Conil de la Frontera, Cádiz, Spain. Local chess enthusiasts founded the club in 2014. Since then, it has developed a permanent chess community for children, adults, seniors, beginners, and experienced players.
The club uses Sala José Velarde at Casa de la Cultura as its main meeting place. Members gather there to play, train, and prepare for individual and team competitions. Francisco Ligero Marín leads the organization as club president. He also supports tournament management, direction, and arbitration.
In addition, the club runs a social league, coaching sessions, school activities, simultaneous exhibitions, and masterclasses. It also enters teams in provincial and regional competitions. As a result, its members gain regular competitive experience. The club won the Cádiz provincial league in the 2020/2021 season. That result earned promotion to the Primera Andaluza. Earlier, Conil Torre de Guzmán won the FADA Under-1600 title in 2017. The team also won the provincial third division in 2019.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
One of the club’s principal competitions is the Torneo Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Villa de Conil – Memorial Pepe Ureba. The club launched the event in 2014. Since then, it has welcomed grandmasters, international masters, junior players, and local club competitors.
The club also organizes the Open Internacional de Ajedrez Sub-2200 FIDE “Costa de la Luz.” This classical tournament gives developing players access to rated competition. Moreover, its rating limit helps create balanced pairings and useful competitive opportunities.
The wider program includes the Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Club de Ajedrez Conil and the Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Conil. It also features Hotel Oasis Atalaya events, El Colorado tournaments, school competitions, and outdoor rapid events.
These competitions cover classical, rapid, scholastic, and rating-restricted formats. The club manages regulations, registrations, pairings, officials, prizes, and communication with players. In addition, it works with the Conil de la Frontera Town Council, schools, sponsors, and chess authorities.
🌱 Youth Chess and Community Development
Youth chess has remained central to the club’s work since its foundation. In December 2014, the organization ran a free introductory workshop for local children. Around 40 children attended the activity. Several participants later joined the club and entered official competitions.
Since then, Club de Ajedrez Conil has expanded its work with local schools and secondary schools. Through these projects, students learn concentration, strategic thinking, sporting conduct, and tournament rules. The club also organizes school championships, junior sections, and training activities.
Moreover, young players can progress from introductory sessions to federated competition. Club teams give them experience in both individual and team formats. This pathway supports beginners while also challenging stronger junior players.
Members normally meet at Sala José Velarde on Friday evenings from September to June. These regular sessions combine training, casual play, and social competitions. Therefore, the club offers an accessible chess environment for players of different ages and strengths.
